Cutler fined $20,000 for "abusive conduct"

Jay Cutler has doled out a lot of abuse of late.

He punished Bears fans and fantasy owners with five interceptions Thursday night, not to mention viewers tuning in to Thursday Night Football looking for a quality game.

Now he’s been fined $20,000 for “abusive conduct” toward a game official in Chicago’s loss to the Cardinals five days ago, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Cutler was flagged during the game for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when he complained to referee Ed Hochuli about a non-call on a fourth-and-4 in the third quarter in which Cutler thought Greg Olsen was held.

See, Mike: Cutler does care!

(Amazingly, Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris was fined only $7,500 for punching Cardinals guard Deuce Lutui in the same game.)

Can someone tell me where all this fine money goes?

  2. chapnasty says: Nov 13, 2009 1:36 PM

Thank you Caz. I am assuming it goes to some pool for teams that cant fill their stadiums because they sure are fining absoultely everyone for anything this year.

I guess if your name is not Tom Brady, you can’t ask the ref’s for a call.

  4. BillsFan27 says: Nov 13, 2009 1:39 PM

I’ll take a stab in the dark and assume Cutler mentioned that blown call ol’ Ed made in that Broncos-Chargers game last year. The one that made Hochuli a household name.
“Hey Ed, you cheated on my behalf once – can’t you do it again?! F**king zebra…”

  5. ncm42 says: Nov 13, 2009 1:39 PM

How is Cutler fined more than double what T. Harris was fined? Harris took cheap shots at an opponent who was in a defenseless position. Cutler hurt the feelings of “Pythons” Hochuli? Maybe this is the ref’s way of making up for the missed call in last year’s DEN-SD game…

Quality game? 10-6 final score and cutler’s 5 picks. Wasn’t the hype for this game singletary’s return to chicago. Good reason to put a game on primetime, and make it the first one of the season.

After seeing some of the calls this season, especially in Patriots’ games, absolutely nothing would surprise me from an investigation into NFL refs.

Out of all refs, Cutler should be extremely nice to Ed Hoculi. Hoculi helped give Cutler his only non-losing season.
As a bolts fan, I really miss that overrated d-bag being in our division. It’s still fun to watch the rest of the world slowly understand how bad he really is.

  18. purpleguy says: Nov 13, 2009 1:59 PM

Harris punches a guy in the face and gets $7,500, and Cutler hurts a reff’s feelings and gets hit with $20,000? I’m not a big Cutler fan, but that seems pretty weak.

  20. Deel says: Nov 13, 2009 2:02 PM

Punching a helpless guy in the face is less a finagle offense then yelling at an ref, wearing a non-sanctioned sponsor hat to a media day, or wearing a non-conforming chin strap (second offense). Well that’s reasonable.

  21. RaiderMight says: Nov 13, 2009 2:04 PM

First; I guess it doesn’t pay to be a whinny QB. :)
Second: It is a little disconcerning the level difference in some of the punishments:
“(Amazingly, Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris was fined only $7,500 for punching Cardinals guard Deuce Lutui in the same game.)”
Same thing with Ochocinco’s stunt costing him similar amount, but T. Harris only gets fined $7,500 for punching someone? Can you imagine if he punched Tom Brady? Would be fined at least $100k for that. :)

haha where? I’ve watched every single Patriots game this year. It seems like the Pats are on the wrong side of roughing the passer penalties most of the time. Statistically, roughing the passer penalties are down from 2001… but everyone chooses to see what they want to see – or what Joey Porter tells him.

Only someone as good looking as Tom Brady can order the ref to throw a flag. If your as goofy as Cutler your lucking your even on a team at this point. If he keeps playing the way he’s playing he’ll be on the bench and may need to practice for a while before he ever starts again.

  41. Sasquash says: Nov 13, 2009 3:32 PM

Turd Fergison sketch on SNL was great. Talking smack on a message board with other common folk makes as much sense as dogging Cutler after half a season. I don’t know if Cutler is a good QB or not, but he appears to have the abilities to be a great QB. The problem is the teams hes been on suck. Denver’s defense was a joke last season, they also had a revolving door at RB which can’t help with continuty. Now hes on a team that has a very questionable line, no legit 1 WR or a 2 for that matter. The Bears play calling isn’t fooling anyone. Cutler has a riffle to stretch the feild, and they try like 15 wr screens last night. He has no chance with that coaching staff or team at this current time. I don’t know if Cutler has it, but he can’t have it on the crappy teams hes been on the last two years. Turd Ferg you rule.

  47. Deb says: Nov 13, 2009 4:48 PM

Turd Furguson may have been a brilliant SNL sketch, but on PFT he’s a jackass. Sorry, I usually try to be more clever, but that about sums it up. Today the best he could do was rip a guy whose team he hates over a minor typo. Woohoo.
    Moving on …
There’s a difference between Brady waving for a flag and Cutler yelling at a ref for not throwing a flag. If Cutler used abusive language toward an official, the league will come down hard on that. And it couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. The egomaniac should have been fined $20,000 for saying he was better than Elway (and I’m not even a Denver fan). The guy makes millions and threw five pics. If I were a Bears fan, I wouldn’t care why he got fined, I’d be happy he was paying $4 thou a pic after that miserable performance.

  57. Route36West says: Nov 13, 2009 7:57 PM

See this is what I was talking about. The only way players are going to stop the illegal hits are if they are ejected for it. Now I know thats not what happened here in the Tom Harris case he threw a punch and the league has alwasy ejected players for that. But the point is still valid. Thursday night when the Bears played the 49ers from what I seen harris was on his best behavior, he didnt take any questionable shots at the opposing team and thats what the NFL wants. He could no longer use the excuse ” I am not going to change the way I play, I am going to do everything possible to help my team win” because now he knows if he does make a dirty hit he will be ejected and he wont be able to help his team.
That is the only way these hits are going to stop if there are more serious penalties for it. Fines obviously won’t work on the players that love this game because they want to win beyond anything else even if it costs them money but if its not money its costing them and its actually something that will hurt there team then they will stop.

  58. Sixburgh says: Nov 13, 2009 8:10 PM

    @ Shit Furguson
Dumbass! What don’t you understand?! I ask you a simple question and your like “Uhh what huh”? “What do you mean” I can see who rides the short bus! Obviously, you won’t tell me who your favorite team is, probably because they play like shit. Your too afraid to name them because of the criticism you will recieve because of it. So please next time you decide to bash a team, which your lowlife probably knows nothing about, you man up and be willing to take the criticism that your so afraid of. Understand? Do you want me to meet you sometime and explain this to your face? Just incase your dumbass can’t comprehend what I’m saying.

  59. Deb says: Nov 13, 2009 10:03 PM

@Furguson … I was paraphrasing. His “stronger than Elway” arm has been really impressive lately. Pity it’s not in some way connected to a brain that recognizes Chicago uniforms.
Hon, when you have nothing more intellectual to contribute to a forum than junior-high jibes at Steeler fans, you probably shouldn’t talk about other people being simple-minded. The ref threw the flag at almost the instant Brady waved for it. I doubt Brady responded by telling him to F-off. Cutler didn’t get what he wanted. He threw a tantrum. Boys will be boys. (I’m sure you, of all people, get that.) It cost him $20thou. Moral: Don’t mouth of to ref.

  60. Deb says: Nov 13, 2009 10:15 PM

@Furguson … Before you start, yes, the moral is Don’t mouth OFF to ref. It’s been a long day.

  62. comment_submission_error says: Nov 14, 2009 10:23 PM

Wow, even the league thinks Cutler is a pussy. That guy is really getting exposed. When he was in Denver the defense got the blame for his lousy record. Last Thursday his defense absorbed 5 picks and still only allowed 10 points. Big arm, small brain, no leadership skills. Enjoy, Chicago.
