Closing the book on the Redskins-Falcons fracas

When FOX's Jay Glazer reported earlier today that Falcons coach Mike Smith has been fined $15,000 for getting in the face of former Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall on Sunday, many thought that this would be the last word on the situation.

But there's one more fine.  According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Falcons director of athletic performance Jeff Fish will pay $2,500 for his role in the rigamarole.

So that's 15 large for Smith, $5,000 for Redskins safety LaRon Landry, $7,500 for Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, and $2,500 for Fish.  Which equates to a grand total of . . . of . . . fingers, toes, zipper . . . $30,000.

Meanwhile, someone pointed out that Falcons fans are gathering money aimed at paying Smith's fine on his behalf.  The league, however, won't allow fines to be paid by anyone other than the person who is fined.

Moreover, folks should keep in mind the fact that Smith is a multi-millionaire.

And yet that POS Hall doesn't have to pay a cent. That is F'd.

  2. IN_Falcon says: November 12, 2009 1:56 PM

The Atlanta Falcons fans realize that he is a multi-millionaire; however, if the coach has the players backs, then we, the fans, will have Coach Smith's back.

We are gathering this money in honor of Coach Smith and the money will be donated to his favorite charity.

Don't you mean fingers, toes, zipper, zipper, zipper, zipper, zipper?

And I thought this was a "G" rated site.

  4. NFLJunkie says: November 12, 2009 1:58 PM

You gotta love a white haired, red faced, 50 year old coach who is so fired up that he is ready to throw blows with the opposing team. You gotta love that.

And Florio, does Smith have better hair than you?

  5. davidc45629 says: November 12, 2009 1:59 PM

And if Mike Smith opens his desk drawer in Flowery Branch tomorrow and sees 250 Benjamin Franklins how is the league going to know about it?

  6. smo05d says: November 12, 2009 2:04 PM

Not to mention, but he was out of line and deserved the fine.

  7. midnite says: November 12, 2009 2:06 PM

Big deal Florio, we are making the donation to Coach Smiths favorite charity. Your hate for the Falcons precedes you.

Moreover, folks should keep in mind the fact that Smith is a multi-millionaire.

Thank you for that tidbit, how much do you make ?

  8. tian says: November 12, 2009 2:17 PM

That fine will be paid. Don't worry about it. Mike Smith just went up huge in my book.

Getting into a player jaw-jacking on his team's sideline after a late hit on their franchise QB? That's what's up!

I just can't wait to see those Redskins again this year... oh, that's right! The Redskins will not be participating in the playoffs this year!

Oh, and I wonder how many teams will line up to sign Deangelo Hall next year?

  9. chapnasty says: November 12, 2009 2:18 PM

Everyone send their contributions to Mike Smith directly and in the memo line write, "Thank you"

  10. Mad Squabbles says: November 12, 2009 2:29 PM

As a Titans fan, I commend the Falcons fans on their support of Smith. Their coach must make them feel like winners.

  11. PUR-D33 says: November 12, 2009 2:30 PM

I'm a lifelong Redskins fan and I wish Smith would have knocked both Landry and Hall out cold. They are punks and thugs and worthless sacks of tattooed skin.

  12. famucancer says: November 12, 2009 2:34 PM

And now the dumb azz buzzard fans are gonna pretend like they're "raising money" for charity when ummmmm

    http://life.atlantafalcons.com/topic/3873567-updated-the-official-ill-help-pay-coach-smiths-fine-thread/

ROFLMAO! Yeah, add the other "charity/ebay auction" threads AFTER that one to cover the stupidity of it all..wait...its still pretty darn stupid. LMAO

  13. LovinBlue says: November 12, 2009 2:35 PM

Ridiculous. Haynesworth gets fined $7500 for hitting someone, and Jacob Lacey gets fined 33% MORE for harmlessly sliding into the end zone.

  14. sofakingdope says: November 12, 2009 2:37 PM

I'd love to see another coach in the league with the stones to do something like Smith did.

But I like that he has his players back.

Fining him doesn't make sense though.

  15. TheMako says: November 12, 2009 2:38 PM

Igotz5onit, Hall didn't do anything but come over to the sideline to help his player out. That garbage coach Smith should be suspended for a game and so should the guy that grabbed Hall. You thug Falcon puke.

  16. Tom Landry says: November 12, 2009 2:43 PM

looked like a clean hit from where i was sitting. QB doesn't want to get hit? Get off the field. That is all.

  17. Igottz5onit says: November 12, 2009 2:50 PM

    @ The Mako
Actually I am not a Falcon, nor am I a Falcon's fan. And I actually saw that play, unlike you it seems. Landry and Ryan were walking back from the sidelines when Deangelo "How many teams can I sucker into signing my worthless loudmouthed ass" Hall started running off at the mouth and flinging his arms around at the bald guy I assume is Jeff Fish. Then Mike Smith stepped in and basically told POS Hall to get off his sideline. You don't have to apologize as long as you know you are wrong.

  18. tian says: November 12, 2009 3:09 PM

Landry was way away from the Falcons sideline when Deangelo Hall came over to save him. He came over to voice his displeasure that they released him from the team, I guess. He had no other reason for being there. Landry was gone.

The only reason why Hall wasn't fined was because he was all talk. He didn't put his hands on anyone. He was all talk.

    All talk.

  19. rockotica says: November 12, 2009 3:12 PM

in that last sentence, replace folks with "sheep" and/or "ppl who vote republican who live in rural areas".

  20. Paulitik says: November 12, 2009 3:22 PM

Florio, you do understand that even if we did want to pay the actual fine, the league wouldn't let us, right? This is a symbolic gesture t show our support for our beloved coach. Atlanta Falcons fans have been through their share of crappy uncommitted coaches. To see what Smitty did for our team on the sideline was nothing more inspiring to the team and it's fanbase. DHall has been nothing but a cancer since he was drafted and to give him any benefit of the doubt that he was on our sideline for anything benign is absurd. This is football, not golf or tennis, it's a violent sport. No one was actually hit or hurt and the fact that anyone was fined is more proof of what a bunch of pansies the front office has become.

  21. NFLJunkie says: November 12, 2009 3:47 PM

Who has better hair, Smith or Florio?

  22. famucancer says: November 12, 2009 3:53 PM

Who knew Mike Smith listened to Trick Daddy?? LOL...cause I'm a thug!

  23. SmackMyVickUp says: November 12, 2009 4:04 PM

Hall is nothing but all talk, always has been.

Heard Smith say at the end have fun watching us in the playoffs loser.
    Redskins-Steelers in February

  24. moppohphor says: November 12, 2009 4:17 PM

Smith is a chump. DHall should've body slammed him. Smith shouldn't be able to coach this weekend. If Hall had been the one to put his hands on that old man, he'd be suspended for the rest of the year.... i love the falcons fans' trash talk.... when was the last time ya'll did anything?

In their 43 years of existence, the Falcons have compiled a record of 275–399–6 with division championships in 1980, 1998 and 2004. They have one Super Bowl appearance, Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999.

    WIN SOMETHING.

  25. moppohphor says: November 12, 2009 4:21 PM

post my comments about the sorry falcons PFT...

  26. Pablo says: November 12, 2009 4:31 PM

Falcon's fans are forgetting a few things.
    1) Your hero coach is only embracing this now. Initially he was only trying to calm the situation.
    2) Your hero coach didn't know it was Hall, right?
    3) Your hero coach was surrounded by 30 other Falcons players. Does it takes balls to stand up to someone with that kind of reinforcement? Who had who's back?
    4) Your hero coach, who now after being called a hero by Falcon's fan proclaims he was protecting his QB was in the face of the wrong player! Landry hit the QB, not Hall. Getting in the fall of Hall was simply a classless move.

He knew it was Hall (he lied), he knew his QB was hit by Landry (unless he wasn't watching the game), and Hall wasn't involved in any physical threats on the Falcon's sideline....who the hell was he protecting??? Next thing you know he will beat his wife and Falcon's fans will pay his bail proclaiming "Any man who beats his wife has balls" "He was protecting his players" all the while he will proclaim "He didn't know who it was in his bed"

  27. JOEinPHX says: November 12, 2009 4:46 PM

Replying to Tom Landry, you need to get a better seat, or at least review the video of the hit. Seen in stop motion, Landry is still two full yards from Ryan when Ryan stepped out. Some observers would argue that Landry's momentum made the hit inevitable. More knowledgeable observers would point out that Landry understands speed and angles and went for the cheap shot anyway. Those same observers would also point out his history of QB cheap shots, and the fact that since he got dismembered by Brandon Jacobs, he no longer makes man-up hits on anybody. Most players in the league would have veered off. Landry proved himself to be, in the words of PUR-D33, a 'worthless sack of tattooed skin'.

ARE THE SKINS STILL GOING TO WIN THE NFC EAST????

Did you have them going to the Super Bowl this year???

    SWEEEEEEET Picks!

  29. Igottz5onit says: November 12, 2009 4:55 PM

As a fan of neither team that was one of the dumbest posts I have ever read Pablo. Not only do you make stupid assumptions, you make stupid comparisons as well. Do you know what Hall was saying to the Falcons players or even why he was over there? Didn't think so. Also, comparing a coach trying to get an instigating loudmouth player off his sidelines to praise of domestic abuse is an Olympic record broad jump.

  30. JDeezy says: November 12, 2009 5:09 PM

Coach Smith gets me fired up. Keep winning, baby!

  31. DanSnyder says: November 12, 2009 5:25 PM

I lost all respect for Mike Smith. The way falcons fans have gotten so giddy over this is hilarious. I saw nothing from them indicating a playoff team. They gave up two 80+ drives ending with touchdowns to the redskins in one quarter.

  32. JKAFLAGG says: November 12, 2009 8:38 PM

    So, to recap:

    - after the player he came over to 'protect' is already off the Falcons sideline, DeAngelo Hall is pushed away by two guys in golf shirts.....
    - after the game, coach Smith downplays the incident, prefers to talk about the TEAM.....
    - DeAngelo Hall whines about the guys in the golf s shirts handling him in a 'harmful' manner and threatens to call his buddies in the NFL office.....
    - Coach Smith refuses to dwell on incident, insisting on using his time to prepare the TEAM for the Carolina game....
    - DeAngelo Hall complains on a radio show that his teamates did not come to his aid (against the guys in the golf shirts, presumably).....
    - NFL fines coach Smith and coach Fish. They continue to prepare the TEAM for the Carolina game, refusing to be dragged into the media circus.....
    - Falcons fans immediately begin to collect money to pay the coaches fines (and yes, we understand that the league will not accept the money; it will go to charity).....

Falcons 5-3 and fighting for a playoff sort.....
    Redskins 2-6 and....well, I don't want to pile on....

Yes..... now it makes perfect sense.....

  33. Pablo says: November 12, 2009 9:34 PM

There are really no assumptions in my post. They are all based on quotes by Smith. He initially claimed to be diffusing the situation. Then Falcon fans praised him for sticking up for his team and he changed his motto...

  34. TheMako says: November 13, 2009 10:07 AM

    Igottz5onit

You obviously have never played a team sport or you would understand that when a team mate of yours is underneath 30 other players and some violent s*** talking coaches who like to grab opposing players, you go over there and try to get them out of enemy territory. Please, do everyone a favor and stop watching football, you are doing a disservice to the sport. Get 5 on something else dumb dumb.
