On Wednesday, ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd called me out for suggesting that Browns coach Eric Mangini is lying or stupid for suggesting that he doesn’t know that quarterback Brady Quinn will trigger nearly $11 million in future escalators by taking 70 percent of the snaps in 2009.
I’ve got a response to Cowherd, who was incredibly cocksure in his belief that I’ve lost my mind. (He may be right — my position for now is that my take on Mangini isn’t evidence of that possible reality.)
But instead of responding here, where I can do so without Cowherd having a chance to reply contemporaneously, I’m issuing him a friendly challenge.
Invite me on your show, Colin, and let’s talk this one out. I might not change your mind, but it would be slightly more compelling than one guy at a microphone doing a premeditated stream-of-consciousness routine in 10-minute chunks.
I’ll await your response. But I won’t hold my breath. Or any other bodily functions.

He got his panties in a bunch when Brad Childress called out ESPN and Ed Werder for making false statements about Favre’s deadline on the KFAN Power Trip show.Then Coward takes a shot at Mike Morris (former Vikings player and host of The Power Trip) and Corey Cove (sidekick on The Power Trip) calling them “Boondoggle and Chapstick”. I heard his show yesterday. I like Colin, but that is ridiculously shortshighted on his part. While Mangini may not know the specifics, the GM (which he effectively is now and was two weeks ago) should know the escalators in contracts. For a franchise that is paying out way too much money for past head coaches/GMs they are gonna look for ways to save money here and there. One of the biggest would be not to trip the escalators.
This crap happens all the time in baseball based on plate appearances, innings pitched, etc. You always here players complaining at the end of the year / media speculation about a non-winnning team holding out a player or two from meeting threshold to trigger an escalator / year end bonus.
Hope he agrees to the challenge, he would lose the argument, but he wouldn’t admit it because in his mind he is never wrong.

We got a new (second) sports radio station in the area I live last year. Colin Cowherd is the reason I don’t listen to it. I tried it, heard some tool pontificating as if he knew everything so why bother backing anything up with facts or quotes, then changed back to my old sports station.
Tried it again, same tool, found out it was Cowherd.

I think Cowherd makes some pretty ridiculous arguments, this one about Mangini not knowing the important and intricate contract details of Quinn in particular. But I listen to his show regularly; Colin Cowherd does NOT make statements without being able to back it up with logical reasoning for his argument, as he did in this instance. UFC and MMA is called barbaric by the PTI guys and glorified cock fighting by their radio personalities, but the second they sign an MMA league to their ESPN 2 schedules theyll be hyping it as the greatest thing ever. They virtually ignore Dana White even though hes as bright as Robert Kraft, Mark Cuban and Theo Epstein.
You need to face the facts, Florio, for as much as you hate ESPN they hate you just as much. For a Coach/de-facto GM not to know about a huge escalator clause would in fact suggest that Coach/GM is in fact very stupid. Then again, we are talking about Magini.
ESPN for the most part has good information, plus its like walmart with one stop shopping. But writer and personalities wise they are terrible they have only 3 good guys, clayton, simmons and stein. From what I hear bout Schefter then maybe 4. But by far, as radio Colin Cowherd is awful. Cowherd’s show is the best on sports radio. He’s provocative, compelling and very interesting. As Colin pointed out, there are questions about this move in Cleveland and he rightly talked about it.
It’s Cowherd’s job to stir the drink a little and he does a great job at it. Yeah, I like Florio’s stuff and it sounds like it should be a good discussion.
Just because you don’t ‘get’ Cowherd’s show or point of view doesn’t mean you have to trash him. Most people belittle, disrespect and tear down what they don’t understand anyway, so this is a prime example.

I heard that yesterday, and I did agree with his overall point, that it’s not the coach’s job to know everyone’s contract, and really I don’t want my coach wasting time on that either. However, my coach is sadly Mangina. But in this situation, how else would you explain benching Quinn for so long when Anderson is by far the worst starting QB in the league. That’s what I was waiting for him to explain yesterday… but nope.
Can some ESPN employee please have an affair with Cowherd and then spill the beats, this seams like the best way way to get the axe around there. Cowherd is the worst thing to ever hit the radio. I used to listen when I was about 18 and uneducated. Then I went to college, got a job and realized the error of my ways. Haven’t listened to that tool in 3 or 4 years. Colin has NO understanding of sports, he only chooses one side of an argument and defends it with his life. That’s not a show, that’s stupidity. If you want real sports talk and interviews, listen to Dan Patrick. He takes Colin to school everyday. It’s like watching Michael Jordan vs. a grade schooler.

Cowherd’s probably the funniest guy in sports radio. He was great and relatively unbiased but the extremenorthEastSoxandPatriotNetwork has done a number on him and he’s now a NE team lover. Did anyone hear him yesterday, touting the Sox and Patriots and all Mass/Conn teams betterment over any New York team (he mentioned Mets/Syracuse/Nets/St Johns)? He’s now a tainted also-ran sports radio guy.

Colin does this, to a degree, with sports. Yes, he admits that he’s a USC homer….what, should he bow before Florida just because they cakewalk to the SEC title game and BCS title game(never travel to ranked teams).
The SEC is, and to a large extent has been, one of the most competitive conferences in D-1. So why wouldn’t Cowherd talk about them? He bashes Notre Dame, and I agree! What has Notre Dame done in the last 10 years? Nothing! They were big 20 years ago and had their TV contract…ie, they were forced down our throats. Times have changed. We have more viewing options, and ND has fallen by the wayside.
Cowherd is a big fan of increased instant replay in MLB, I agree! This year’s playoffs were testament to that! Come on baseball, this is not the 1930′s….we have evolved!
You mention Colin talking about the Yankees…HELLO, that’s called the WORLD SERIES!! Last time I checked, that’s pretty big news in the sports world(and I’m a PHILLIES fan).

ESPN radio has been on a downhill slide for the past 5 years or so. I can’t even bear to listen to any program on it, since it’s all corporate all the time, interviewing ESPN’s own talent, only covering stories that the network deems acceptable, editing and censoring up the wazzu. Boy, that sounds interesting, NOT! Why do you think DP left?
Now, DP gets EVERY interview. ANY TIME there is a big story in the news, who is the first to get the interview? Not old uncle Colin, he only gets Buster Olney, Stink, Old Man Gammons, Beano Cook…should I go on? All of these people are BORING! DP gets every big interview, he puts ESPN to shame and they know it.

These people who are saying that Coward and Florio are one in the same really crack me up. One is a life-time sportsnut who was handpicked by ESPN and who has been handed most everything in his career by the powers that be, to a part-timer who has pretty much singlehandedly built the go-to site for the football fanatic. I’ve listened to Coward a bit, it’s the same bullcrap as everything else ESPN puts out. The same, since this is ESPN you have to like it, poppycock that has driven many people away from the so called WWL. I’d put my money on Florio, as long as Channing Crowder isn’t involved.
I’m a fan of the Cowherd show, only sports talk show I listen too actually, because I like that he takes the opposite side of so many arguments.
That being said, I totally disagreed with him on his take on this topic, but really didn’t like how he approached it even more. He went out of his way to not mention the site, saying ‘Mike Florio’ who runs a ‘football website’. Guessing a memo is out at ESPN to not mention this site.
And the argument about being an NBC property is b.s. Peter King is on weekly, and he routinely talks about competitors sites and personalities. His whole take on this topic seemed odd/disappointing to me…because I agreed with his stance on coaches in general not knowing every detail of a contract, he totally ignored your points in the story showing how he did…unless of course he read your first version of the story, not the later draft…in which case I totally get why it happened.
