Last word on the Belichick decision

I’ve got a new toy.

Last week, one of the guys from NBCSports.com came to West Virginia to install a portable studio for doing real-time video with the folks in Stamford, Connecticut (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap).

Today, we tried it out for the first time.  (OK, actually Florio Jr. and I tried it out the other night, re-enacting the”fat guy in a little coat” scene.)

Here’s the result.  No coats were ripped in the filming of this segment.

And to think I spend a majority of my day giving these 2 nerds attention. I have never seen 2 bigger dorks in my life… doesn’t mean i dont love em, but i guarantee they spent a good amount of time in highschool watching the friday night games hung high atop the field from the flagpole… tighty whiteys and all.

    Observations:
    a. the volume is not very loud.
    b. Gregg is a twelve year old dweeb! This explains a lot.

Finally someone talks about how BB put total faith into his defense. Manning has struggled against the Patriots plenty of times, and even during that game last night. I feel BB thought that even if he didnt get the first down, he could trust his defense not to allow a TD

  11. Deb says: Nov 17, 2009 5:57 PM

Gregg actually thought going for it on 4th and 2 from their own 28, when they were leading, was a good idea at the time? Really? Wow.
Good coach. Bad decision. Nice toy.

Florio: either your camera is crooked or the background behind you is not level. Either way, the NBC Sports logos look slanted.

You promise this will be the last word on the Belichick decision.
Wheres all the criticism from when Belichick did almost the identical same play on 4 and 3 around the 28 yard line I believe against the Falcons with little time left in the game, O wait they made that so he’s a genius in that game, but wrong with the game against the Colts.

  15. wintertonka says: Nov 17, 2009 6:09 PM

Can’t NBC afford a better microphone for you, Florio?

  16. Twiz says: Nov 17, 2009 6:16 PM

This is all just stupid. Had the play worked, every single person (including Lord Florio) would have saying what a great coach Belichick is.
My guess is that the ONLY reason this is still being talked about here (and no where else) is because it was a Sunday night game.

  17. Marv_Sleezy says: Nov 17, 2009 6:17 PM

The sound quality on Flo’s end was poor – Its not professional quality by a long shot, why did they need NBC to do it for him, its just a crappy webcam. Just call the geek squad at your local big box store if you dont know how to instal a webcam.

  19. Bob S. says: Nov 17, 2009 6:30 PM

You don’t go for it on your on 28 on 4th and 2 with a 6 point lead and what should have been under 2 minutes left in game with the other team having or supposed to have zero timeouts left IF you hadnt been ignorant enough to use up 2 of your own timeouts and stop the clock with incomplete passes.PERIOD!END OF STORY! NEVER!
This was sheer lunacy and belichick and brady got exactly what they deserved! a loss for a game the team had won by 6 points for the 1st 58 minutes.

  20. Cleric John Preston says: Nov 17, 2009 6:36 PM

    Ufanforreal:
The falcons decision is totally different
    1) Its the Atlanta Falcons
    2) its not for the game. Even if the Patriots turn it over in that game, AND Atlanta scores a TD, there more than a quarter to play your way out of the hole you’ve dug
Its the context of the move that makes it teh worst call ever.
    1) Manning threw 2 picks and was pressured enough that game AND his receivers dropped enough to think that punting the ball is a better decision than going for it.
    2) going for it after you FAILED to convert 3rd and 2 is just stupid. What makes anyone think the 4th down attempt will be more successful?
    3) the play should go to Welker or Moss, NOT Kevin friggin faulk
    4) giving your defense 70 yards to defend against an offense with 50 seconds left is a lot different that 30 yards. The pretense that the yardage doesn’t matter is STUPID. If it didn’t, why does anyone EVER punt?
    5) you went for it AFTER a Timeout that game teh defense time to remind everyone that the play was for the game, and to ONLY defend those 2 yards
    6) it was away. The crowd is with the colts on defense of that 4th and 2.
Overall, its a sh1t decision. Everyone needs to get off the Patrtiots jocks and see Bellicheck was just being an arrogant douche.

  21. Brewster says: Nov 17, 2009 6:54 PM

NBC can send someone to West virginia to set up a crappy webcam for you and no one at NBC can find time to fix the sign in problem?
    That’s pretty disgusting.

Dude, don’t you wish you could go back in time and NOT type this?
Kevin Faulk has forever been money on 3rd (or 4th) down. And in case you didn’t notice, he converted on the play in question as well. Patriots got reamed for once instead of doing the reaming.
Live by the ream, die by the ream.

Oh yeah, Florio looks like an emaciated version of Peter North.

  25. tdonegan says: Nov 17, 2009 8:04 PM

I’m sure the guys at NBC have already figured these out but it looks like you need to set the tripod more level (or adjust the screen behind you) and it sounds like the camera was set to output the shotgun mic rather than the lav mic you’re wearing.

  26. Slow Joe says: Nov 17, 2009 8:25 PM

Never say never, man, You take every situation one at a time. I loved the call. But they didn’t make it. The game was still in doubt and he had a chance to win it right then and there. That’s a coach players love to play for.

Kevin fualk really blew this one, if he could have just cuaght it they woul have the first down. Maybe they shouldn’t have run a stupid play that was even CLOSE to the first down marker why not theow 5 yards pass the line.
Atlanta game was different it was the 3rd quarter and they did it on the fly so they had a little momentum going with it as opposed to calling a time out to give the colts plenty of time to set up.

  29. E-dog says: Nov 17, 2009 8:51 PM

Check out the analysis here: http://www.advancednflstats.com/2009/11/belichicks-4th-down-decision-vs-colts.html. According to the math, going for it was the decision with the best odds of success.
Aside from that, why wouldn’t Belichick feel confident that his offense could get two yards? And Kevin Faulk is a stud in the clutch, so don’t bash him. I think the bottom line is that coach Belichick made the right decision, the team just failed to execute on the field.

Let’s suppose the following scenarios of up 6 pts and 4th and 2:
    1. Pats are on their own 35 – going for it makes sense though a 52 yarder to ice it might make more sense.
    2. Pats are on their own 45 – tough call – taking a delay of game an punting is probably the call from 99% of the coaches.
    3. Pats are at the Colts 20 – is BB going to go for that?
    4. It’s the Superbowl – do you go for it then?
Any other coach goes for it like BB did in that situation and he’d be out of a job by Monday morning.
In the NFL, arguably the premier league in pro sports: you don’t run up the score like he did throughout 2007; you don’t video tape signals; and, you don’t go for it up 6 pts on your opponents 28!
He is an arrogant genius who has zero respect for the league.

Yeah, well, he’s Bill friggin’ Belichick, so he gets the benefit of the doubt.

The ol’ unwritten “don’t run up the score” rule.
Yet vs. the Colts, the Pats were up 13 and came from ahead to lose. So…maybe thats why you should, ahem, “run up the score”? Not to mention these are paid professionals we’re talking about. Sorry *your* feelings got hurt, but football isn’t about feelings (other than the sackless losers who pollute PFT with their “cheaters who run up the score” talk).
“He is an arrogant genius who has zero respect for the league.”
    ^^^^^
My guess is that he does have respect for the league…why, you ask? When your precious Eric Mangini tattled taled to the league about Patriots gamesmanship, you better damn well believe that Belichick had dirt on the Jesters and just about every other team in the league.
But, he fell on the sword for 32 teams, didn’t point any fingers and didn’t attempt to destroy anyone elses career as assclowns like Mangina and Tony Dungy tried to do to him.

This is stupid. The Patriots choked that game. I’m hearing the media day after day talking about this 4th and 2 crap and how the Patriots dominated the Colts in every way and lost the game on a 4th and 2. This is so retarded. I think Belichek was the only one who actually WATCHED the game, realized from the get go that Mannings numbers would have been better and the Colts offensive production would have been better if Addai, Collie and Garcon can catch passes 20 yards or more in Patriots territory. I mean the ball was bouncing off thier hands, it wasn’t like they weren’t open, wide open dropping the ball. It was just a matter of time given the opportunities and the law of averages that Wayne would eventually get open and ONE of those recievers would eventually make a play or two because they were getting open ALL NIGHT dropping passes. WATCH THE GAME TONIGHT PEOPLE. This is one of those games where you DONT look at the stats and say ” man defense held them all night, why didn’t Belichek punt” They could have scored from the 30 in 20 seconds if they wanted to with timeouts and 1:57 left, what the hell is another 40 yards going to do with that much time left?
