Phillips: Cowboys relied too much on Romo's arm

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo dropped back to pass 44 times in Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. He handed off 11 times.

Looking back on the game, Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says he doesn’t want to see such an imbalance between passing and running again.

We still want to play balanced,” Phillips said, per Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com. “If we can run the ball, we want to be able to control the ball more. It’d help the defense, if nothing else.”

It’d also make life more difficult for the opposing defense, as Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers made clear in his post-game comments. Asked why the defense was able to shut the Cowboys out until a garbage time touchdown, Capers said the Cowboys’ lack of balance made life easy for his unit.

“We were able to pressure more [Sunday] because the game became one-dimensional,” said Capers. “You can just go out and blitz, but if people are going to run the ball for big yardage on you you’re foolish. We had some run pressures, they worked decently and it opened up more of our pass pressures.”

It’s not clear why the Cowboys allowed the game to become so one-dimensional: Usually teams don’t abandon the run unless they fall way behind, but the Cowboys abandoned the run even though they were tied 0-0 for half of the game and were only down 3-0 at the start of the fourth quarter. Whatever the reasons for the Cowboys’ pass-happy play calling, Phillips says it can’t happen again.

Traditionally, only the Cowboys fan base is unballanced. As we shall see in the following posts from Hap, Chapnasty and Vox (if his Mommy gives him back his computer privileges).

Vindication Florio? After all the verbal diarrhea spewed at you following your prediction of a Green Bay victory by the blinded faithful of big D what do you do? I’m thinking that tonight is schnapps night at the Florio abode!

“Uhmmm, yea, I’m just the head coach, I wasn’t actually coaching the game you know, I don’t wanna see that happen again”
You fat tub of moron, I would fire you on the spot for even hinting that it wasn’t your responsibility.
And being able to stop a team on 3rd and a thousand would be nice, too, defensive head coach.

Red Headed Jesus always panics and abandons the run if they’re down even by 3 points.

  7. dakotah says: Nov 16, 2009 4:40 PM

Good to hear Wade is saying this. It would be even better to hear that he had broken Jason Garrett’s jaw.

  8. leatherneck says: Nov 16, 2009 4:47 PM

The Cowboys threw that game away. If they don’t run the ball, they don’t win. Period.

  9. WhySoSerious says: Nov 16, 2009 4:49 PM

He needs to be more involved during the game, not just in press conferences.
Oh yeah, heads up, ESPN has a story up on the blown calls by the refs. Look it up, post it. Its not a negative Cowboys story I know, so you might have trouble getting Florio to approve it.

Oh, wow, Dallas is having some troubles with play calling?
And to think, they could have hired Sherm Lewis just a few short weeks ago. Too late now, Cowpies, sorry. ;-)

The Dallas Cowboys haters all say that Wade is not the real coach,so it is not his fault, it’s Jerry’s,

  12. braczey29 says: Nov 16, 2009 4:54 PM

om…the answer is the Cowboys o-line got injured ….. a lot last night as game progressed and running the ball became an issue
Choice should be featured in the offense, Barber can do goal line and fourth qtr pommeling duties
but Garrett is another ivy league moron who got paid a lot of $$ for…..???…… being an okay number 2?? Well, that kind of sounds like Roy E Williams story too, thanx Jerry!!

  13. rjgreen3 says: Nov 16, 2009 4:55 PM

Hey Jason, Thanks for not taking The Ravens job! Always thought you were overrated. One thing is for certain and two things for sure the only owners who may hire you now are named Davis or Lerner!

  14. isuhuskie says: Nov 16, 2009 5:01 PM

I can’t believe this is a coincidence… Roy E. Williams complains about not getting the ball – They start throwing him the ball – And the offense which had been thriving, starts sputtering.
Meanwhile, the WR who had provided them a spark goes into the 4th QTR, two weeks in a row, with zero catches. How can they go two weeks in a row and not find Austin until the 4th QTR?

  15. chapnasty says: Nov 16, 2009 5:07 PM

It is painfully obvious why they let it become one dimensional, Jason Garrett is an over rated bum of a coach. Sickening to have your starting RB get 20 yards on 2 carries on the opening drive and then not run him again. Pathetic and embarassing to be a cowboys fan today. Now I know how Philly fans feel every week

  16. Patrian says: Nov 16, 2009 5:12 PM

Jason Garret AGAIN opts to THROW the ball at the 4 yard line on a 1st and goal instead of RUNNING and AGAIN we get an interception..
Someone needs to tell this idiot that at the under the 5 yard line the defense doesn’t have much field to cover on a throw…

  17. Tikkanen says: Nov 16, 2009 5:12 PM

This is what happens when owner Jerry Jones is the true head coach. Wade is merely the defensive coordinator, and has no control over Jason Garrett, the offensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting as deemed by Jerry.

  18. JimmySmith says: Nov 16, 2009 5:12 PM

If it weren’t for that bald headed moron in Minnesota, Wade Phillips might be the biggest dumbass head coach in the NFL. If Vox is any indication, they already have the biggest dumbasses for fans.

  19. purpleguy says: Nov 16, 2009 5:14 PM

Both coaches were auditioning for their head coaching replacements next year, and it looks like Wade’s audition went better.

You forgot me, ass face. Unbalanced fans? This coming from fans that are historically known to throw batteries, and pelted santa claus with snowballs.
Say what you want, but Oakland slapped Mnoob, D-Jackoff, and Craplin upside their collective faces, and then Dallas did it again in Philly’s own house.
And the best part is, nothing you respond with will change those facts :)

  22. TRAMO says: Nov 16, 2009 5:24 PM

Good coaching, unlike phillips and Garrett would have had the offense prepared for this type defense,it reminded me of the Raven game last year when the offense appeared to be lost. ALSO we could have had capers coaching our defense if it hadn’t been politicly incorrect to hurt stewarts feelings. We will never have a super bowl team as long as jerry has a yesman as coach.

  23. TRAMO says: Nov 16, 2009 5:26 PM

Even some of Landry’s worst teams were never that impotent on offense.

  24. 1stngoal says: Nov 16, 2009 5:44 PM

I must agree. I thought going into this game that Dallas would win by giving the Packers defense a steady diet of Barber/Jones/Choice. It looks like Dallas needs regime change as well as my Packers.

  25. Bob Nelson says: Nov 16, 2009 5:58 PM

Bill Parcels is the only coach in the history of the Cowboys not to be fired by Jerry Jones.
That Packer defense when properly used can cause a lot of turnovers. They are 4th overall and 4th best rushing defense. 4th in INT’s. But have slipped to 8th in passes defensed as so many passes are thrown away or are wildly inaccurate. 6th in Passer rating given up.
The Packers deserve the credit for being a good football team.

One feeble attempt was Romo’s fault. He overthrew Austin in the first qtr for what might have been a TD…

  29. bluestree says: Nov 16, 2009 6:30 PM

Seems like the Cowboys coaches know that in a situation like yesterday (close, defensive game, blitzing on early downs) you’ve got to run the ball. I don’t think they believed they could run. Except for the Bengal game, the Packers have played well against the run. Injuries? Does Dallas not believe in it’s run game? I just get the feeling Wade is doing some finger pointing here. Would they dump their offensive game plan in the second quarter without telling Wade? They were calling plays on down and distance and IMHO they wanted to throw the ball and be “explosive” on offense. Is Wade throwing Garrett under the bus when it blows up in their faces?

  30. Patrian says: Nov 16, 2009 6:38 PM

Is Wade throwing Garrett under the bus when it blows up in their faces?
    —————————————
Not really. Everyone knows Garret is calling the plays. Problem is, he has shown a tendancy to rely too much on the pass instead of his very capable RB behind the very capable O-line.
Phillips needs to be listening in on Garrets calls to Romo and he needs to every now and then, override when Garret forgets when it’s time to throw and when it’s time to run (i.e. 1st and goal at 4 yard line).

Your buh-hind is long gone before the lights go out in Cowboys Stadium at the end of the year. Start updating your resume

Wade Phillips is doing a good job. He may not be the best in the NFL but the Cowboys are still 6 and 3 and there is still alot more football to play. There are many teams out there right now that are only 1 and 8 and 2 and 7. Wade is doing fine and the Cowboys are still in the running for the playoffs.
