Bengals take control of AFC North

Today’s field goal fest in Pittsburgh wasn’t always pretty, but the Cincinnati Bengals will gladly take their 18-12 win over the Steelers, a game that has put the Bengals in the driver’s seat in the AFC North.

The win improves the Bengals’ record to 7-2 and drops the Steelers to 6-3, and gives Cincinnati a series sweep over Pittsburgh. No matter how the rest of the season plays out, the Bengals, who are 5-0 in the division, will win any tiebreaker with either the Steelers or the Baltimore Ravens for the division title.

In today’s game, both teams kicked four field goals, but the difference was that the Bengals also got a 96-yard kickoff return touchdown from Bernard Scott.

The biggest issue facing Cincinnati now is the health of running back Cedric Benson, who left the game with a hip injury. If Benson’s injury is serious, that would be a big loss for the Bengals. But for now, they control their division.

Hey Steelers fans Bahahahahahahahahaha! I’m not saying the Bengals are going to win the superbowl but we came to your house and kicked your asses. Now lets here all the excuses about bad calls or the offense just sucked or whatever else you can come up with. Bahahahaha can’t wait to hear all the lame excuses. All the crap you guys talked, look at what happened. I can’t wait to see the Ravens do the same to you. Who Dey? Not the Steelers or Ravens

  2. pfii63 says: Nov 15, 2009 4:41 PM

I hope all those Steelers fans who talked after the last game about how invincible their team is will be sure to pipe in here on how their team is still going to win the division and get a first round bye. LOL!
    Nice job, Bengals!

    Where is that douchebag SteelerPride?
    That’s right, WHO DEY!!!
Called it yesterday and said Bengals would win. Only question now is whether the Steeler fans will hide out, or actually come on here and give credit where its due. My guess is that the fans like SteelerPride will come on here and make excuses and show themselves as the douchebag clowns that they are becoming just like Pats fans.

    hahahahahahahaha…… 18-12!!!!!!
So much for the blow out all you Steeler fans predicted!!!! HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  6. mborz says: Nov 15, 2009 4:47 PM

Hats off to the Bengals. I expected you guys to be tough this year, but honestly didn’t expect a sweep of both the us (Steelers) and Ravens and likely a sweep of the whole division. Well done.

  7. steveinohio says: Nov 15, 2009 4:49 PM

Benson came back in the game after the injury and he was obviously frustrated he wasn’t allowed to continue on in the game. that tells me the injury isn’t going to be that bad. I’m not worried. now, we need to pass the hat and take up a collection for all the loudmouth Steelers fans that smashed their laptops into their bigscreens. hahahahahahaha. WHO DEY! sweep beyatch.

  8. Osterhouse says: Nov 15, 2009 4:49 PM

Steelers fans deserved this. A coming back down to earth game. Not as good as their shit-talking would indicate eh?

  9. WhoDey75 says: Nov 15, 2009 4:51 PM

    Who Dey!!!

  10. HairClubPresident says: Nov 15, 2009 4:52 PM

Sweep. Count it. See you in the playoffs, Pitt.
Gotta hand it to Reed and Graham for keeping it interesting. But I don’t like Reed, so nevermind.

  11. ochostinko says: Nov 15, 2009 4:52 PM

I am absolutely loving it. I read post after post this week from obnoxious Steelers fans who kept running their mouths about how they were going to destroy the Bengals. Big Ben was going to light us up… James Harrison was going to crush Palmer… BLAH BLAH BLAH
Now those a$$holes can take their terrible towels and wipe away their tears since they just got SWEPT by the Bengals. Who dey!

this reminds me of somethign i posted on the preseason power rankings #18 (or thereabouts)

    Hooby says:
    September 5, 2009 1:15 AM
YES! congrats florio, your first correct ranking ever! ive been saying it for a while now, the bengals are way to underrated. a weak oline, yes, but theyve got 2 possibly 3 great wrs and a severly underrated back in benson, plus a franchise qb. the defense isnt too bad and with rey maualuga added, theyve got plenty of room for improvement, i say they go 8-8 or better…
SAVE THIS POST, its gonna be a prophecy come true

  16. Bitchplease says: Nov 15, 2009 5:09 PM

Steelers = overrated – Should be 5-4 if not for a phantom tripping call against the Vikings.

  17. getlikeme says: Nov 15, 2009 5:09 PM

Bet you wont pick against them any more this year, huh Florio?
But for some reason, I have a feeling when your power rankings come out, you’ll still find a way to put the Steelers one spot ahead of the Bengals.
If Cinti’s not a top three team now, well, the Skins will win the Super Bowl.
    Wait, that was your pick…

  18. BornSlippy says: Nov 15, 2009 5:09 PM

I know both teams are good. But you need better offense then that to win in january.

  20. Deb says: Nov 15, 2009 5:11 PM

The Bengals played a great game and won an important division victory. It’s a disappointing loss for us, but there’s NO chance I’m going to whine about injuries or refs the way the rest of the football universe does when the Steelers win. We didn’t get it done. You did. Congratulations on the sweep.

I was impressed with them and you should be proud of the team . Goodluck with the rest of the season . Maybe we will meet for a third time . But again it was a great win for the Bengals they deserve all the credit in the world for a great game played .

To be the man you have to beat the man . No way in hell the Bungles come into Pittsburgh and win this game . The last game slipped through the fingers of the Steelers it wont happen this time . I smell a blowout in this game . About the samething we did to Denver on MNF .
Sorry Bengals it was good while it lasted . But this is where the big boys come to play . They wont make the same mistakes this time . See you in the playoffs if you dont fall apart before the playoffs happen . See you sunday kisses .

Pretty spot on, there, buddy. Got any other gems now? I know – you could tell us all how many Superbowl rings the Steelers have! I mean, that’s gotta be relevant to this season somehow, right? Or maybe refer to the team that straight whupped the Steelers ass twice this season as “Bungles” some more – that always makes you lot look intelligent. In any event, the Bungles own the Steelers this year. Have fun racing for the wild card. XOXOXO

I know they just swept their divisional opponents in arguably the toughest division in football and one freak play away from being 8-1 …they just don’t scare me for some reason. I mean what more do they have to do? We should be giving them respect yet I’d feel really good if my team was playing them next week.

  26. Richm2256 says: Nov 15, 2009 5:24 PM

I want to hear from every PFT poster that was on here yesterday yapping about what a great game this was going to be – way better than Indy/New England, you all said.
What a friggin’ snooze fest this game was! Two great quarterbacks, and THIS is what we got for offense????
Sit back, stooges, and watch the Colts/Pats put on a show tonight and show you what two great QBs REALLY play like.
By the way, can someone tell me why Ben Roethlisberger was so intent going for the TD strike his last four throws, instead of working for the first down? He had a minute and a half, fer Pete’s sake.

  34. suprchrge says: Nov 15, 2009 5:59 PM

All the “experts” talked about how Pittsburgh is unstoppable at home and will have the clear edge in this game, notwithstanding the fact that the Bengals beat them already. Are these clowns finally going to give Cincinnati some credit.
Great team. Great defense. The offense had a lackluster performance but they lost Benson and were playing one of the top defenses. Give credit where credit is due.

  35. i'm president charlie! says: Nov 15, 2009 5:59 PM

great game by both teams. the special teams touchdown was a backbreaker. the bengals were the better team today and i hope the steelers get a rematch in the playoffs.
the bengals defense suffocated the steelers run game and even w/out rivers and odom they brought big time pressure on ben (better than anyone the steelers have played all season).
the bengals offensive line was pushing the steelers defensive front around all day. the steelers pass rush was non existent.
lots of time left in the season. dont blink cuz things can change real fast.

  36. yinzburgh says: Nov 15, 2009 6:23 PM

Let me kindly remind the bungles fans that the regular season means nothing. As long as we make the playoffs and get another crack at them that’s all I’m concerned with. Oh last time yinz got a big head and won the division we went on the win the only game that’s worth bragging about. So until you knock us out of the playoffs and win the superbowl keep your mouths shut or your fingers off the keyboards in this case.
    We still dey bitches!

  37. Big Ten Inch says: Nov 15, 2009 6:24 PM

Dude, you snoozed through two of the best defenses in the league, that’s why it wasn’t a barn burner. I’ll check back with your dumbass tomorrow morning. BTW, take Brady’s D*^k out of your mouth, you can enunciate better that way.

  40. Deb says: Nov 15, 2009 6:27 PM

@Richm2256 … I never heard anyone say it was going to be better than Indy/Pats. Low-scoring games usually mean good defensive play and some of us appreciate that kind of game. To answer your last question, I’m not sure, but my guess would be that decision was made by Bruce Arians, the Steelers’ OC. The Bengals defense did a great job on the series.

  41. ppdoc13 says: Nov 15, 2009 6:29 PM

Congrats to the Bengals. You kicked our ass twice and now the Squealers as well. You deserve to win the division. Where the hell is Frank Burns? Sore loser much? Probably crawled back under the rock with his picture of his mommy.

So you guys could just stop playing right? Oh wait, you have to play and win to make the playoff’s don’t you? getting a bit ahead of yourself aren’t you? yinzburgh …. typical idiot Steelers fan.
Your team gets beat not once, but TWICE this year by the Bengals – at home, mind you – possibly costing the Steelers the division and maybe even a bye in the first round, and instead of being humbles and handing it to the Bengals, you spout off that the “regular season means nothing”.
No doubt if the Steelers won both games, it would mean something THEN, right?
Your team got beat twice, sit down and shut up.
You are right about one thing though; the Steelers this year ARE the Bengals bitches, and the Bengals apparently beat their bitches.
By the way Bengals fans, you shouldn’t be yakking too loud either, with an offense like that you’re not going too far against a good defense.

  46. Bdrunk says: Nov 15, 2009 6:47 PM

GG Bengals, you pushed the big ol’ bullies around and won in their house.
No excuses from this Steeler fan. In a very defensive game, the Bengals O sucked less.
Savor it, enjoy it, but finish strong, and if you face the Patsies in the playoffs I hope you knock their junk in the dirt as well.

  47. Ravenmaniac says: Nov 15, 2009 6:48 PM

  49. Trox says: Nov 15, 2009 6:54 PM

    @Yinzburgh
Another Steelers fan losing graciously as per usual. No one here is surprised…We take beatings from you year after year and I am always a man about it. Your vagina is probably pretty sore this evening. If you guys see us in the playoffs this year you won’t have cheap ass Bill Cower and his gigantic jaw telling a lineman to go crocodile roll on Carson’s knee. Lucky for us, and to his credit Tomlin is too classy to take cheap shots. I love how Steeler fans just can’t bear it to a point that you are all in complete denial or, in Yinz’s case, totally delusional. The regular season only matters when YOU win? Right? But you didn’t and you won’t, so I guess that’s why you can’t just be a man and own it.
Tomorrow I won’t have to hear a word from any fairweather ass bandwagon jumping Steelers fans in Cincinnati. I wonder where they all will have gone? You are 0-2 against the “bungles” this year douche bag! Yins can suck one..except Yins is not and will never be a word. Maybe you should stop talking or keep your fingers off of the keyboard. SCOREBOARD!
You are definitely not “dey”. Tell me how our ass tastes.

Who knows, the two teams may meet again this season?
    GO STEELERS!

We basically out-Steelered the Steelers today – great job, Bengals!
Red-zone defense was suffocating, but what’s up with Pittsburgh throwing on third-and-whatever every single time? Pretty predictable.
Oh, and for the first time Big Ben’s vaunted pump-fakes were rendered ineffective.
Looking forward to sweeping the division with a win at home over Cleveland, and I also look forward to seeing the Ravens and Steelers cancel each other out when they meet twice in the next month.

Congrats to the bengals for a big win! Special teams will win regular season games.
Its funny how when the bengals actually win something they all come out of thier holes and want accolades….well guess what morons, you havent won shit. If you lose the first round of the playoffs, or dont make it for that matter this game means a bunch of …..nothin!!

    @tleg81 …
If you search PFT, you won’t find ONE post from me about “Bungles” or how we’re going to smash, crush, yada yada, the Bengals. That’s because I don’t mouth off before games or count wins in advance. But there are plenty of Steeler fans who do. So you can’t blame these guys for saying “Where are those Steelers fans now?” It ain’t fun to lose, but if you’re gonna be a fan, you’ve gotta take the bad with the good. And if people are going to open their big yaps, they should have the guts to come here and take their HIT. To say the Bengals won nothing today and regular season games don’t count is absolute bull! There’s a good chance they just secured the division and a home-field advantage IF we get a wildcard spot and meet them again. That’s a pretty good get. And they earned it.
I’m a Steelers fan. I don’t whine. We should give them their props.

  73. The Jimmy says: Nov 15, 2009 8:24 PM

@ Steelers Fans who talked shit all week……..”tell me how my ass tastes?”
So sick of the clown Steeler fans, I am loving all the “see you in January/ playoffs are where it matters/ etc.”
Face it, your team is not as good as the Bengals this year.
I’ll be on the phone to 513-521-TDTD tomorrow to make sure my season ticket seats are locked down for the playoffs.
One thing is guaranteed, there will be a playoff game in Cincinnati this season!
BTW, anyone who criticizes the Bengals offense is plain stupid. Steelers were/are leading in most every category. Winning a game against that defense is a great victory.

Was a good defensive battle…Great game to watch…..Not a fan of either team, but you have to respect the bengals front four, they were impressive, and with a first name like Frostee, ….You better be a bad ass…….lol

Said it before and I’ll say it again — Cinci will be better than both B-more and Cleveland this year.
They’re the ones we’re gonna need to watch our backs on. Bank on that.
I’ll actually bookmark this post and we’ll come back to it in December regardless of the outcome. Any doubters are welcome to do the same if they think I’m bluffing.

WOW! Alot of Bengals fans thumping their chests today. Congratulations you swept the Steelers, this is arguably the biggest day in your franchises history.
However, lets be realistic already. No way in hell are you finishing the season better than 11-5. I know you are on a high right now, but its the NFL and you have to BRING IT every week.
And now you have a target on your back.
You will lose at least two games that you expect to win…it is inevitable. You should never overlook any games especially the back to back road games at Minny and San Diego. Most inteligent fans know this, so I will give you a pass since this is new to some of you.
Reality will set in and you will be back in Bungle mode.
    Cheers.

Your team is not all that intimidating anymore..
consider your team owned by the bengals this year.
You really look like a typical squeeler fan when you type…. go play in traffic

Add Kravon to the list of 13 year old agitators.
There is one thing that was very clear at the end of today’s game. The better team won.
Won without Keith Rivers. Without Cedric Benson for 90 percent of the game. Without Roy Williams. Without Odom.
With a rookie late round RB who won the game for us with his juke out of your pants kickoff return.
Wow. I love it. How any Steeler fan can talk any form of trash talk right now just shows how embarrassed they are, and they have to talk to calm their own fears.
Face it McKees (sp?) Rocks illiterates…. you are not the best team in the AFC North anymore.
Deal with it. Maybe some of you should buy a ticket to the Pirates next year and try to keep them in your city. That would be a better use of your time.

My God at least put a few winning seasons together and actually win some playoff games before you act like your team deserves any respect!
But I guess it must be nice to win something after like what, 20 years?
Your team out Field Goaled the Steelers today. That’s it! Wow that was a great offensive effort today by Palmer.

  86. blester01 says: Nov 16, 2009 12:39 AM

Great win for my Bengals, but do people really need to act like such douches on both sides?
Fact is this was a big game for getting to the postseason. Bengals now have the upper-hand, but a lot can happen the next couple of weeks. For instance, the Bengals can easily lose next week in Oakland- historically we have never traveled well out to the west coast and they can have an emotional letdown after two grinding weeks.
Also the Steelers are no way done for the season- I think they have a good chance to sweep the Ravens, and they are always dangerous at the end of the season.
Is it me or does this Bengals team remind you of the Ohio State team that beat Miami in the National Championship: an ugly grinding offense with a shut down defense?

Oh last time yinz got a big head and won the division we went on the win the only game that’s worth bragging about. So until you knock us out of the playoffs and win the superbowl keep your mouths shut or your fingers off the keyboards in this case.

    —————————————————
People talk smack in every thread after every game. To say that the Steelers were flat is wrong. Our defense took them completely out of their game plan. Cincinnati had the #2 run defense and shut down Mendenhall. Big Ben was supposed to carve us up, but our corners blanketed his receivers so well he ran out of time and took him to the ground.
Pittsburgh was the hottest team in the league next to Indy and New Orleans. They had won 5 straight, scoring atleast 28 points per game. They were top 5 in overall offense and defense, and still lost. Everything was rolling for them, they have no excuses. We lost the #2 rusher in the entire league after only 7 carries, replaced him with a rookie 2nd stringer from a Division 2 school, and he does enough to help us win.
That was the kind of play you see good teams when it matters most, and Cincinnati did that. I see you’re in San Diego, and your team has turned it around so far, but I still wouldn’t get too cocky. If not for beating a struggling Giants team at the end of the game your playoff hopes would be on life support too. I’m not saying we’ll roll over you guys, because there is no way to tell. I guess what i’m saying is wait till a little closer to game time before you start predicting victory over us.

  89. Igottz5onit says: Nov 16, 2009 3:36 AM

First of all, congratulations to all the Bengals and Bengals fans out there, you clearly outplayed us out there and deserved the victory. On the other hand, I am loving all the talk about how we got “straight whooped” two times this season when the total margin of victory of both games was 9 points. Anyways your team has earned my respect for the W but your fans continue to show up like you do not know what it is like to be winners. This was a big game but usually the winning teams, at least the ones who have been there before do not rub the other teams nose in it after they pull off a one score victory and ask questions like “how’s my ass taste”. I am just saying, show some class while you are on the top or karma is gonna make sure you don’t stay there long.

    Attention Steelers Fans,
Did we win the Super Bowl today? NO.
Do we have a shot at winning a Super Bowl this year? To early to tell.
Is your horseshit comment about us “bringing it every week” seem like your bitter? Absolutely. Our two loses were on a fluke play (Denver was the better team that day) and getting stunned/ out played by a Houston team on the rise.
If the Steelers, cant get up for a November game against the AFC North leading Bengals, you might in trouble!
IrishBoy, your an idiot! You have one of two things wrong. Either your a Steelers fan in Southern California, which is bandwagonish at the least or your a Chargers fan which would mean a perenial choke of a team who plays in the weakest division known to the NFL.

every week steeler fans tell us that the true bengals are going to show up sooner or later, and we’re gonna finish the season 8-8. as a bengals fan, the “true” bengals showing up is a huge fear. but the season is getting older and older, and so far, the true bengals look to be pretty legit. if the bengals are going to be the cats ass in the north, then they must win against oakland, cleveland, and detroit. and they shouldn’t have to be hard faught games.
too bad those six rings weren’t playing on the offensive line for you yesterday.

  96. kravon says: Nov 16, 2009 9:10 AM

I cant blame the loss on the Steelers defense.
They havent allowed a touchdown since the second quarter against Minnesota.
The offense was shut down by Cinncy. They deserve the credit.

  97. Holeinone09 says: Nov 16, 2009 9:25 AM

Congrats to the Bengals for playing a very tough game against my Steelers. Sweeping us and the Ravens in the regular season is no easy task, and you did it this year. You have a good team this year and deserve to be at the top of the division right now.
Steelers were completely flat on offense yesterday. Certainly some of it was due to the Bengals playing tough defense, but not all IMO. The line was terrible. Ben had a miserable day. And why did they not try for higher pecentage shorter pass plays on the last drive? It made no sense to throw 2 deep passes when that is what the Bengals were specifically protecting against. Defense played well enough to win. Special teams play might be THE worst in the whole league. At the least, they give up good field position, and at the worst, they give up a TD.
And listen, all the posts about the whining Steelers fans, etc, quite frankly I don’t see many here. Sure there are a couple, but the vast majority are congratulating the Bengals. And that makes the moron haters look even worse than who they say they are talking about. That is pretty funny.
Seven games left and a tough uphill battle. Might be impossible to win the division, but once the playoffs start, it’s a new season. Peaking at the end is better than the beginning or middle. Sometimes a loss will be a learning experience.
    GO STEELERS!

    @holeinone09 …
You’re right … at first there were a couple of embarrassingly whiny Steeler fans, but now the classy fans have showed up in force.
As for the nonsensical final drive, two words: Bruce Arians. The Bengals did a great job on pass rush all day, so why go back to that well over and over on the final drive? We had two minutes. We didn’t need to get it all on the first down. Horrible play-calling. Terrible special-teams coaching.

  102. Steelers4Life says: Nov 16, 2009 12:00 PM

Completely agree Deb. I have no idea what that playcalling was all about at the end of the game for the Steelers. That was the worst attempt at a 2 minute drive from them I think I’ve ever seen (or at least since Ben’s been behind the wheel). We’ve come to expect a lot more of an honest attempt from them over the years.
They’ll take their lumps and move on though and hopefully take a lot of lessons away from this loss.
I’m so disappointed in the ST’s play this year as well. They were so dominant last year (outside of Berger) that I don’t think anyone thought they’d be so pitiful this year. Hopefully they at least put Harrison back on special teams play, that unit needs him back there urgently and he’s more than willing to do it.

  103. blester01 says: Nov 16, 2009 12:27 PM

Glad to see the classy fans showed up after my previous post. Football is much more fun without the idiotic theatrics.
    My observations on your team:
    1. Your OL is not as good as they used to be. They are not as bad as the Bears, but they are not the dominating force they used to be. The Bengals DL matches up well to them since it was designed to play the Ravens & Steelers, which made your line’s weakness more apparent.
    2. Big Ben looked off b/c Zimmer’s game plan was executed perfectly (I never thought I would see the day when the word execution could be used describe a Bengals performance in a positive manner). They took advantages of the OL mismatches, got in his face, and didn’t allow him to escape, which made him force his passes all day. It was like watching Palmer from 2006 & 2007.
    3. Your coordinator probably blew the play calling in the final drives. But since they did have much time all day and Bengals were shutting down the short stuff, in hindsight, it makes sense what he was trying to do b/c historically it would have worked. The Bengals always used to give up the big play at the end so why not take a shot. I still would trade your coordinator for Bratkowski any time.
    4. You have a really good team, and still have a strong shot at making the playoffs or even stealing the division from the Bengals.

  104. Deb says: Nov 16, 2009 1:12 PM

    @blester01 …
Your defense looked great–absolutely taking advantage of OL mismatches and disrupting Ben’s game. As for our OC … well, no, I wouldn’t trade. I’m not a fan of Arians–too inconsistent and can be very one note–but he does have a ring. And the devil you know is better than the one you don’t :-) For us to steal the division, we’d need to win out and have Cincy drop two. Like you say, we’re a good team and it could happen. You have a couple of tough matches ahead–but so do we. Well, at least we’re all keeping it interesting!

The first place schedule doesn’t always mean much. There are only 2 teams on your schedule that we won’t face, the 3-6 Titans you beat in week 1, and the 4-5 Dolphins. Sure, it seemed like 2 very difficult games BEFORE the season, but once games start playing themselves out teams are what they once seemed.
As a 3rd place team from last year, our schedule to this point has actually been more difficult (winning percentage wise) than your 1st place schedule… just going to prove that games are won on paper.
