Vikings' Rice named NFC offensive player of the week

On Sunday Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice had the best game of his career, totaling 201 receiving yards in a win over the Detroit Lions.

Today it was announced that Rice has been named NFC offensive player of the week for his efforts.

The game against the Lions — and today’s award — is the latest demonstration of what a big-play receiver Rice is becoming in his third year in the league. In his first two NFL seasons, Rice had a total of 537 receiving yards; he’s topped that in just his last four games, with a combined 553 yards in a four-game stretch against the Ravens, Steelers, Packers and Lions.

On Sunday Rice got open deep against the Lions’ secondary all day, catching seven passes along the way. According to the advanced stats at FootballOutsiders.com, Rice was the week’s second-most productive receiver, behind only the Colts’ Reggie Wayne.

This is the fifth time in 2009 the Vikings have had an NFC offensive player of the week: Kick returner Percy Harvin has a special teams player of the week award, linebacker Chad Greenway has a defensive player of the week award, and quarterback Brett Favre has two offensive player of the week awards.

Well deserving. The guy is emerging as a great WR. and as a Viking fan, I look forward to many more great seasons with Sid the Kid.

Sidney Rice definitely deserves it for the raw numbers. The Lions weren’t putting up the best competition, though.
As for Charlie Woodson, has anyone else seen his stat line from the Cowboys game? I’m a Vikings fan and I don’t like the Packers. That said, Woodson had a monster game–even for him. He just took over the game. 8 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack for a loss of 12 yards, 2 forced fumbles, 1 pass knocked down, 1 interception. Uh, that’s good.

I’m waiting for the Viking fan to step up and say that Sidney Rice is better than the following: Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, Roddy White, Reggie Wayne, Greg Jennings, Brandon Marshall, Chad Ochocinco, Hines Ward, Steve Smith and Larry Fitzgerald or any combinaiton of the above. Then I’m waitng for them to say Sidney would have better numbers if everyone wasn’t stacking eight on the box against Farve.

  23. Why Isn't Jackson Starting? says: Nov 17, 2009 10:02 PM

Well he was a rookie in 2007 and combine that with the fact he got hurt and missed the last 2 games. Last season he caught a TD week 1 from T-Jack and injured his knee and didn’t play from week 2 to 9. Then he came back but admitted himself several times he never fully recovered.
I’d bet the farm several times over that when Favre is gone, Rice will still be a superstar.
But go ahead and give Brett all the credit, I’m sure he’d have no objection to it.

  24. Fan_Of_ Four says: Nov 17, 2009 10:02 PM

Favre made Greg Jennings a star and now it’s Sidney Rice’s turn. Think it doesn’t matter who’s throwing the ball just look at Jennings numbers since Favre left.

  25. cusoman says: Nov 17, 2009 10:13 PM

    @Hatethepats
You have incredibly inept officials, that’s how.
Rice would have had a touchdown if the same officiating team who missed the clear-as-day Peterson horsecollar tackle wouldn’t have mistakenly called Rice down on his 56 yard catch at the DET 3 yd line. He was never touched and that should have been a TD.

  26. Twiz says: Nov 17, 2009 10:23 PM

So many non Vikings fans proclaimed so much at the beginning of the season…….Farve won’t last….Favre will throw constant interceptions……Childress will get fired…….
I want to ask all of you to keep up the hatred. It has gotten the Vikes to 8-1, and if you keep it up, you might just help the Vikes win their first Super Bowl.

Jennings’ numbers since Favre left….118 receptions for 1835 yards and 12 touchdowns. ….Hmm doesn’t seem that bad to me.
Favre helped make Jennings a star but Jennings was still able to put up some big numbers even without Favre there. So quite acting like Jennings hasn’t been that good since Favre left because that isn’t even close to being the case. He had a Pro Bowl type of year last year.
As for Rice, I think he is having a fantastic season but I would like to see what he does without Favre throwing him the ball.

  30. bustabloodvessel says: Nov 17, 2009 11:01 PM

to everyone who thinks his numbers are only because of Favre, look at all the other receivers in the league. Generally speaking, it usually takes 3 to 5 years for them to make a true impact, it typically takes that long to learn all the little nuances of playing that position in the NFL. Sid is in his 3rd year, and if you account for injuries, he has only play about a season and a half. Reggie Wayne didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard until about year 3 with Manning, and and he is considered to be one of the best in the game. Sure he is benifiting from Farve, but the kid has MAD skills. Comparing him with any other player is like apples to oranges, they all bring something different to the game. Rice doesn’t have great speed, but he has good hands, runs great routes, and is a huge target. Tons of talent and potential, and the kid deserves the credit.

    2006 – 45 receptions, 632 yards
    2007 – 53 receptions, 920 yards
    Rodgers only season:
    2008 – 80 receptions, 1292 yards

    53 grabs – 920 yards in 2007 (Favre)
    80 grabs – 1292 in 2008 (Rodgers)

Oh, I know, you’re expecting the same sort of distorted perspective the Packers fans use when evaluating their quarterback. You know the one – Aaron Rodgers is a top five QB, despite having Brady, Peyton, Brees, Big Ben, Rivers, McNabb, Eli, Warner, Romo & Palmer in the league. Not to mention other guys who have put up numbers like Cassel, Schaub, Cutler, or youngsters like Flacco & Ryan.
Maybe someday Rodgers will prove himself to be a top five QB, and the again, maybe Rice does the same at WR.

Chris – as you know, Florio only posts for one side of a rivalry to antagonize the other side and generate more web hits, page refreshes, Sprint ads, whatever.
Although, I am still stunned that the Vikings-Lions aftermath was posted so late in the day on Monday – considering how many Vikings/Packers fans and Vikings bandwagon jumpers like to chime in.
As you know, I equate Vikings bandwagon jumpers to Pack fans who blame Favre for the rift between him and the team. I’m happy that Favre is succeeding, but I still believe he should be retiring in Spring, 2011, as a Packer. The Aaron Rodgers’ drafting was the final nail in the coffin for Favre – replacement QB 3 years too soon.

  43. Ambrose says: Nov 18, 2009 9:12 AM

Rice, at this point in time, is simply a wide receiver that is benefitting from having Brett Favre throw to him. Favre has made many wide receivers look like they were all-pro (just ask him!) Rice demonstrates (to Favre) a certain cadence and flow that he (Favre) likes, which works out well for both of them. Without Favre, Rice goes right back to where he used to be. He should be polishing Favre’s shoes for the rest of his career, just like Javon should have done.

  44. PervyHarvin says: Nov 18, 2009 9:29 AM

“He’s a monster,” Fitzgerald said, high praise from perhaps the best receiver in the game today.
“Sidney possesses all of the natural ability,” Fitzgerald said. “It definitely helps having Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson with him, but he’s so gifted. His potential is off the charts. It was just a matter of time until he has the confidence. He’s playing with a lot of confidence now – you see what he did (Sunday). And I’m happy to see it.”
I’ve never had a guy like Sidney who can make those types of plays,” Favre said. “It’s a luxury.”
…better than anything I could say. Eat it haters!

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
He deserved it this week. However, no GB player will ever get Defensive POW or Offensive POW honors when they play the Vikings.
Brett Favre on the other hand has won Offensive POW honors twice this year already, and both just happened to come at the expense of the PackQueers. Enough said.

  46. purpleguy says: Nov 18, 2009 11:04 AM

I like the point above about players of the week typically coming out of games against the bottom feeders — that’s probably true. It’s also true that Rice’s success this year is due to Favre, recovery from injuries, an improved line, and the other weapons around him. Who cares? I’ll take the results.
Woodson deserves defensive player of the week too. He’s been about the only consistently good player on that team this year.

  47. cusoman says: Nov 18, 2009 11:15 AM

    Make up your minds!

  48. Ambrose says: Nov 18, 2009 12:33 PM

Favre is playing much better than I had expected him to, I admit that. But who have the Vikings played? The toughest wins they have were both against Green Bay. Lions twice. Rams. Baltimore, which should have won. San Francisco, which should have won. Browns. And a loss to the only other tough game they have had. Whoop dee freakin’ doo. Green Bay has played tougher teams (Bengals, Cowboys, always tough inter-divisional Chicago, Vikings twice.) The Packers played poorly in the first half of each of their games against the Vikings and played great the second half each time. They may not be as good as the Vikings, but they won’t lose a third time. Be careful what you wish for. Arrogant idiots.

  49. Ambrose says: Nov 18, 2009 12:42 PM

I want to add that with the exception of one game (and it hurt,) the Packer have beaten their weaker and similar opponents just as handily as the Vikings have. I want nothing more than the Packers to earn a wildcard spot and take it to the Vikings a third time, if the Vikings are still in it by then. Beating an NFL team three times in one season is hard to do. Don’t go beating your chests just yet….the Vikings haven’t beaten anybody yet (the Packers are crap right (?), so they don’t count.) And their weak-ass schedule has only created a lead bar painted gold….Wake up already. I smell first round elimination.

You actually think Favre could stand the hits that Rodgers is getting? And still produce like Rodgers is? Please. Take off the purple glasses and put down the purple kool-aid. LOL I doubt it. Rodgers leadership skills, very important to be a qb, are no better than T. Jacks.AD would have to run the huddle. Favre’s football IQ is miles ahead of Mr. Rodgers also.

  56. bustabloodvessel says: Nov 18, 2009 2:18 PM

    Ambrose,
Rodgers is the only QB in the league dumb enough to take that many hits. Hell, half of them are his fault for not getting rid of the ball. If he is such a great QB, why the hell doesn’t he know who and where the “hot” receiver is going to be? Sounds to me like you are the one wearing glasses and drinking kool-aid. You’re just mad your kool-aid is piss flavored.
    LBPACKFAN,
I will give you the missed kick, but do you have any idea what a hail mary pass is? I’ll give you a clue, it isn’t thrown on a rope from the 30. I am not a Favre lover, but the guy made a great throw. He did what is called “throwing the receiver open”, something your great QB has yet to learn to do.
I really do feel sorry for you guys. You really shouldn’t post on here if you don’t know anything about football. It makes you look like a jackass!!

  57. Ambrose says: Nov 18, 2009 2:50 PM

Pervy…I believe you are correct when you say that Favre orchestrated his own way out of GB when he was not getting the players he wanted for “his” team. He dragged out his decsions every year just to see what actions the GB management might take, before he committed. Very selfish behavior. Reminds me of when Elway refused to play for Indianaoplis or Eli whining his way onto the Giants. Hard to feel sorry for self-centered egomaniacs. If he truly wanted to be the QB in GB, he would be. I believe that to be true. He wanted out when he didn’t get his way. And yes, the Packers have problems. All the more reason that Rodgers should be getting the credit he deserves. And he is too young to have the experience that Favre has. And yes, the long term prospects of a team with the surrounding talent the Vikings have, would be a lot more formidable if Rodgers were their QB. I am glad we have him for the next five to ten years. Do you think Favre will be playing in 2017? This makes it all the more important that the Vikings will fail if they do not win the SuperBowl this year. They have to win it. Thye have placed all their cards on the table. Anything less is a failure and you guys (you and your buddy Chickenfoot) know it. By the way, Chickenfoot has an unhealthy fascination with homosexual innuendo. I would be careful “backing up” anything he has to say. @ Ambrose – Saying anything less than a SuperBowl win is failure for the Vikings is the most dumb shit take I have ever heard(though other Pack guys have said it) That should go for every team don’t you think? Oh wait, I see. A wild card birth is like the SuperBowl to the Packers, forgive me. We are a Young team, don’t count on us being shit after Favre is gone. AD,Rice,Harvin, Allen,Loadholt,Sullivan etc etc
I’ll back Chickenfoot anytime. You see, unlike you Packers and Pack fans, we are team mates. Seen more Pack guys fighting each other on here. It is funny and pathetic!

Going forward you won’t be able to keep this team together…too expensive. The Vikings are all-in..right now. This is it. It isn’t the same for “every team.” Not every team ramped up like the Vikings did. The Vikings need to win the SB in order to get their much-desired stadium (or keep their coach.) If they don’t, they fail. Everyone but Viking fans will agree with me. You don’t make the moves they made without severe expectations, and “good enough” is not good enough…not this year.

Keep their coach huh? His signing a new deal is imminent. check the story ON THIS SITE.
    You are a tool.
The Vikes have the best capologist in the NFL, they will have no problems keeping their core talent intact.
The Vikes ramped up? Signed Favre and drafted well…yep they went all in.
I also wouldn’t count out Favre not playing past this year, he’s having so much fun right now…Chilly gives hm the respect that the Packers and their fans should have.
You know nothing of what you speak in any of your post..it’s all pure speculation and hope.
Know a little bit about the franchise in terms of the inner workings…research, it’s all out there.
I guess you are afraid to debate me one on one…you have to go ” back door” and cry to Pervy about me….all the while doing the same thing you accuse me of doing….brilliant sir…well played….You are an asshat of epic proportions.
    Do yourself a favor…stop posting.

Larry Fitzgeralds football camp for pro’s, that he threw at The Bank (TCF Bank Stadium) is paying off. Vikings fans we need a new a stadium so do your part. go here when u get a chance. I thought I would check back and see some of the posts and I see all hell has broken loose.
    GBPackers -
Yes Packer fans have said Rodgers is a top 5 QB. They constantly point to his QB rating as evidence that he is in the top tier.
    Ambrose -
Ambrose, Ambrose, Ambrose…settle down, take a deep breath and relax.
    “I smell first round elimination”
Not if the Vikings continue as they are and get that first round bye.
“(Packers) played great the second half each time (against the Vikings)”
In the first game the Packers accumulated a bunch of points & yardage in garbage time. The second game they had a brief stretch in the third quarter (greatly helped out when Robison thought he was Devin Hester). Not exactly great.
“Im glad we have him (Rodgers) for the next five to ten years”
Are you sure about that with all of the sacks he’s been taking?
Beating a team a third time in a season isn’t as hard as most of you think, check out the stats. Of course talking about your team even making the playoffs, when they are one game over .500 and two weeks after losing to a winless team is quite brazen in and of itself. The Dallas win was nice, but remember, this was a Cowboy team that nearly lost to KC. Games against Pitt, Balt, Cards and Bears (hey, you count them as a tough win) will make it awfully tough.
