Browns avoid blackout

The Cleveland Browns have announced that Monday night’s game against the Ravens has been sold out, and thus will be televised locally.

Area residents are trying to figure out whether that’s good news or bad news.

In a release, the Browns attributed the sellout to the combined efforts of the team, ESPN, Bud Light, and FOX affiliate WJW-TV.

In other words, those entities purchased the unsold tickets.

The unusual move here is that the sellout was announced without a 24-hour extension, and a full 24 hours before the Friday night deadline.  Teams typically embrace an extension in the hopes that folks who are on the fence will decide to go ahead and buy tickets that otherwise will be bought by sponsors, the team, and/or broadcast partners.

More proof that Cleveland is the mistake by the lake

  2. bearsrule says: Nov 12, 2009 6:32 PM

The team did the fans no favor.

Obviously they knew there was no point in expecting the good people of Cleveland to come out into the cold on a Monday night to watch a rout by the Baltimore Browns.
Just have the sponsors suck it up and buy the unsold tickets, and give them away to people who will boycott the boycott and be in their seats come kickoff.

There was no need for an extension because NO FANS were going to buy anymore tickets. The only hope to avoid a MOST embarrassing black out on monday night football was for sponsors to buy up the tickets. A quick search of stubhub reveals that tickets can be had for …$10. YEAH, ten bucks for a Monday night football game.
Lerner missed his chance over the bye week to fire mangina and promote Rob Ryan to interim head coach. But hey, that would have been a decisive maneuver and we all no that Lerner is capable of no such thing.

Hopefully this is just Lerner buying the unsold tickets. If he did, he should give them away to veterans in honor of their service and sacrifice. Nah, that would be the right decision. This team hasn’t made a good decision in years (pre-new Browns even).

Not really. A lot of teams do this

Damn. I was looking forward to watching the 1987 PBA semi finals that night. It would have been more exciting than the Browns’ offense.

they should call their blackouts brownouts.

  9. Yardline says: Nov 12, 2009 7:03 PM

Even when the Browns win, they lose….because at the end of the day, they’re still in Cleveland.

We’ve sold out every home game for this rudderless-suckfest of a replacement franchise ever since 1999. I guess we were bound to come to our senses sooner or later.
    Sell Lerner, sell!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Lebron to the Lakers or Knicks
    The Browns Go 1-15
    Pathetic.

Good news all around! The Bengals don’t have to worry about being bailed out this week either.
They play at the Pittsburgh where there is a ten year waiting list for season tickets and there hasn’t been a seat available since 1970.

  13. Youngstown Dan says: Nov 12, 2009 7:36 PM

Wouldn’t it be more proof if it didn’t sell out?

  14. sripan says: Nov 12, 2009 7:37 PM

I am going to go ahead and go to the game. Not to see sub-par football, but to watch some poor guy wearing a purple and black wind breaker get the crap beat out of him by a couple of frustrated Browns fans.

    *************
Why would the FOX affiliate assist with the buyout of a game that will be on ESPN?
And the Browns are an AFC team – CBS…..

way to send a message to Lerner , Brownie fans. You will continue to get the same garbage.

  19. danmateus75 says: Nov 12, 2009 9:20 PM

Why do they have to call it a “blackout”!?

Hey loudmouth. Before you try to pile on with the rest of the mob, maybe you should do a little research about the Lerner family and how much they contribute to the men and women of our armed forces. The Marine Corp flag flies over both the stadium and the practice facility in honor of Al Lerner. The team already has an Honor Row for every game, where veterans sit and watch the game with their families. In 2005 they donated over 500 Super Bowl tickets to the Marine Corp for soldiers on leave to watch the game in Detroit.
Besides their contributions to the military they have donated millions of dollars to the Cleveland Clinic for facilities and research.
You can find fault in anyone if you look hard enough. But when it comes to the Lerner family, don’t ever question their commitment to our community and our country. It will only leave you looking like a fool.

Maybe someone can “black out” Favre.
    Douche

  22. kosarsmyidol says: Nov 12, 2009 10:30 PM

Bud Light is sold for $7 a can at the stadium. Budweiser will more than make up for its contribution when the 6 fans in attendance drink enough to make the hurt go away.

  23. baycabbie says: Nov 12, 2009 10:56 PM

Is this the first time in the history of Monday Night Football that ABC or ESPN has had to bail out a team by buying tickets to avoid the blackout. Please let me know and you can email me at baycabbie@aol.com
    Thanks

The best thing about being a football fan in Cleveland is that you don’t have to pay full price for tickets this time of year. Everybody that has tickets is trying to unload them for whatever they can get. $10-$20 a ticket for lower bowl seats is what I’d expect to pay this week, though I’d still feel like I’m getting ripped off by paying that. The sponsors didn’t wait until Friday to buy them, because you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realize that nobody else is going to buy them at face value.
Just like nobody is buying Mangini at face value. What a coincidence.

  25. biglebronski10 says: Nov 13, 2009 12:32 AM

    zygi milf:
When the Browns are on national TV, the local FOX affiliate shows the game so the people who don’t have cable or satellite can watch the game.
I guess there aren’t any poor people in Minnesota… or at least none that anyone cares about.
