Harbaugh apologizes to Jerry Jones

Last week, we passed along a quote from Ravens coach John Harbaugh from a recent book saying the Cowboys “stand for everything that’s wrong with the NFL.”

Some of you laughed, some cried, and the mass quantity of polite responses to the post was enough to push some old Rush Limbaugh stories down the PFT’s most commented rankings.

We suspect this inevitable Harbaugh apology post won’t create quite a reaction. The Ravens coach called Cowboys owner Jerry Jones Saturday to apologize for the remarks.  Jones said Tuesday on The Fan in Dallas that he accepted Harbaugh’s apology.

“I was able to be a little bit forgiving,” Jones said. “In 20 years I
know firsthand I’ve had my foot in my mouth plenty of times.”

We can only hope the the warring Eagles and Cowboys fans in the comments can be so forgiving.

UPDATE: Former PFT scribe Aaron Wilson notes that Harbaugh said he was “disappointed with myself.”

Look, you know, Jerry Jones has his faults, but you’ve seen how if you bark at him like a dog enough, he’s willing and able to change course (see the dropping of TO, Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson.
    That really does mean something.
His showmanship gets in the way of the team winning, and that’s an obnoxious fault apparent to even us fans, but seriously…you can do much, much worse. 70% of teams do.
Most people can’t even NAME the owners of most teams, so the idiotic things they do get ignored.

Jerry Jones along with Dan Snyder IS whats wrong with NFL ownership. They’re more concerned with their ego and facetime than building a real winner. I’ll wait while the homers complain and TRY to prove me wrong.

Maybe Harbaugh read my post about how Dallas only has 1 big name player they bought.. Roy Williams, most the rest were drafted and developed.

Did Harbaugh also mention to Jerry that his Cowboys will be one and out in the playoffs? Or 1-3 in December?

  12. VoxVeritas says: Nov 10, 2009 8:32 PM

There is a proper order in life and that order dictates that Eagirl fans are always losers in any endeavor they undertake. They’re not losers because the Cowboys beat them in every phase of the game in their own stadium on national TV on Sunday night, they’re losers because that’s all they ever care to be. Most of them are still MIA anyway, so I don’t see any big wars in the near future. For sale: 100 green rifles. Never fired and only dropped once each. Get it? haha
That said, Phil Sheridan had a pretty good article on Andy Reid’s problems with game management on Philly.com. He doesn’t agree with Reid’s strategy that he thought that the Eagirls would hold the Cowboys for four minutes. His point is a good one… that with no timeouts left, they didn’t have four minutes to play with. They had about 2.5 minutes, the time it took for the clock to get to the 2 minute warning. Because like Florio said, anybody that’s played Madden knows that inside two minutes, if the offense has the ball, the lead and a first down, game over unless Herm Edwards and Joe Pisarcik are involved. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that kicking the FG instead of going for the first down and an eventual TD to send the game into OT was the death rattle, but I do feel that the miracle needed for the Eagirls to win the game after the FG was necessarily bigger than the one needed for them to get the first and go on to score a tying TD and PAT. I mean come on, everybody knew the Cowboys were going to run and still the Barbarian was able to prove why they call him “the closer”, picking up 16 yards on 3 carries.
I’d kinda like to hear PFT’s take on the matter. I’d particularly like to hear Florio’s opinion on whether coaches who have proven several times that they can’t do something as simple as managing a game with any semblance of intelligence can really be considered “good” coaches.

I’m with Sheridan. Reid is and always has been a bad game and clock manager. That is a fixable skill that he hasn’t bothered to learn in all his years of coaching. That is hubris and that is why the Andy Reid coached Eagles will never win a Super Bowl.

How about if I just present you with the facts? Here are the results for Jerry Jones, the owner who you say isn’t interested in “building a real winner”.
In 20+ years as Cowboys’ owner, his organization has won 3 Super Bowls (in 3 attempts), 7 division titles, and made the playoffs 11 times. Their regular season record is 179-149, a 55% winning percentage. Their playoff record is 12-8, a 60% winning percentage.
You can count on one finger the current owners who have as many rings as Jerry’s 3: Bob Kraft. If Jerry’s not trying to build a “real winner”, he’s had a hell of a lot of incidental success, hasn’t he?
Yes, go ahead and throw out the “they haven’t won a playoff game in 15 years” bit. It’s true and legitimate criticism. But, it’s not as if the Cowboys have been a sad sack team lately. They’ve only had one losing record since 2002.

Obviously you know nothing of football. Jerry Jones is totally about winning. Had the salary cap not been implemented, the Cowboys would’ve had a minimum of 5 Super Bowls in the 90′s.
You wish you had an owner like Jerry Jones.

LOL look at Vox sticking out his chest. How cute. He’s even talking trash about some sort of percieved “domination” of the Eagles……..not even 1 year removed from watching his own squad humiliated on national television 44-6 and being knocked out of the playoffs in the process by the Eagles. Hey Vox, when your team wins a playoff game in this century then you can talk about the Eagles and other teams. Until then your talk is like flat skunky beer.
At least the Eagles have done something worth watching in the last 13 or so years……which is more than any Cowboys fan can say about their team.
Also funny that you would bring up “MIA”…….as you were MIA for a couple of weeks after the Cowboys (and Jerry Jones) were humiliated so thoroughly on that cold winter night in Philly. You were too terrified to sit at the table for your helping of deep fried crow.

“I’ll wait while the homers complain and TRY to prove me wrong.”
No problem. The ultimate marker of success in the NFL is SB wins. Not counting totals for franchises – just those under the current owners, what does the SB win total look like? Like him or hate him, he gets the players and coaches he wants. They’re still putting up wins. You can repeat the “hasn’t won a playoff game in…” all you want. Only Kraft can match him in SBs.
In last 20 years or so -
    Jones: 3 wins
    Kraft: 3 wins
Rooney’s boy, Mara’s boy, and the miscellaneous ownership the 49ers have gone through get most of the rest.
Most of the others are still hoping for their first while Jones and Kraft are hoping for their 4th. I know it hurts to admit that a guy you don’t like has won 3 SBs but you need to get that through your head. Everyone except the Patriots would have you killed to have those 3 wins.
    You have been proven wrong.

Yeah, Harbaugh and Jones looking at each other from different ends of their respective divisions, with the Cowboys in the best shape they’ve been in in years, is not the best time for Harbaugh’s comments to become news.
In some ways, Harbaugh has a point. Then again, Jerry doesn’t currently employ a murderer, or sadistic dog torturer, or girlfriend-beater, or steroids-abuser, or whatever else other teams’ players are doing these days.
As a Cowboys fan, Jones drives me up the wall a lot of the time. But I’ll take the showman cheese over the grimmer stuff that’s floating around the league these days.

The Ravens got the call because they were the only team that had never played in Texas Stadium. Besides, scheduling a patsy team for homecoming is something that the pathetic high school that pushed you through would do, and you seem to believe that that’s what they should have done. Just like when the disgraceful Eagirls stadium personnel tried to hometown the clock on the Cowboys, it’s bush league. Now, go back to kissing Art Modell’s ass… until he decides he wants to screw you over too just like he did to throngs of loyal Cleveland fans.

“I think Jerry knows, remember last December”
Or better yet, remember Sunday night when the Cowboys players outplayed the Eagirls in every phase of the game and Wade Phillips *severely* outcoached Andy Reid. It’s all the more sweet that the Eagirls had Brian Stewart on the sidelines. Sweeter still that their all-star defensive backfield couldn’t stop an undrafted guy from scoring the long winning TD, even with triple coverage. And don’t forget about Felix Jones punking Asante Samuel out like a little girl. That was pretty sweet, too.

  47. purpleguy says: Nov 11, 2009 11:16 AM

I didn’t think much of Jerry Jones, but I ran into him in the busy concourse of a Vikes’ preseason game and he actually stopped and talked to me for a minute. He was nice as hell. If a rich billionaire that probably meddles with his team too much stops and graciously talks to a loser nobody like me, I’m not going to rip him — even when Romo fumbles away a playoff game against the Vikings.

  48. ShootahCowboy says: Nov 11, 2009 11:29 AM

wrong. He didn’t win anymore superbowls because his big ego got in the way and he fired the mastermind behind all 3. Yes. We all know Jimmy wasn’t there fir the third one. But we also all know that the only reason they won is because of the team and system that Jimmy setup. That is very evident in the way the team has performed since that last superbowl.
Learn your NFL history. THEN speak
    _______________________________
In 1993 the Dallas Cowboys had 4 Defensive Tackles and 3 Defensive Ends that could start for just about any other team in the NFL. The simple fact of the matter is that the salary cap robs you of depth, which the Cowboys had in spades.
The other piece of the puzzle is that a player’s value, at the very least, doubles when he’s a member of a Super Bowl winning squad. Larry Brown, Super Bowl XXX MVP was a complete joke and every Cowboys fan knew it. Had he not been a Super Bowl MVP, he would’ve been cut. Instead, he signed a huge contract with the Raiders and ended up being benched halfway through the season.
As far as Jimmy & Jerry, they BOTH had inflated egos, period. Both sides were wrong in that one.
As you gave me “advice,” allow me to return it…
