When the Falcons signed veteran tailback Aaron Stecker late last month in advance of their Week Eight showdown with the Saints, the thinking was that coach Mike Smith was hoping to pick the brain of a player who had spent five years with the Saints — and all three under coach Sean Payton.
Though the Falcons kept Stecker for one game beyond the Monday nighter at New Orleans, Stecker has been dumped on the eve of a visit to Charlotte for a game against the Panthers.
The Falcons announced the move earlier this evening.
In two games, Stecker had two carries for six yards. The decision to dump Stecker could be an indication that running back Jerious Norwood is ready to return from a three-game absence due to a hip injury. Norwood is listed as question for Sunday’s game.
In Stecker’s place, the Falcons have re-signed receiver Troy Bergeron, a former Arena League player who bounced on and off the roster during the offseason.
…harsh b’iness – the NFL…
prm…
He was probably released because Snelling is back… Not Norwood…
Florio, you missed the real story here. This might be the end of a career for the 2000 NFL Europe Offensive MVP for the Scottish Claymores! Did that team have kilts for uniform pants? I don’t remember.
Stecker was released due to Snelling’s return plus a need for WR depth – Finneran is questionable with a knee, and Jenkins has the dreaded ‘undisclosed illness”.
did they really need him for the Saints game? hell by gametime he was useless to the fakons since only knowledge was what they wanted. shame it’s a practice seen too much- but it is what it is.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm……………. WR Michael Jenkins is questionable along with other starter Roddy White so Marty Booker could end up starting and Brian Finneran was the No. 3 and he’ll be out too no diggity so we’ll see some play maybe by return man Eric Weems and the aforementioned Troy Bergeron so there’ll be lots of two tight end sets with Tony Gonzalez and Justin Peelle who are fine pass catchers and Keith Zinger is a mauling blocker with hands of Williamson but we’ll focus on the running game with a rejuvenated Michael Turner with FB Ovie Mughelli leading the way while Jason Snelling plows his way back from injury with his last game a nice one versus the Cowboys of 7 carries for 68 yards.
Against the Panthers tomorrow in Carolina: no problems.
Stecker, Green Bay native.
Stecker is still the best high school running back that I have ever seen. Playing at Ashwaubenon in the shadow of Lambeau Field, he OWNED. Another team would be wise to pick him up.
