Orakpo thinks Vince Young will make it to Canton

Several months ago, Titans quarterback Vince Young declared that he'll eventually land in Canton.  In the Hall of Fame.  Without having to buy a ticket.

At the time, it was laughable.  Even now, with three straight wins after being inserted following a 6-0 start, the notion that Young eventually will compile Canton-worthy credentials seems even more far-fetched than the premise of V.  (But, yeah, I still watch it.)

But Young isn't the only one who envisions that he'll eventually have a shirtless tequila party at Fawcett Stadium.

Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo thinks Young will make it, too.

"He's a great quarterback and I'm glad that he got his opportunity again to go back and lead that team and you see what happens when you put a future Hall of Famer in the lineup," Orakpo told Sporting News Radio's The Monty Show

Our pal Monty, presumably after a spit take, asked Orakpo whether he truly believes his former Texas teammate is a Hall of Famer.

"Yeah, I mean I really believe that because when I played with him . . . this guy has so much passion and he won so many games for us," Orakpo said.  "It's the reason he got drafted so high because obviously he's got a lot of talent and he just needs his time to shine."

Based on what Young has done in the past three games, we're not ready to write him off.

Besides, we don't want to risk Titans owner Bud Adams giving us a double-barreled one-fingered salute for dissing his guy.

Orakpo has officially become a Redskin... opening his da*n mouth and looking like an idiot. Good work son, you made it 9 games.

I think Todd Marinovich will get into Canton one day too.............

Orakpo is just sticking up for a player he knows and play with in college. The talking head haters (you know who you are) have thrown Vince under the bus and Orakpo is attempting to steer the conversation in a more positive direction.

It is no different than Brady attempting to shield Belichick from the criticism (deservervidly so) being directed at Belichick for handing the Colts a victory last night.

6-0? I really hope you're just going on 2 hours of sleep, Florio.

There's one credential above all other credentials that decides how well you do in the NFL, especially at QB, and it's that "fire". Anybody who watched Vince at Texas, and particularly the National Championship, knows he's capable of burning at a high level. The pilot light just went out somewhere along the way.

If it's come back on, watch out. He's a freak of an athlete, and if he has an attitude to go with it, the sky is the limit for him. Seriously.

Are the Titans playing in the hall of fame game again next year?

I'll believe that Vince Young deserves to be in Canton the day a die hard OU fan says Vince Young deserves to be in Canton.

Oh good. Now that we've settled that by bringing in the expert.

I bet Orapko cheated off Vince on the Wonderlic.

chillax poodiks. He got asked if VY can make it to Canton, Did anyone really think he would say no?? ask any former longhorn if they think Young has what it takes and I dont think there would be many who'd say no. Wether the rest of the world agrees... whole nother story/a non story and no need to jump on Rack about sticking up for a former teammate.

The only way Vince Young ends up being inducted into the HOF is if he turns into some kind of Donovan McNabb, Carson Palmer, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning type player. He won't.

Kurt Warner has played in what, 3 Super Bowls, won one of them, yet he was benched/cut because he sucked. He was part of the Greatest Show on Turf offense. Yet there are people who debate whether he should be in the HOF because of the time where he sucked.

Vince Young hasn't been anywhere close to that, except for the getting benched part.

I think Orakpo made it to the liquor store before that interview, too.

"V" is a show you shouldn't mention Florio because it is not on NBC. It's at 8 P.M. eastern/7 P.M. central on Tuesdays, only on ABC.

So, Kerry Collins finally gets exposed-again-and the guy that was on suicide watch last summer is now on the bus to Canton? Seems a bit premature.

Vince will make it to Canton....polishing the bronze statues of REAL HOF QB's! I think Vince and Orakpo hit the bong one too many times at Texas.

  24. VoxVagina says: November 16, 2009 10:13 PM

    0-6, chief. Not 6-0

  25. bumkz says: November 16, 2009 10:24 PM

I think it will come down to a decision between Vince and Tavaris Jackson to see who gets in.

  26. ninjapleazee says: November 16, 2009 10:29 PM

wow.. 6-0 and Kerry Collins gets the bench... was Bellichick calling the plays on this one too?

  27. Matt says: November 16, 2009 10:59 PM

Christ, I went to sleep last night, and everything was normal ...

... I wake up today, and I'm in this warped universe where the Titans started the year off 6-0? What's next, a Browns-Lions matchup for the Super Bowl?

  28. Vikefanman says: November 16, 2009 11:11 PM

It could happen....Canton needs cab drivers too.

  30. houskat says: November 16, 2009 11:48 PM

i'am sure he'll make it to canton also ...just not as a hall of famer......just about like their 6-0 start...lol

  31. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: November 17, 2009 12:11 AM

The only way Young makes it to Canton is in a cab and the only way he enters is if he pays admission.

  32. VonClausewitz says: November 17, 2009 12:20 AM

LOL @ Cubano. I'm pretty sure Ho Lee Chow is better.

  33. NashvilleSeahawk says: November 17, 2009 12:22 AM

Young in Canton? What, working the grounds? Don't you have to be able to speak English in order to work for the HOF grounds crew?

I'm not sure he is smart enough to run the lawn mower either.

  34. Canyonero says: November 17, 2009 1:18 AM

If a guy can get into the HOF based on what he did in college, Vince Young is a shoo-in. But that's not how it works.

He lost his fire to win when he joined the pros. No body makes the HOF simply by being an amazing athlete.

  35. Quagmire says: November 17, 2009 9:00 AM

"Based on what Young has done in the past three games, we're not ready to write him off.

For the past 3 games he's averaging 170 yds per game, with 2 tds, 2 ints & 2 fumbles.
For his career he's averaging 144 yds per game with 24 tds, 34 ints & 25 fumbles.

Not JaMarcus Russell horrible...but I think you can write him off.

As far as VY's record goes, he is a winner. If Joe Namath can make it to the NFL HOF with his garbage stats and semi-decent record, I don't see why VY couldn't make it, especially if he continues to win games. I think that a super bowl win would be mandatory unless he starts to put up Manning/Brady/Brees numbers and does so for an extended period of time.

Unfortunately, though VY has the passion of Philip Rivers, I am not sure he puts in the preparation to be a quarterback we mention in the top 10 in the league currently. If he does make it to the HOF it will be a sneak. A last ballot attempt, hail-mary, or take off running last resort because Manning/Brees/Brady/Favre have all retired and we haven't seen anything close to that for awhile so the standard once set for QBs will be reduced.

I ran the numbers when someone pointed out "Vince Young is a winner" before. The only reason he has a good winning percentage is because he plays a LOT of bad teams. The VAST majority of his wins have come against teams that finished under .500 (a trend that isn't going to be wildly upset by the past 3 weeks).

As for Joe Namath, his stats weren't garbage. While he did wash up around 1974, before that he was only below league average in QB Rating in 1970 (when he made only 5 starts). Generally he was about 10 points higher than the league average. That is roughly 16% better than average. Or, by today's standards (where a QB rating around 80 is average as opposed to 60), it would mean he would have a QB rating usually around 93 by today's standards. You can't just compare numbers across generations because the game is different.
