Bengals safety Roy Williams placed on injured reserve

While one Roy Williams has disappointed in Dallas, the former Cowboy safety Roy Williams has been trying to revive his career with the Bengals.

The strong safety played well while starting four games in Cincinnati, but the team was forced to end his season Friday when it placed him on injured reserve with a forearm injury. The chronic forearm problem for Williams also ended his 2008 season early.

Williams returned Wednesday to a full practice before sitting out Thursday, so it appears he suffered a setback.  The Bengals are relatively deep at the position with Chinedum “Nedu” Ndukwe taking over.  Hard Knocks favorite Tom Nelson will now be more involved in the defense.

Williams’ absence will hurt the Bengals rush defense, but they have got used to playing without him all year.  He will be a free agent this offseason.

The Bengals activated wideout Maurice Purify, who will help take Chris Henry’s place among the wideout group.

Career over. This guy sucked anyway. the reason he has/had to horse collar is the terrible angles he takes to the ball carrier. So overated it isn’t funny.

It’s Chinedum Ndukwe. Not Nedu. Come on Rosenthal.

Word of advice for Mr. Williams- Mix it up a little, go lefty. A little “Stranger” action now and again does a body good.

yeah Williams while he hit hard we gave up some pass yards while he was there….he was a leader and did OK Ndukwe has helped to improve the pass defense is better in pass coverage….
Purify 6-3 225-230 is a big and physical run blocking receiver as we know we will need ALL 11 TO BLOCK IN THE RUN GAME against Pitt….The rumor has it that in practice he has played the Scout teams receiver and has made more catches on Hall and Joseph then Holmes, Marshall and Mason did in games…..
“I want to help block in the run game!!”
    -Maurice Purify

Crap! I like Chinedum Ndukwe, but he’s out of position a lot and tends to get beat on deep posts…a lot. It doesn’t hurt our run defense as Ndukwe loves to hit and be as physical as Williams, if not more so. But if you noticed, our pass defense has struggled a bit more with Chinedum in there, especially on running back screens and passes to tight ends, positions generally covered by a linebacker or a safety.
I like the Purify move now though, as predicted by another Bengals fan in the Chris Henry injury article a few days ago. I didn’t realize he had so much more “physicality” over Simpson.

    Chinedum Ndukwe

  7. leatherneck says: Nov 13, 2009 1:26 PM

Now we get to see if Purify will be good.

  8. CurseofBoJackson says: Nov 13, 2009 1:36 PM

Nedu? Really Gregg, REALLY? God Damn son, the guy’s name is Chinedum, how the hell do you only end up with the middle of his name? Piss Poor.
Chine is a good safety, and gets better every game, but not having Roy the rest of the season hurts, we’ll miss that presence over the middle, especially this weekend.
The activation of Purify isi the right move, Jerome Simpson is nowhere near where he needs to be to make a serious contrbution on this team, and Maurice has the pedigree as well as the size and hands to make a positive difference in all aspects.

  9. Gregg Rosenthal says: Nov 13, 2009 1:36 PM

He goes by Nedu. I expect more from folks like BengalsDouche2.

I like Ndukwe better anyway. He was solid in last years disaster season, and I thought they were putting Williams ahead of him on the depth chart prematurely. Agree to disagree with shinsnake, the secondary is better against the pass with Ndukwe in. Sucks for Williams though.
If the bengals were playing oakland this week, i think simpson would have gotten the nod. shows you something about the commitment to the run, and the physical game.
with henry’s past success against the ‘lers, maybe simpson would have helped more, IMO

  11. shinsnake says: Nov 13, 2009 1:49 PM

Really? I’ve never heard anyone call him Nedu. Everyone on the talk shows, his teammates, broadcasters, even the media around town call him Chine (CHIN-NEE) or Chinedum. I’m not saying your wrong, just never heard it. Did they call him that at Notre Dame?

  12. jj jones says: Nov 13, 2009 1:58 PM

Most overrated player of the decade.

  13. CurseofBoJackson says: Nov 13, 2009 2:13 PM

Yea, never heard him referred to as “Nedu,” and you wouldn’t have used a nickname/shortened version for a player that most outside of South Bend and Cincy have ever even heard of, Nice try though.

  14. billyt0020 says: Nov 13, 2009 2:20 PM

His friends call him nedu. My girl went to high school with him at dublin coffman where he was a receiver. Hasn’t caught on in cincy yet.

  15. crex43 says: Nov 13, 2009 2:21 PM

“Nedu” is the name he has on Madden, which almost automatically means it’s wrong. I’ve heard him referred to as “Chinny” many times. The issue isn’t that “Nedu” isn’t his nickname – it very well may be, but what’s the point in putting that nickname in quotations when NOBODY uses it? There is no use for a nickname that nobody uses.

  16. KA24 says: Nov 13, 2009 3:05 PM

I went to high school with him. Nedu is what he went by. That is what everyone called him. That’s what he was called by the local media as well.

  17. Laxer37 says: Nov 13, 2009 3:12 PM

    Nedu, Chinny, who cares?
All that you need to know about the guy is that he needs to keep his head on a swivel or Hines Ward will put him to sleep.

  18. Quagmire says: Nov 13, 2009 3:16 PM

So with the repeated forearm injuries you’re saying Roy is limp-wristed?

  19. BENITO says: Nov 13, 2009 3:16 PM

who cares what his nickname is tools!

  20. ilivincin97 says: Nov 13, 2009 3:26 PM

Well that sucks, Roy is still a playmaker. I hope the Bengals sign him for next year.

  21. CurseofBoJackson says: Nov 13, 2009 4:04 PM

Head on a swivel head on a swivel head on a swivel head on a swivel head on a swivel head on a swivel. Christ, give it a rest. Try using “dialed up” As in “Remember that time Santonio Holmes came across the middle to make a catch and Chris Crocker dialed up a wicked knock out punch?”

  22. Crip2knight says: Nov 13, 2009 4:10 PM

First name is pronounced “CHIN-uh-doom,” and last name is pronounced “en-DUKE-way.”
I am a college friend of Ike Ndukwe from NorthWestern. He also called him Nedu pronounced “Neh-doo.”
Cincy fans call him Chinny, a nickname Marvin Lewis mentioned while he was in his first rookie mini camp.
He is a stud and will get better as he gets more and more playing time. As far as Heinz Ward…. Child PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. TheOne says: Nov 13, 2009 4:24 PM

PayDoh….are you dumb? I think you are, because Roy Williams did and does not suck.. Yea he is getting old and towards the end of his career maybe, but he does not suck.

  24. goetta-head says: Nov 13, 2009 4:33 PM

I would be surprised if anyone with a name Chinedum Ndukwe did not have like 50 nicknames!
Purify is a beast and will be a MAJOR player this week, same with Coles…watch.

  25. Canyonero says: Nov 13, 2009 7:25 PM

    Maurice Purify — wicked name!

  26. WhoPlaysWhere says: Nov 14, 2009 8:40 AM

Gregg, thanks for posting a response. He doesn’t go by “Nedu” unless he goes by Nedu by the PFT staff and you guys are just so fricking sweet, it will stick just because you say so.
    Try Chinny, clown!

  27. BengalsDouche2 says: Nov 14, 2009 11:05 AM

Not once have I EVER heard anyone call him Nedu. I was just assuming you took on Florio’s ignorance of players’ names. I’ve heard Chinny or Chinedum. That’s it.

  28. jupe says: Nov 14, 2009 1:29 PM

Congrats to Purify. Along with Rey, there are now two ex-Eureka, CA HS Loggers on the squad. I’m sure they will enjoy playing at the Oakland Coliseum next week.
