Sharpe: NFL should fine Ochocinco $250,000

The NFL fined Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco $20,000 for pretending to offer a referee a $1 bribe, but former Broncos and Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe doesn't think that fine was enough.

No, Sharpe thinks Ochocinco should have been fined a lot of money -- a lot of money.

A quarter of a million dollars.

Sharpe said this morning on the CBS pregame show The NFL Today that he thinks even saying something about bribing an official in jest is unacceptable.

"Maybe he didn't mean it," Sharpe said, per Sean Leahy of USA Today. "But when you try to influence or you bring into question the integrity of the National Football League, someone just watching this for the first time, or someone that's really not an avid fan, might say, 'Can they really do this?' "

Somehow I doubt that anyone watching really believed that a player could offer an official a crumpled up dollar bill and get a call reversed -- you don't have to be an "avid fan" to realize Ochocinco was joking.

But Sharpe said it's time to fine Ochocinco an amount of money he'll notice.

"Clearly when you fine Chad $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, he's not getting the message," Sharpe said. "So you fine him $250,000 - he gets the message now and anybody who comes along after Chad and thinks about doing something like this, they better think long and hard because $250,000 is a lot of money. A one dollar bribe is the same as a $20,000 fine to him. It's nothing. Two-hundred thousand dollars sends the message. Chad will stop these shenanigans. He's getting ridiculous with it."

I have a feeling Ochocinco will have something to say about Sharpe's suggestion.

As much as I enjoy watching Chad joke around...I agree with Sharpe. A $20,000 fine doesn't mean anything to anyone in the NFL. Give out some 6 digit fines and maybe the players will realize that they shouldn't f-up. How many players get into fights and get a slap on the wrist? Roger Goodell is suspension happy, but he can't fine someone? I find Chad's jokes about the Lambeau Leap, HOF Jacket, and other random TD dances funny, but to even jokingly bribe an offical is stupid. Goodell had a chance to send a message and he didn't.

Please. The NFL, and the suits who run it, are a joke!
Chad handing an official a crumpled up $1 bill is the least of their worries.

How about all these idiotic rules that make absolutely no sense, like the one in the Cowboys-Packers game where Felix Jones was clearly stripped of the ball while he was on the ground, EVERYBODY could see it, even the officials, and yet "the play cannot be reviewed"?? Why the hell not?

The NFL should focus on fixing crap like this, crap that actually AFFECTS THE GAME on the field. If they're so worried about "protecting the shield" or "protecting the brand" or "their market demographics" or whatever cheesedick marketing M.B.A. phrase they want to throw out there, they should worry first and foremost about the product on the field.
Nothing affects "the shield" more than that.

Shannon Sharpe is and was a complete meatball, but he is absolutely correct here. Chad JOHNSON thinks it's all about him, he is a cancer and no matter how good his team is, he will always put himself first. He is equivalent to Terrell Owens, minus the fact that the Bengals are playing well. 250 large sounds like a good place to start.

Shannon Sharpe has been and will continue to be irrelevant as a football analyst.

But tommy harris punches a player and only gets a fine for $7,500. The league office is a joke when it comes to these fines. Anyone watching the Steelers this season might think tim donahue's brother is wearing a zebra jersey. I think the refs calling the steelers games this year should change the white stripe to a gold stripe to more accurately display the leagues position on the steelers.

That could be the single dumbest thing Sharpe has ever said, which is really saying something considering the amount of garbage this buffoon constantly spews out. Sharpe saying that someone might actually believe Ocho was really trying to bribe an official is like saying that someone might actually believe Sharpe is an intelligent, insightful commentator.

  14. JoeSchmoe says: November 15, 2009 8:39 PM

Anyone who can't see the humor in this is a d-wipe. C'mon grandpa Sharpe and you ultra conservative tight-asses, get over it. There was no messing with the integrity of the game here.

  15. Julius Brown says: November 15, 2009 8:39 PM

Mushmouth Sharpe seems to just be jealous that Chad's getting all the attention he used to get when he played. $20,000 gets the message across just fine. Someone should fine Sharpe for mutilating the king's english on a weekly basis; there are worse things to do in the offseason than take elocution and diction lessons.

MAYBE? I know Shannon's a clown, but I didn't know he was quite this stupid. Ocho didn't mail the guy a bag of money. He jokingly waved around a one dollar bill. It wasn't funny, but it was clearly a joke.

yeah, the NFL and the suits are run it are jokes. Many more important things going on in the league right now such as the abuse of performance enhancing drugs taken by many of the Pittsburgh Steelers players. Mainly James Harrison and James Farrior. Im sorry but a guy who gets cut 2 times then becomes NFL D player of the year has to be juiced on something. Not to mention the roid rage he endures when he beats his wife. Farrior another mediocre player who barely cracked the starting lineup with the Jets at 34, continues to play at a high level. Not to mention the doctor who was caught with massive quantities of hgh who was affiliated w/ the Steelers. Oh but Goodell will brush that under the rug since he's in bed w/ Rooney the Irish bug.

Are you kidding me? Chad is loved by his teammates, Bengals fans, and even fans of other teams (like me) around the league. Comparing him to T.O. is garbage, and reveals either your bias or absolute lack of insight.

  24. VoxVagina says: November 15, 2009 9:17 PM

    @ Fire Ted

Comparing Chad to T.O. is completely retarded. Through his entire career, he has stayed loyal to the Bengals despite wanting a trade to go to a contender in the last 2 offseasons. Cincy just wasn't a very good team, and being a receiver at 30, he logically wanted a chance to get a ring. He never publicly piled on Carson Palmer throughout all their struggles, and he never created a locker room feud. Chad has always been a flashy receiver and he has a big mouth, but he makes the NFL fun and exciting. Most receivers are selfish to a degree and Ocho is no exception. T.O. on the other hand has ruined relationships with 3 quarterbacks, totally destroyed team chemistry, and has been a jackass throughout mostof his career. Even when his teamis winning games easily he complains. He has always been all about himself. The guy goes as far as to make a reality show about his life. As if anyone really cares about him partying and having sex with slutty women. Chad has good intentions, but people just love to hate him. He's a funny guy. He does stupid things from time to time like this fake bribe, but he just wants to have fun.

What is the difference between what Chad Johnson did to what the former NBA ref did that is now out of jail, or Pete Rose? It is the exact same idea. It damages the integrity of the game regardless of the amout that was used for bribery. Many fans get mad at steroids because it makes the player and possibly team look like cheaters. Would bribery not give that same appearance? I think it would. Chicago black sox 1919 scandal anybody...

Tits, well, you're so Steeler obsessed, your name's about them rather than your own team. And alanweiss7979 ... who is Tim Donahue? We had a director of football operations named Tom Donahoe, but he left 10 years ago. Harrison was once arrested for simple assault in a domestic matter concerning a girlfriend but charges were dropped and he completed therapy (you guys might consider a shrink), so I don't know what the wife-beating stuff is about--well, other than you being disgruntled about the Steelers beating your team. As for your drugging accusations, the NFL does test players. Do you know something they don't? Didn't think so. You don't seem to know much of anything ... except how to whine.

I love Big Play Shay, who once picked up a phone on the sideline and said "someone send the National Guard, because we're killing the Patriots.".

So, I'm torn here. I thought the bribery stunt was funny (especially since it appeared to be with a Washington). However, had it been $100 bill, a wad of cash, a check, etc.. it could have really sent a bad signal to casual and first-time viewers. This specific stunt should be contractually banned and carry that 250k+ fine Sharpe yhinks is necessary.

As far as every other stunt #85 pulls... I love #84, the way every real Broncos fan should. But I just don't see him being the guy to lecture current players on "jovial" behavior.

Totally unbiased opinion here, as I could care less about the Steelers. It may be coincidence (it seems very unlikely) that the Steelers get a lot of calls. But you have to admit they get bailed out at some key times by the guys in stripes. The Holmes Super Bowl catch, the Holmes catch that didn't cross the goal line against the Ravens. The entire Super Bowl against the Hawks, especially Ben's TD. The infamous Dugan phantom trip. Or even the 4th and 1 against Cleveland this year that clearly came up short, but Ben was given the 1st to save Pitt the embarrassment of a loss to the Browns. And like I said, I hardly ever watch the Steelers, and I have seen all of this.

I know that this post wasn't originally about this, but the fact that the only fans who don't see the bias are Steeler fans, while 31 other fan bases can see it plain as day is quite maddening. There certainly appears to be a hint of gold in those black and white zebra stripes, maybe it's just hard to see through the sparkle that 6 rings give off, even if a couple of the rings are tarnished.

  43. Anybodyhome says: November 16, 2009 7:08 AM

What's ridiculous is what passes for referees in a league that generates the kind of ching that the NFL does.

At times these refs deserve to be mocked. I remember when Randy Moss squirted the ref with the water bottle, I laughed my ass off, because those refs were jobbing Randy the whole season.

These part-time ref/full time insurance salesmen need to go. Replace them with full time refs, then they will deserve respect and not until.

Next time, Ocho, pull a pair of glasses out of your pocket and offer them to the grandpa who just threw a flag.

And as I recall, both of the Super Bowls happened BEFORE the Dugan call. I'm not 12 years old, and it takes more than one game to form my opinion. And as I recall, our "discussion" was not about the Dugan call, but about the Vikings player who had an official tell him to keep quiet and not mention what happened to his coach, which is yet another example of the black and gold zebras. Much props for showing up after that dismal showing, but that's only one step. The next one is to take off the Terrible Towel Blinders and realize what everyone outside of Pittsburgh already knows.

    Deb,

Thanks for intelligent posts. It's nice to reinforce that women not only possess a significant amount of sport knowledge, but we can talk about it in a mature and intelligent way. Oh, and like Deb, I'm accepting the loss and moving on.

Speaking of the refs, did I miss something, or did my team lose? In a big (and I mean BIG) divisional game, why didn't the refs help us out? If what most of the people are saying is true, then the refs would have thrown a flag here and there to help us out--but they didn't. Oh wait, according to conspiracy theorists, maybe the refs are saving "it" for the two games we have to play against Baltimore.

As for the NFL being pro-Steelers, I seem to remember quite a few AFC championship games against the Pats where we ended up on the losing side (won't go into the video taping). Both the Holmes catches were reviewed, so maybe people should have issues with instant replay. As for Harrison and Farrior, well, aren't men supposed to get better with age?

Let me pretend to be one of those people who believe refs are biased: Brady seems to have the refs in his pocket. Maybe Brady has a personal delivery service send the refs some cash before every game to he can get a ton of roughing the passer calls his way. I mean, who else in the league can turn around and say "hey, give me a flag?" Not Ben--dude is sacked more times than I'd like to count. Yeah, maybe Brady pays the refs. Or maybe, just maybe, when the chips are down, the Steelers step up and find a way to win games.

Okay, I'll just say it--the truth is, I think many fans of other teams are jealous of the Steelers and their overall success. Jealous. We have a good owner that has done a ton of great things for this league--he's respected by his peers (and heck, even by the president). We have good coaches, good GMs and good players. If I was a fan of another team, I'd be jealous, too, and look for excuses as to why the Steelers are so successful. But hey, I'm just wearing my Terrible Towel Binders (which, by the way, 100% of the profits from the Towels go to charity).

  54. Deb says: November 16, 2009 11:07 AM

    @Majik Man ...

Oh, that's right. Our debate was over something even sillier than the Dugan call. Now I remember.

Please stop speaking for "everyone outside of Pittsburgh." For one, I'm outside of Pittsburgh. For another, most reasonable fans of other teams are not conspiracy theorists who believe the NFL is deliberately throwing games to Pittsburgh. Some whine about us and the Pats because we've been dominant in recent years. If the Bengals and the Vikes become dominant in the next decade, everyone will whine that THEY get all the breaks. That's what happens when you win. But if you actually buy the stuff you're spewing, you're in the minority.

Have the Steelers had bad calls go our way? You bet. Not all the calls you mention--certainly not the Holmes SB TD (the photographic evidence is pretty clear LOL). And I've seen photos showing Ben crossing the plane in the air in SBXL. But other calls? Sure. I'd be a fool to suggest otherwise. Have the Vikes? You bet. Have the other 30 teams? You bet. Have we all been robbed by bad calls? You bet. For us, the egregious Polamalu call in the 2005 Colts playoff game springs to mind. It's football. It happens. If you can't take it, find a new game.

But to dream up a BIG NFL CONSPIRACY to ensure the Steelers win is Just. Plain. Nuts. There have been 43 Super Bowls. We've won 6--that's 14 percent. We went 26 years without a Super Bowl win. We went 40 years without a playoff win. We didn't make the playoffs the year after our 2005 Super Bowl. At this stage, it looks like we'll be fortunate to make it this year.

You're not 12-years-old? Then please stop talking like a 12-year-old.

You love to argue nonsense for the sake of arguing, Majik Man. I have other responsibilities. Trying to sway you with logic is like trying to draw a survivalist out of his cave. Wasted energy. I'm done.

I'd love to be able to go to an article about Shannon Sharpe or any other unrelated subject without finding the same old "loud-mou[thed], obnoxious" whiners turning it into a diatribe about the Steelers "because it seems like you can't get away from them no matter how far away [from the subject] you go."

The Steelers, through winning and losing years, helped get me through a lot of tough times. I defend because I'm loyal.

If there is such strong visual evidence, as you claim, then why are the claims still being debated, and no, not just by me? In fact, the only people who claim to have "photographic" evidence are Steeler fans, I have yet to see a single photo of either call to put my mind at ease.

You're right though, our previous encounter was over something sillier than the Dugan call. It was about something that was in plain black and white, me directly quoting a post game interview, and you trying to tell me I was wrong.

And I guess I need to specify when dealing with the likes of a Steeler fan, I was referring to the Pittsburgh fan base, not the city itself. I'm guessing you actually understood this, but are trying to twist my words in an attempt to back up your feeble arguments.

    Majik ...

I have no idea what you are raving about now. My comment about the city was very specifically directed to "rarson," not you, goofball.

I did not question that the Vikes player made the comment nor that it appeared in black and white. I simply said I didn't believe an NFL official deliberately instructed an NFL player to walk over and lie to his coach about his helmet so he wouldn't have to flag a Steeler for pulling it off. That's pretty over the top. If anyone had taken that player's accusation seriously--including the reporters who printed it--we'd have heard more about it. I believe it was a miscommunication between player and ref. Joey Porter made accusations about refs throwing games in the heat of the moment after that Colts debacle. I LOVE Joey. But he was wrong. I know that because I have a level head on my shoulders. Wish you did.

If you haven't seen photos of Santonio's two-toe tap in XLIII, you haven't looked. The closeups were shown repeatedly during the game.

Below is a link to an air shot of Ben on that TD. To me, it looks like he broke the plane in the air. To you, it most certainly will not LOL But it's 50/50. I couldn't argue it either way--that's why they wouldn't overturn the call on the field. That's the rule--evidence has to be irrefutable to overturn. Bad call? Maybe. Was that score the difference in the game? Nope. And that wasn't a fourth-down play, either. If it had been overturned, we still had another scoring opportunity. Officiating conspiracy? Only to wackadoodles.

Now ... you continue to rave about all this because we beat the Vikes. You can't stand it. And you can't stand that I won't fold and agree that the game is fixed. Sorry. Don't believe in alien abduction or the Kenyan birth conspiracy, either. Now run along now and play somewhere else. I'm not answering you again.

This is your quote I was referring to...

Please stop speaking for "everyone outside of Pittsburgh." For one, I'm outside of Pittsburgh.

And, like I have said multiple times before, this is not about the Vikes game. The Vikes had plenty of chances to put that away, they just didn't. Did they get jobbed? Yes. Could they still have won? Absolutely.

I have felt this way since last year's playoff run and Super Bowl. The catch, which you claim there are tons of photos, yet you fail to link any, was a total joke (just like the TD against the Ravens). Not to mention Holmes ripping his helmet off on the field, right in front of the officials, which should have resulted in a flag, but it never found it's way out of the ref's pocket.

And your pic of Ben's "TD", pretty weak. You can't judge that from head on, that's why they have Sideline Judges standing right on the goal line.

I actually love the fact that you won't give in. It just bolsters my opinion of the typical Steeler homer. And I haven't said the game is fixed, just that the officials tend to lean in the direction of the Black and Gold. I also love that you bring up the years of non playoff appearances, and that's why you don't think they get help. It's not a full blown conspiracy, just a tendency to favor the Steelers, in my and many others' opinion. There was a time when I thought you may have been an anomoly, a level headed Steelr fan. That ship has sailed, you have joined the ranks of the rest of the Steel City dolts. Congrats.

    @Majik Man ...

Not responding to more lunacy ... but your name reminds me of the old song by Heart. Did you know that song is supposedly about Charles Manson?

So ... do you have a stable of bald women with Vikes horns carved into their foreheads ... who follow you about ... chanting your name ... tying up unsuspecting Steelers fans ... forcing them to listen to bizarre conspiracy theories ... not full-blown theories ... just itty-bitty ones where the NFL and its officials are only "leaning toward" being a little corrupt ... and when you've finally driven your victims stark-raving mad with your irrational ramblings and your work is done ... you scrawl "Steeler Pigs" all over the walls in red crayon ... then round up Tex and your girls and ride off into the night???

    Just wondering ......

Actually, it's a reference to Don Majkowski, please note the spelling before going on your next Turrets induced spewing of nonsense. I realize that common sense isn't your strong suit, but try to keep your rants at or above a 4th grade level, so they can match your observation skills.

Congratulations are in order I suppose, as you have managed to further the stereotype of the ignorant, rude Steeler fan by turning a civilized, adult conversation into an adolescent display of name calling. You are definitely entitled to your opinion, no matter how glaringly blinded it is. But to start comparing me to a serial killer because you run out of competent arguments is not only utterly ridiculous, but totally classless. However, I am not even really all that surprised, considering the source.

So, if you would like to civilly debate, I am more than happy to. But if you feel it necessary to act like a neglected teenager, I have no time for you. I refuse to engage in a gun fight in which the opposition is armed only with a water pistol.

    @Majik ...

Gee thank for the civil debate offer, but I'll just stick to the water pistol.

    Hey to the Family.

I know you think you're incredibly clever, but really, this is getting ridiculous. Not only are you posting this nonsensical garbage (which is not even remotely funny), but then you run back and tell your new PFT boyfriend about it on a 2 week old post that you're still talking on. Seriously, how sad and pathetic is your life? You claim to be sharp tongued, but you're about the single most dull witted human being I've come across on this site. You're not funny, your remarks aren't witty, and you're not even close to "showing up" this guy who is apparently a dh. Respond if you want, I doubt I'll be checking it again, as I've clearly mistaken you for someone intelligent that is fun to trade barbs with. Maybe you can use some real bullets in your 4th "parting shot", or perhaps a stake through my heart. Sad, just sad.

    @Majik ...

Hmmm ... following me about on PFT? Reading my messages on a two-week-old post that I'm still talking on. Seriously, how sad and pathetic is your life?

    Sad. Just sad.

    Hey to Tex.
