Packers offense has "come to Jesus" meeting

The Green Bay Packers offense is starting to feel the heat of the team’s disappointing 4-4 start.

Expected to carry the team, the unit has been inconsistent.  In an offensive meeting Monday reported by Greg A. Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the group cleared the air about its shortcomings and what’s at stake for them over the next eight games.

“If we don’t win — and I mean now — they are going to fire all of our [butts] at the end of the season,” Donald Driver said during the meeting. “I’m serious.”

Driver was one of the team leaders who got up after Monday’s film session and addressed the group as a whole.  Players spoke bluntly about what their teammates needed to improve on.

One defensive player said he heard, “They really had it out.  Good. I don’t think anything but positive things can come from that.”

Driver, Aaron Rodgers, and tackle Mark Tauscher reportedly had the strongest words.  Rodgers was told he sometimes hold on to the ball too long.  The offensive line was told they need to pick up their play dramatically.

Rodgers said: “We all have to ask ourselves if we’re doing enough because if we’re not, we’re going to be sitting at home in January
watching the playoffs, not playing in them. Again. I don’t want to do
that again.”

Guard Daryn Colledge called it a “come-to-Jesus” meeting and the general feeling from Bedard’s article was that the meeting was positive.  Words can only mean so much, of course, and it raises the question why such a meeting like that was even necessary.  Rodgers says the team has a new sense of urgency.

“Unfortunately, I feel like we do now.  But it’s tough
because you don’t ever want to lose to get that sense of urgency, but
that’s sometimes how it works,” Rodgers said.

It’s hard to imagine a Week Ten game feeling more urgent than this one for the Packers.  Get a victory and the Packers will move to 5-4 with two very winnable games coming up against San Francisco and Detroit.  Lose, and the Packers will must face the reality that they haven’t had a victory over a playoff-caliber team in more than a year.

No amount of meetings can change that.

I guess this will mean they will beat the Cowboys now? Just because suddenly they want to win? The real question should be is why didn’t they want to win against Brett Favre at home? You can yell all you want, that doesn’t win football games.

This is coming from a Steeler fan, so I’m probably not quite up to par on all the happenings in the NFC North, but with that o-line I’m not too sure Favre would be playing much better than Rodgers (Not that Rodgers isn’t playing well, IMO he is). I’ve only watched the Pack play once or twice this year, but what happened to the running game? Is the line horrible at that too? That’s a serious question, I’m not trying to be sarcastic.
I actually thought the Packers would be much improved this year, and even with Brett in Minnesota it was going to be a battle for the division. I mean there IS time to turn it around, so there could be a battle at the end, but it’s not looking that way as of now.
It’s kind of a bummer, the Packers are my 2nd favorite team behind the Steelers. They became my 2nd favorite b/c of Favre, but I’m still a fan w/o him there.
I’m going out on a limb here, but it seems as if letting Darren Sharper go years ago is having just as much, if not more, of an impact now than not having Brett. It would be amazing to have one of the best safeties back there with two of the best CB’s.

utter nonsense from a team in turmoil.
This just proves there is no leadership from the coaching staff.
MM is trying to fix correctable mistakes from week 1 and it’s week 9!!!
No discipline whatsoever on this team.
    Way to many presnap penalties.
What of next year? 2 aging cb’s, Kampman and Driver are FA’s…….Will they get paid?
    I bet Driver doesn’t.
TT will cry poverty again, maybe you lose kampman?
Will Mm fire all of his offensive coaches?
Glad I’m not a Packer fan, sounds like a few years more of what you’ve been getting recently.

  20. JaredAllen69 says: Nov 12, 2009 3:10 PM

The Packers have a sense of urgency to beat the Cowboys? Big deal. They had a sense of urgency to beat the Vikings at Lambeau, and a sense of urgency to beat Tampa. How did that work out?
They are disappointed with their 4-4 start? Really? They were 6-10 last year, and did little to nothing to improve during the offseason. They should be glad that they are on a pace to finish 8-8. That’s a 2 game improvement from last year. Time to give Thompson and McCarthy contract extensions. Look at how the team is improving.

It gets really old hearing people say things about the Packers offensive line and if Rodgers had a good line…….Well, Favre has the same offensive line when the packers went 13-3 in 2007………..SAME GUYS…. spitz, tauscher, colledge, clifton, etc……………Favre gets rid of the ball………..Rodgers is too scared to throw int’s………Well if Favre wouldn’t have taken many of the chances he did in his career, a lot of those great plays wouldn’t of happened….. Time for Rodgers to man up………..Favre, Manning, and Brady still wouldn’t be getting sacked like Rodgers with that line……….. Those guys can make poor lines look better…..Favre did it in 2007………………Rodgers don’t………..Regardless, Favre WINS, Rodgers DON’T…….STATS MEAN NOTHING, just WIN BABY…..

This would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad. I used to love the competition between the Vikes and Pack. Now it’s just… YAWN Next! That sucks. The only thing that sucks worse….. the packers.

  29. DocBG says: Nov 12, 2009 3:41 PM

If ANYONE on that pathetic packer team thinks they’ve got a shot at the division, they need to think again. I’ve given the packer fans crap about what a terrible team they have, but they are actually far worse than most viking fans thought they would be. Rodgers can put up good numbers, but thats about it. You defense has nothing, the 3-4 was nothing but fluff to get you all excited, plus it will provide a good excuse, your offensive line and running game is a joke, and your recievers clearly cannot get open, otherwise karen wouldn’t have to hang to the ball forever before tossing it out. The best shot they have is getting on in the wildcard, but that means beating out the following for 2 spots: giants, eagles, falcons, bears, 49ers, panthers, and the seahawks. Its not impossible to see a situation where they slip in, but its probably not going to happen. the niners, panthers and bears all have the talent to flip it on, and the giants, eagles, and falcons are all clearly superior teams to the packers (well, so are the bucs, but they dont have a shot)
10-6 would give them a shot, but that means only 2 losses against the cowboys, bears in chicago, ravens, steelers, cardinals, and 49ers, probably not going to happen. hell, they could lose all of those and the lions and seahawks to finish 4-12, i wouldn’t be suprised after the egg against the bucs.

  30. sand0 says: Nov 12, 2009 3:47 PM

I don’t think the Packers woes are for lack of determination or sense of urgency. Even I, a Vikings fan, would not go so far as to say that their players are not trying as hard as they can. Why wouldn’t they? Although I will point out that their players were all smiles laughing it up with Tampa players after last weeks game, which is kinda lame on their part.
It just comes down to talent. Their team has more weaknesses than most playoff caliber teams. They do have some strengths, unlike your bottom barrel squads, but in the NFL you really need some balance or opponents will just attack you where you are weak.
Basically the Packers are weak at the point of attack on both sides of the ball. For all the credit given to QB’s and skill players, football at college and professional level has always and will always be won at the point of attack, in the trenches.
    ———————
Here is a ranking of the 5 teams with the most salary cap space in the NFL. I don’t know enough to know if every year teams that spend less do worse but it definately looks to be the case this season.
    1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers $22300000
    2 Cleveland Browns $17840000
    3 Green Bay Packers $16080000
    4 Jacksonville Jaguars $14990000
    5 Kansas City Chiefs $10910000

Don’t pull that childish crap just b/c you hate the Steelers and their fans. Go hang on your loser team. I’m a fan of the sport in general as well as the Steelers. Am I not allowed to watch other games? Is it wrong to be a fan of other players than the Steelers? Should I not find a game not involving the Steelers entertaining? I’ve played football practically my entire life. Love to play it, love to watch it. On Sundays the Steelers come first, but after their game is finished doesn’t mean I stop watching football….like you obviously do. How does that give you any merit? Or is it “the in thing” now to be a total and worthless homer? I’m not seeing the logic in seeing how liking the Packers makes me less of a Steeler fan?
I take it you must watch whatever horrible team it is you like then no more football for you until next week? Or do you sit there like a loser hating everyone on every other team b/c they are not yours. That’s not being a “true fan”. That’s being a loser :)

Driver and Tauscher generally have led in the past by example only. Glad they’re speaking up. Colledge on the other hand has always talked a great game but disappears when it’s time to play. I hope someone mentioned to Greg Jennings that when you get a big contract it doesn’t mean that it’s time to stop working hard and trying to improve. Sort of amazing to me how so mant fans always gave Favre a pass on his killer interceptions by saying “Well, he’s just trying to make a play.” But Rodgers isn’t holding onto the ball hoping that someone will come open for a play, no he’s just indecisive.
Last and least, thanks to all the suddenly vocal Swiss Miss supporters for reminding everyone why you are the least respected and most annoying “fans” in the NFL. You’ve had half a good season and all of a sudden you’re the Steelers or Patriots. Your team beat the Packers once last year for the first time in what – three or four years? Now you got a season sweep and it’s just so… common, isn’t it? Just enjoy your regular season success and let Packer fans worry about the Packers. Regular season success your team can sometimes have. Post-season success? Let me think about that-No.

Come to Jesus?? Are you Kidding me? From the people who call Favre Judas? You guys love to get your Bible on huh?
So the city of Gomorrah(Green Bay),living in sin under Thompson and McCarthy, was doomed. Picking shitty draft picks, ignoring the holy call of free agency (Moss) and snubbing Lot(Favre) with Rodgers. The good Lord(Ziggy) sent 2 angels( Childress and Bevell) to Gomorrah (Green Bay) to dine with Lot(Favre) The evil people of Gomorrah(Green Bay) guided by the likes of Chmura called for nasty things with the angels(Chilly and Bevell)to happen. Lot(Favre) was threatened also so the angels(Chilly an Bevell) told them to flee across the river to MN and what ever you do, don’t look back. As Lot(Favre) ran with Deanna, she happened to look back. But in this story ,Ted Thompson becomes the pillar of salt. Gomorrah(Green Bay) was burned to ground and never the same. Thus leading to ” a come to Jesus” meeting that will result in nothing!

If Jesus were truly a Viking fan, you would think he would allow that field goal in the loss to the Falcons to go thru, or change one of the outcomes of the four Superbowls that they lost. Let’s face it, there wasn’t much that Jesus could do in their last NFC championship game (41-0)
Personally, I don’t think Jesus is even a football fan but if he could turn water into wine and make the blind see again, maybe he could get Chilly an IQ higher than a 3rd grader and if the Biqueen fans pray really hard and promise to give up their homosexual lifestyle, maybe he even deliver a playoff win. A Superbowl is beyond even his powers.

Didn’t this same basic team go to the NFC championship game, lose in OT off a field goal?
Then what, 6-10? They are staring at a below .500 season again.
They made a BIG mistake, when Brett said “ya know what, I’m not quite done” they should have said, “GLAD TO HAVE YA BACK!”. Win NOW, don’t “build for the future”. You don’t build for the future if you have ALL the pieces to WIN NOW! Ted Thompson signs Randy Moss and they have 1, maybe 2 titles already. “TT” is an IDIOT! Instead he decides to save the $$ as if it’s his to keep, rather than bolstering his Super Bowl caliber team.
Rodgers is a good guy, good QB, and has a future. However, he isn’t BRETT FAVRE! There’s a reason Minnesota went from in the Playoffs by default to Home Field advantage in the Playoffs! Come on people. the NYJ were a game away from the Playoffs and possibly a division title! Brett WINS! That’s just what he does. Brad Childress looks like the smartest coach in the NFL over the last 20 years now. Instead of a guy who’s about to be fired.

    ________________
Fans gave Favre a pass on his interceptions because he won a lot more games than he lost. Rodgers took over a 13-3 team, and in a season and a half has gone 10-14, with a roster very similar to the 2007 roster. Losing, especially when expectations are high, causes fans to focus their attention on the flaws of their team. And a player on pace to be sacked a record amount of times is definitely considered a flaw.

You don’t get it! That’s what makes the Vikings offense so difficult. Pick your poison. Stop AP, and Brett Favre was offensive play of the week both times the Vikings dominated the Packers.
Had McCarthy and Capers decided to go all out to stop Favre, Peterson would have gone for 200 yards each game.

Bay to avoid the “PACKER SWEEP” by MN on Oct. 5 & Nov. 1!
Here’s the irony: for FOUR YEARS we’ve averaged $18-$20. million UNDER the salary cap for NO APPARENT REASON! Now, if the Packers win 8 or less (that’s the cutoff IMO) TT & MM will be fired and the Packers will EAT $18. million ($12. for MM and $6. for TT) Now THAT should make even the TT lovers think!

The Pack fans live in the past, Super Bowl wins etc. (even though half of the Packer trolls on here weren’t alive for two of them,) and in the future, the Pack still has a chance, (dream on) the Vikings won’t go all the way, (no basis in fact.) The way the Packers are playing, any team in the league can beat them, think of the Bucs, that was supposed to be a cinch win. Pray on Jimmie Smith, pray on, let’s face it, the Packers season is gonzo at least a Super Bowl win is possible for the Vikes, the Packers right now would take any win.

The offense had a coming out meeting…….what the defense doesn’t share in the 4-4 record? They can’t stop anyone.

With all the talk of firings, perhaps the coaches will have a sense of urgency as well. Other than the Favre/Rodgers swith at QB, the biggest difference since the 13-3 team in 2007 is the approach the offense takes.
McCarthy has fallen in love with the Home Run ball. Other than the Favre Miracle on Monday night in OT against the Bronco, the 2007 offense was based on qucik slants and run after the catch. The 2007 offense took what was there, gained a rythm and methodically drove the ball down the field. Rodger’s throws a great long ball and the team’s success in the 1st half’s of the pre-season games seemed to influence the philosophy used during the regular season.
Rodger’s deep strike ability makes for great highlights, but it has its shortcomings. First, Rodgers holds the ball longer which further increases the chance the weak o-line will give up a sack or get called for a holding penalty thereby killing the drive. He now seems to always look deep rather than taking what is there immediately. Second, the offense does not seem to get any type of a rhythm. More often than not, the Packers have been unable to sustain the drive and put the ball in the end zone if the bomb didn’t result in a TD. Last, the long ball approach doesn’t wear the other team’s defense down thereby giving you the ability to grind down the clock in the 4th quarter. On the other hand the Packer defense doesn’t get the breather that come with long sustained drives mixing run and pass.
The key to good management is to maximize the output of the resources available. MM and TT are not doing that.
MM is taking a lot of heat this week. When is Ted going to be a man and defend the coach he picked. Green Bay even with Driver, Woodson & Harris, is the youngest team in the league. That is Thompson’s fault — he has been here for 5 years. People forget that TT inherited a team as GM that went 10-6. Mike Sherman never had a losing record as GM. Before the 2005 season, TT let 4 Pro Bowlers go elsewhere: Guards Marco Rivera (dallas) and Mike Wahle (Carolina), Darren Sharper (Vikings) and Ryan Longwell (Vikings), and two pro-bowlers were lost in the 1st hald of the season Jevon Walker (1st Game) and Ahman Green (5th). That team went 4-12 (Packers 1st losing season since 1991) with Mike Sherman and Favre taking most of the blame. TT fired Sherman. TT better get his coach on the right path as TT’s build for the future attitude is getting old — the future for MM and TT is now.

    Spartachris….
I agree he is having an abnormally special year, but I have to strongly disagree with you when you say he was terrible with both GB and Minnesota. I know he had a couple good years with MN and at least a few in GB. I was shocked the Vikings traded him to be honest. But like I said, I’m a Steeler fan first, so don’t see many GB games. All I know is what I’m able to remember throughout the years. I never thought he was bad at all. Up there in age?? Yes. Bad? No.
I guess it was kind of foolish to assume Sharper would have a larger impact that Favre lol, and Favre would be getting the ball out quicker. But it doesn’t matter if he’s tough as all hell or not, he’d still be taking quite a few licks per game and Aaron does have the advantage of having a younger body w/ considerably less damage.

“SAME GUYS…. spitz, tauscher, colledge, clifton, etc……………”
First off you brainless moron, Rodgers had to put up with Allen Barbre for most of the season before Tauscher came back last week. And secondly, Jason Spitz is out for the year. Get your facts straight for the next time you post.

    “No class what so ever.”
Who are you to speak about class?
“Colledge on the other hand has always talked a great game but disappears when it’s time to play.”
I agree. Colledge says “we have to protect A-Rod” but yet he doesn’t show that on the field.
“Now THAT should make even the TT lovers think!”
Just because Packer fans still cheer on the Packers and not your man-crush doesn’t make them TT lovers. It’s a little somethig called loyalty, which you clearly lack. And one more thing….quit saying the same crap in every post you put on this site. It’s annoying as hell.

  62. Jimbo925 says: Nov 12, 2009 7:48 PM

It is likely to be clear within weeks, maybe even within this week vs. Dallas, whether or not McCarthy can get the team back and playing with more focus. Thompson only costs $2 million per year. If McCarthy shows the leadership to finish the season well, a new GM could be brought in and told to give MM on more year and then either keep him or hire who you want. MM’s year-to-date is not acceptable, but he also may have some beef with TT to say, “Don’t give me the youngest team in the NFL for a 5th year in a row.”
Sando at 3:47 PM. At the risk of complimenting a Viking fan, your post was one of the best and most accurate summaries I’ve ever seen on PFT.
On a scale of 1-10, the Vikings D-Line is a 9, and the Vikings O-Line is a 7. The Packers D-Line is a 6 and the Packers O-Line is a 3 (5 for run, 1 for pass). And the Vikings special teams with Harvin are clearly better. QB position is a wash, with the current nod to the guy with 18 years of experience vs. the 2nd year starter.

  63. packers4life says: Nov 12, 2009 7:53 PM

“Fans gave Favre a pass on his interceptions because he won a lot more games than he lost. Rodgers took over a 13-3 team, and in a season and a half has gone 10-14, with a roster very similar to the 2007 roster. Losing, especially when expectations are high, causes fans to focus their attention on the flaws of their team. And a player on pace to be sacked a record amount of times is definitely considered a flaw.”
It’s the team that is 10-14, not the QB. You win as a team and you lose as a team. Simple as that.
and Viking fans tell Packer fans to stop living in the past but yet Viking fans still bring up the 2007 roster and compare it to now.
“First, Rodgers holds the ball longer which further increases the chance the weak o-line will give up a sack or get called for a holding penalty thereby killing the drive.”
Rodgers is holding onto the ball for that long because he is waiting for his receivers to get open. The offensive line has to be capable of blocking for that long. Oh yeah and not to mention, in an article I read, the thumb of the Packers’ West Coast offense is to get rid of the ball in no more then 4 seconds, which he has done 26 of the 37 times he has been sacked. While I do admit some of them are Rodgers’ fault, I feel like Rodgers is getting unfair criticism for alot of the sacks this year because it is the offensive line’s job to block for the QB no matter how long he takes to get rid of the ball. After all, that is the whole point of having an offensive line…to block the QB.

I’m going out on a limb here, but it seems as if letting Darren Sharper go years ago is having just as much, if not more, of an impact now than not having Brett. It would be amazing to have one of the best safeties back there with two of the best CB’s.
    ======================================
Sharper’s career this season is an anomaly. He was terrible when both GB and Minnesota had him.

What I meant to say was out of all the 37 sacks this season, 28 of them happened under 4 seconds. In other words, 28 of the sacks given up happened before Rodgers could even set his feet.

Lol to the Packers fans complaining about “viqueers” coming in and posting smack.
Any Vikings related article and you guys are in there posting as much if not more, despite the fact that our team is 7-1 coming off a clobbering of your squad and your team is 4-4 coming off a loss to arguably the worst team in football.
We have a bit more to be talking smack about right now. You guys flipped your little lids for months leading up to this. We won, you lost. To the victor goes the spoils.
Yet despite all that I would bet you that you guys still talk just as much smack as we do, but not quite as much as you did before I’ll grant.
In any case, it is our year as far as the North is concerned. We have a top 4 NFC team with a chance to win the super bowl. Is it likely? No. There will be 12 playoff teams all with a chance to win every Sunday. I’d give us a 10% shot at winning it right now. That could go up or down depending on how we look down the stretch. But hey, it’ll be a fun ride to the bitter end either way.
Which is more than our NFC north brethren can say at this point.

You’re right, it’s the entire team that loses the game. But the entire team is influenced a significant amount more by the QB than any other position. And the main difference between 07 and 08 is the QB on Green Bay’s roster.
Now, addressing the later idiocy of your post…
“the thumb of the Packers’ West Coast offense is to get rid of the ball in no more then 4 seconds, which he has done 26 of the 37 times he has been sacked.”
How did he manage to get rid of the ball in under 4 seconds, yet still take a sack on the same play, 26 times? I always thought the QB had to possess the ball in order to be sacked.
Rodgers may be holding the ball trying to wait for receivers to get open, but he needs to be able to sense the pressure. It’s called pocket presence, and Rodgers has none. If no one is open, and the pocket is collapsing, throw it away. Sacks are drive killers, throwing the ball out of bounds doesn’t hurt anything other than Rodgers’ precious stats, which seem to be the only thing Packers fans have left to cling to.

“How did he manage to get rid of the ball in under 4 seconds, yet still take a sack on the same play, 26 times? I always thought the QB had to possess the ball in order to be sacked”
If you bothered looking, I corrected myself from that post you were referring too.
“Rodgers may be holding the ball trying to wait for receivers to get open, but he needs to be able to sense the pressure. It’s called pocket presence, and Rodgers has none. If no one is open, and the pocket is collapsing, throw it away.”
Or better yet….run it. That is why he is top rushing QB this season. He sometimes escapes alot of the sacks by running.
and quit trying to think the reason why Rodgers isn’t throwing the ball out of bounds is to protect his precious stats. It is because he has no time too since nearly all the sacks have come in nearly two seconds after the snap. He has thrown it away quite a few times as well.

    @ Vox’s Mommy
Listen “Homer”, whatever the hell that means, I watch football from 11am til 12pm on Sundays, every Sunday regardless of who is playing. I root for certain teams, usually the team that is playing the Steelers, any NFC east team, and any team playing the Patriots because my in laws are from New England and are all fans. I also almost always pull for the underdogs. I know more about the football in and outs than your average fan, however I will not specifically say I know more than any specific person because I cannot prove that. Football is the only sport not only that I watch but give a damn about. I was more so just busting your b*lls or whatever is left of them. My team has the same record as yours and both of our QB’s are equally on fire at this present time and should we meet in what I think the NFL has moved to late February, then it will be game on. Don’t take things so personally chief.
To be honest I am a big Chiefs supporter so again, I was just busting your b*lls.

Where, exactly, are you pulling your info from, because it sounds like BS. I’ve seen Rodgers take sacks outside of the pocket, and not many occur under 2 seconds. Even his own teammates are saying he holds the ball too long. But I guess since you say it’s not his fault, it must be gospel…
Yes, running it would be an option. But on 37 occasions, he decided to just eat the ball. Nice little plug on the QB rushing leader, but 214 yards is nothing to really brag about, especially considering how many yards he has lost and drives he has killed with all those sacks.
If he’s such a great scrambler, he should be able to avoid a lot more sacks by rolling out, and if no one is open, tossing one into the stands. But he chooses to take the sack, which sure makes it look like stat protecting.

I found the stats from a good article in an ESPN blog. According to what I saw, only 11 of the 37 sacks came after 4 seconds. In other words, Rodgers was holding the ball too long in 11 of the 37 sacks taken.
    http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/tag/_/name/aaron-rodgers
and of course Rodgers’ rushing numbers aren’t impressive to you. But if it was Favre, you will be all over it.

Yes, if Favre had 214 rushing yards, that would be impressive, he’s 40 years old.
As for that article, I wouldn’t take anything written by Kevin Seifert (or ESPN altogether) seriously. I see all the 4+ second sacks, but what about all the 3.5, 3.7, etc. That’s more than enough time on a standard 3 step drop.
The bottom line is he holds it too long, even his teammates and coaches have called him on it.
