The full extent of the league discipline for Sunday’s fight on the Atlanta Falcons’ sideline isn’t yet known. But two players on the Washington Redskins acknowledged today that they have been fined.
Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and safety LaRon Landry both said the league has informed them they were fined for their actions. Neither said how much they were fined, but Haynesworth, one of the highest-paid players in the league, is apparently unconcerned about the dollar amount.
“It’s all right. We make money here, so I can pay it,” Haynesworth said, per Jason Reid of the Washington Post.
Landry told the Washington Examiner he’ll let his agent handle the matter.
“I haven’t opened my envelope yet,” Landry said. “I might just wait. I might prolong it. What i’m going to do is open the envelope and send it straight to my agent and let him tell me what the damage is. We’ll go through the whole appeal process if I have to or not.”
Other fines, including one for cornerback DeAngelo Hall, are presumably coming, and Falcons coach Mike Smith could be fined as well.
Falcons fans have been collecting money to “pay Mike Smith’s fine,” or more realistically donated to charity.
(I doubt the Skins fans plan the same for Hall).

It’s a good thing that’s all you care about Haynewworth. Because winning does not seem to be high on the “to do” list for the Redskins!!
$1100 bucks and growing!
Thanks Sporkdevil for promoting a great cause!
Don’t for get to add your extra $.23 for DHall!
Let’s hear it for Smitty!!!!
Way to go Fat Albert………now EVERYONE knows you came to DC to get rich and die! Another in a long line of losers to follow this path………Deion Sanders, Big Daddy Wilkinson, Bruce Smith, etc. and soon to add Meangelo Hall to the list.
Not that very many people didn’t know this already!
Mike Smith acted with no class and very unprofessional, makes no difference if he felt like he was protecting his players or not,Matt Ryan and Landry were walking away talking when he went nuts!! he should be fined and suspended, the fact is he swung on another player, watch the video…my 8yr old nephews father is his head coach of there football team,he asked if other coaches would act that way…NO!
If Falcon fans pay his fine then they are as classless as there coach.
Spork you idiots can collect your own hard earned money and give it away all you want. If you watch the tape Landry actually makes contact before Ryan’s foot steps out of bounds. Not only do they flag him but he gets fined too? Haynesworth did nothing but push a person or two to try to break things up. Hall was personally attacked by the falcons bench when he didnt do anything but no one on the falcons got penalized.
I call what I see and my team sucks but both me and my father were sitting on the couch without a clue as to why the falcons never got a penalty after grabbing Hall on the sideline and shoving him around. Hall didn’t do anything and it was assistant coaches who initially grabbed him. The hit looked late but Landry actually made contact before he stepped out so technically he shouldn’t have been penalized or fined. I’m pretty sure if the Skins were better they would have been treated differently.
Landry bagged a multi-million dollar rookie contract (going the in the first round) and he’s acting like a few thousand dollar fine is going to hurt him. What a fukn tool.
Why doesn’t he put himself in the shoes of every day Americans with mortgages and kids and have gotten laid off from jobs paying a fraction he makes.
That’s what you get when you pay kids millions for entertainment. Their sense of reality is warped.
Let me get this straight, Falcons fans are donating money to pay a fine for an NFL Head Coach that makes a couple million a year? Why don’t you knucklehead Falcons fans take that money and donate it to a worthy charity in Mike Smith’s name instead. The guy doesn’t need it.
As for the Landry hit, well I to thought he was still in the playing field and the penalty was bullshit, but the NFL is basically “two hand touch” when it comes to touching QB’s so I’m not surprised.
Speaking of QB’s, whats up with Matt Ryan and his bright red face while he plays? Is it an excitement thing, or a lack of oxygen? Seemed odd that everytime he was shown under center his face was so red it matched the color of his jersey. Doesn’t look healthy.
Roger “God” Goddell is pulling his hair out at the thought of potentially slapping a coach with a fine or discipline. Players get swift and heavy handed discipline. Management types and Coaches not so much. Raiders HC a great example.
Mike Smith’s conduct is unbecoming of a Head Coach in the NFL or any where else for that matter in football circles. What the hell is “God” Goddell waitng on. Goddell is not showing any leadership on this issue and gives the impression of a double standard consistently.
“Falcons fans have been collecting money to ‘pay Mike Smith’s fine’”
First, you’d have to be an idiot to collect money for someone who makes more in a week than you probably do all year. Second, I believe there is (or used to be) a league rule that prevented owners, fans, etc from paying the fines of the players and coaches.
If the league really wanted to make an impact on cutting out the behavior that brings about a fine, they would make the minimum be the equivalent of a game check. That’s an attention getter.
db 3300: No one bothers to notice that pay fine is in quotes, which was never the lessfollowed immediately by raising money for charity?
I can’t improve your reading comprehension, but money is going to one of the Falcon youths organizations in support of Smith. Atlanta is behind their coach.
Dan Snyder: My lord Snyder, you have your own problems, but- again, like said, and also explained if you follow the link, the money goes to charity. It’s a sign that there are thousands of people behind our head coach who want to support him and the charity of his choice. You wouldn’t understand it with Zorn calling plays… I mean… whatever Zorn does.
Also, I am not personally the NFL, so I did not spend time reviewing the tape and decide on the fines. Maybe they saw something you didn’t, and maybe they are wrong. However, they did it anyways. Feel free to shoot them an email.
And man, I had no idea people hated charities so much.
READ the collection page. The money is actually going to a Charity of Mike Smith’s choice. It’s not about the money, it’s about a show of support for the team. Something the Redskins have no clue about.
Let’s try to mix in some facts with the opinions being expressed here.
First, in the interest of full disclosure, I’m a Falcons fan. I’m also a Mike Smith fan. I know him personally as a man of integrity and honor. He will stand up for his players and they’ll stand up for him, but I have no doubt that he regrets the intensity of his reaction Sunday.
I contributed $23.23 to his fund (you Skins fans will understand the significance of that number). I did it with the full understanding that Mike Smith cannot and would not accept the money. He would consider it improper and the league wouldn’t allow it anyway. The money will be donated to charity. All of us making contributions understand that.
There has been no formal announcement of fines by the NFL. We have only the word of Landry and Haynesworth, which I don’t doubt. My point is that Mike Smith, and Jeff Fish too, have probably already been notified but will allow the announcement to be made through proper channels.
The fines on Landry and Haynesworth were entirely justified, and I trust that D. Hall will be fined as well. I also believe that whatever fines are handed down on the Falcons side are also justified. There’s no cause for pride among any of the participants, but I view this as a ‘teachable moment’ for all involved. I’m confident that Coach Smith will learn from this. I doubt very much that Hall, Landry or Haynesworth will.
Damn I miss Sean Taylor. Ryan would never have made it to the sidelines.
Sean Taylor would have shot up coach Smiths house.
ham1: I totally agree. ST was a beast.
Mike Smith needs to be fined heavily and should be suspended. There is no place in the game for doing what he did on Sunday. If the roles were reversed and a player had done that to a coach he would be looking at a multi-game suspension. Then again, in the NFL there is always a double standard when it comes to players and coaches.
I would bet my last dollar had Deangelo Hall reacted to being grabbed and screamed at by throwing a punch at one of those boneheaded idiot coaches, that he would be fined for several games.
I liked Mike Smith a lot before he did what he did on Sunday. Hopefully he at least learns from this, because not all NFL players will be as cool-headed in that situation as Deangelo Hall. I think Matt Ryan showed a lot of class by not getting involved.
I also think Deangelo Hall did nothing wrong. He never put his hands on anyone, even with 2 idiot coaches grabbing him by the collar and screaming obscenities in his face…
Replying to Drastik29, you would do well to review the video of the incident (viewable on a number of Youtube clips). You will find no evidence that Mike Smith or any other Falcon threw a punch. You will see that Mike Smith was driven backward by a flying D. Hall elbow before Smith made any physical contact. You will also see that what you interpreted as a punch by Smith was actually his arm being knocked upward when Hall threw a second elbow.
Coach Smith over reacted and that warrants a fine. Hall is the only one involved who has earned a suspension.
