Lost in last month's brouhaha regarding the involvement of Rush Limbaugh in a group hoping to buy the Rams is that the effort to sell the Rams received an enormous amount of free publicity.
And maybe, just maybe, the conundrum caused the matter to land on the radar screen of Texas billionaire Gerald J. Ford, who is no direct (if any) relation to the late President of the same first and last name.
Ford, a self-made banking tycoon, reportedly is interested in buying the Rams, according to Charley Casserly of CBS, who first broke news of Limbaugh's involvement in the process.
In September 2009, the 65-year-old Ford was ranked No. 289 on Forbes list of the wealthiest Americans. His $1.35 billion empire is down from $1.6 billion in 2006, when he was No. 215 on the list.
Ford knows a thing or two about supporting unsuccessful football programs. The stadium in which SMU plays bears Ford's name.
