Broncos fans didn't realize how good they had it with Kyle Orton until he was knocked out of Sunday's loss to the Redskins at halftime. Chris Simms replaced him and struggled badly.
According NFL Network's Mike Lombardi, Denver won't have to watch Simms behind center again this week, at least not to start the game.
Lombardi reports that Orton will start against San Diego despite his injured ankle. Publicly, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said Monday that Kyle Orton is questionable for the AFC West showdown.
Judging by Denver's policy towards injury disclosure, it would not be surprising if Orton's status was still in some doubt much later in the week.

AWESOME...Now wheres the Vikings/Lions Aftermath? Pride not allowing it?
Doesnt matter either way, broncos will lose. "They are who we thought they were"
Donko fans better pray that Orton starts and not Simms. Is there a more painful QB to watch in the NFL than Simms? Uh, never mind. I forgot about Jamarcus Russell.
Can't believe I am saying
"YES, Kyle Orton is gonna start for my Bronco's this week!"
Wow.
We beat the Skins if just throws that ball away instead of "scrambling", I've seen him try to "run", a few times, any time he does he seems to get injured!
Might not be as bad as it seems for Denver fans. I wouldn't be as concerned about Simms starting if he gets all the first team reps this week. Don''t forget that Kevin Kolb performed a lot better when he knew he would start than when he was thrown into the game unexpectedly.
Daniel Laruso's gonna fight? Daniel Laruso's gonna fight, ladies and gentlemen!
triumphant
Only the real Kevin Kolb would say that!
Outted as another reader and now commenter, Kevin Kolb.
People seem to forget about the beginning of last year. Orton tore it up for the Bears in the first month-plus; then he got injured. It is essentially the same injury this time around and after getting hurt last year he played well enough to be merely a footnote in the Cutler trade.
All I'm saying is I think that Cutler/Orton swap might start looking better for Bear fans if Orton responds to this injury like he did last year (and if Cutler starts throwing a few less to the opponent).
broncos had a whooping 36 yards of total offense after orton got hurt...so yea they better hope he can play. Simms wouldnt be in the league if he had any other last name....
Twice in Orton's career did he suffer an injury, come back, and play pathetically possibly proving he can't play through pain. This may be the 3rd time. The Broncos are reeling, and badly need a win, putting more weight on Orton's shoulder, or should I say, his ankle.
They need to trade for Tarvaris Jackson for a 1st round pick...
seems like a smart move
broncos better hope he plays better than he did for the bears after he got hurt last year.let's see 3 in a row and counting starting to look familar bronco fans?only this time you don't have cutler to blame do you?oh wait it was only his fault after he got traded right?yea that's when he became a overrated crybaby once he wasn't playing for you anymore.emoy the rest of your season broncos!
Ya, um, we'll just keep our first round pick and you purple guys can keep your (first round worthy?) T-Jack. Thank you and have a nice day.
first time the kid played an actual nfl regualr season half in about 4 years i believe. cut him some slack
Cygnus X :
nice to see you can copy & paste so you can repeat the same ravings i saw earlier today...& the same drivel all weekend
i'll take 6-3 right now...the Broncos are not one of the top teams this year despite power rankings BS & bandwagon hopping
Orton has played well this year & though i think Cutler is going to be a great QB in the future Orton made some throws yesterday that Jay needs to learn...besides the 2 TD's to Marshall he knows when to throw the ball away & move on to the next play
glad you are so hyped on 3 losses in a row..did you notice the Bears have dropped 4 of 5? they are on a nice roll there too & thanks for the draft pick next April
Don't worry Broncos fans, the Chargers are the epitome of inconsistency. They are not a very good team and their O line gives up a TON of sacks. Even if they win on Sunday, the Chargers will find a way to blow it.
Chargers only play well when they are behind in the AFC West, as soon as they get up or get a lead they always seem to mail it in. NORV TURNER IS A JOKE!
simms has always blown chunks. he was only half decent when cadillac was new in tampa.
not to mention the tattoos and the crying in the huddle.
Dear DanSnyder,
Your a tool. I guarantee the Broncos Aren"t who you thought they where. Who predicted them to be at 6-3, you? I didn't think so.
The chargers are the most over rated team in the NFL, and it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't over react like fools every time they make a decent play.
I would hate to be a Charger fan, for they never have lived up to the hype. (San Diego is an awsome city.)
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!
Hmm lets see, The key to any team is their lines and the anchor of both the Chargers offensive and defensive lines (Pro Bowlers Nick Hardwick and Jamal Williams) are hurt and not playing. Plus L.T. got hurt in the opener and is just now getting 100% healthy. Same with Merriman. The Chargers are adapting and finding ways to win while they are getting healthy and they now have a realistic shot at a 13-3 season after starting 2-3. The Bolts may not be the best team in the league but I bet no team wants to face them right now. San Diego and Denver are heading in different directions and it will show on Sunday.
Be honest, you sit around for 3.5 years as a QB and do better than Simms.
So the Chargers are
"not a very good team and their
O line gives up a TON of sacks" ?
Is 20 a ton?
(Favre has 19, Romo 22, Big Ben: 27)
If the Chargers, having overcome massive
injuries to go 4-0 in the last month
(while the Broncos faded 0-3 including being
blown out by the Ravens & Steelers, and
an embarrassing loss to the Redskins)
are "not a very good team" right now,
then what phrase would describe Denver?
"Horrific" ? "Pathetic" ?

A big game with a lot on the line = Chargers lose.
