Wade Phillips upset with officials' mistakes

Dallas coach Wade Phillips says the officiating crew that worked the Cowboys’ game in Green Bay on Sunday made some errors that turned out to be costly in his team’s loss to the Packers.

Phillips says the officials failed to see it — and then failed to review it — when Packers punt returner Tramon Williams stepped out of bounds with 42 seconds left in the first half. According to Phillips, that gave the Packers a free seven yards to help set up their field goal as time expired in the first half.

“It was a seven-yard difference, and the guy ended up kicking a 52-yard field goal,” Phillips said, per Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com. “So things like that happened to us and we’ve got to find out why.”

That wasn’t the only mistake made by referee Jeff Triplette and his crew. Phillips also complained about a ruling on a fumble by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo: Phillips thought it was Cowboys running back Felix Jones who recovered the ball, but the officials on the field ruled that the Packers recovered. Phillips threw his red challenge flag and Triplette at first started to review the play, but then he remembered that the recovery was not a reviewable play.

Triplette acknowledged afterward that he screwed up on the question of whether he was permitted to review the play at all.

My mistake,” Triplette said. “That’s not a reviewable aspect of a play. A recovery of a loose ball in the field of play is not reviewable by rule, so we just couldn’t review it.”

And that wasn’t Triplette’s only mistake regarding a replay challenge. While watching the game I tweeted that Triplette is a horrible ref, and wondered how he keeps his job when he doesn’t even know basic instant replay procedures, regarding both that play and a challenge from Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

In the fourth quarter, McCarthy threw a challenge flag even though the Packers were out of challenges, and Triplette delayed the game while he dealt with the challenge that McCarthy couldn’t make. By rule, McCarthy should have been penalized for throwing the red flag when he didn’t have a challenge, but Triplette didn’t call the penalty.

Said Phillips of those issues, and an illegal block that Phillips said was enforced from the wrong spot on the field, “Things like that, we go to the league on those things and find out why.”

Why can’t it all just be reviewed like in college?

You would think that an NFL ref should know the two challenge limit.
I guess Ed Hochuli doesn’t look so bad anymore.

Stop your whining you big fat baby. You guys lost because you suck. It’s funny that Cowboys fans actually thought their team was good. They were talking Superbowl. Hahaha not with Wade Phillips. Remember when Wade benched Doug Flutie and went with Rob Johnson in that Buffalo playoff game?? What a big fat turd. Cowboys may limp into the playoffs and then lose first round….again….

  4. Dave J says: Nov 17, 2009 10:22 AM

So let me get this straight: when the Giants get blown out, but 4-5 penalties and no-calls arguably could have made it much closer, it’s a p*ssy thing to call out the refs.
When the Cowgirls get screwed over, it’s newsworthy?

If the Cowboys were winning by 40 points, like they should have been, does this really matter?

The cowboys did not deserve to win this game regardless of the terrible officiating. They played pathetically.

He didn’t seem upset the week before when the all the ref’s calls were in his favor.

Even as a packer fan I was pretty floored with the poor officiating the cowboys endured. I must say this is the first game in a while that the calls went our way. I’m used to 15 penalties a game with 14 against the packers and if there are mistakes made they’re usually made in favor of the opposition.

oh, kwitcherbitchen wade…. neither team is playing up to its potential this year, but the better team still won. go back to your gazillion dollar stadium and cry.

Wade is a joke. Never has a harsh word for his players. Always looking for an excuse.
RUN THE DAMN BALL! Maybe then the O line wouldn’t take so many penalties.
And get some ‘stick’um’ for Roy.

Phillips should be careful about complaining of wrong calls/non-calls. Not only is he getting close to making a non-voluntary contribution to the Human Fund, he is causing closer scrutiny of the wrong calls/non-calls that went in the Cowboys’ favor. Just as the first example of what so far amounts to six that I have found on tape, on Dallas’ first possession, their X lined up offsides. And it wasn’t even close. Yet, no call. So be careful about whining too much, Cowboys fans (MDS included). After all, do you really want to be in bed with Wade Phillips on ANY intellectual issue?
As for McCarthy’s attempted use of a third challenge, Triplette probably did not throw the flag because of his failure to advise McCarthy that he had exhausted all of his challenges at the conclusion of McCarthy’s failed second challenge, which is the referee’s responsibility. (It should be noted that Triplette also failed to advise the crowd/stadium of that fact when he announced his decision on that second Packers challenge.)

Wade Phillips is as about as motivational as Ben Stein. This is his idea of getting mad at such an ugly game. And no, the refs didnt cost the Cowgirls the game, the Cowgirls cost the Cowgirls the game, especially Roy im the number #1 receiver Williams. Can’t catch a cold, its so funny. Luckily for the Cowboys they get my Skins at home to bounce back. If the Skins play like they did against the Broncos, the Cowboys will be in trouble. But thats a big if…

  15. Wrathchild says: Nov 17, 2009 10:42 AM

Ok, it cost them three points. They still would have lost 14-7, and the cowgirls ’7′ came way late in the game, so that barely counts.

  16. mmdd1111 says: Nov 17, 2009 10:42 AM

Yeah, Cowboys fans called Eagles fan big babies when the officials screwed up royally on the 1st down McNabb should have gotten. But, when the Cowboys have a bad call go AGAINST them instead fo FOR them…..they cry. Bunch of hypocrites. All you Cowboy fans who told the Birds fans to shut up and stop whining….you fans and your coach need to do the same.

  17. footballrulz says: Nov 17, 2009 10:45 AM

Plenty of bad calls & no calls both ways, but the fumble recovery was a gift. Has to be one of the worse officiating crews in the game.

  18. Patrian says: Nov 17, 2009 10:45 AM

There is a difference in bad calls and poor officiating. Lately the officiating has been very bad in the NFL. When you throw in last nights 4th time out awarded (some official should have noticed), it just looks like incompetence.
Now all that being said, AND as a Cowboy fan, the blame to me lies more on the play calling and INCOMPETENCE of Jason Garret who abandons our successful running and decided to call a pass at the 4 yard line on a 1st and goal.

  19. red13 says: Nov 17, 2009 10:46 AM

I hate it when coaches whine about bad calls, but I saw the game and that crew sucked bad. Triplette’s a joke.

  20. Grulks says: Nov 17, 2009 10:47 AM

Wade, it doesn’t matter. You’re job as a NFL head coach is to make sure your team is so prepared, and is playing so well, that a few missed calls by the refs don’t affect the outcome of the game.
When you let the offense become one sided via constantly passing the ball, despite being down only 3 points, you failed miserably. Pretty much the same way you’ve been failing the Dallas faithful since you got here.
-Realist cowboy fan who is sick of the excuses

  21. DaDaubs says: Nov 17, 2009 10:49 AM

So, Phillips will complain about 7 free yards, but no mention when the officials CLEARLY missed an offsides call on the Dallas linemen a few plays later?
I mean, even JOE BUCK caught it….
That crew was just horrible both ways in that game. Nobody from that crew should be in another game…..

  22. AirlineGuy says: Nov 17, 2009 10:49 AM

Wade should be more upset with Garrett for refusing to use the three headed RB monster we have. Absolutely pathetic that our OC can’t run the ball to completely wear down a team.
I promise if he does that this week against the Skins, their defense is going to demolish the Cowboys. The entire first quarter should be 80% run plays (with Choice and Felix) to beat the defense down. Then even out the play count in the 2nd and 3rd, then the 4th is Babarian time.

Now when you say ALL the ref’s calls, do you mean to include the no call PI on Asante Samuel in the endzone right before the half where they had to settle for a FB instead of 6 and the ghost PI call on Witten that stalled a drive? As bad as the officiating was this past weekend, that is NO excuse as to how poorly Dallas played. They gave up on the run WAY TOO early making them one dimensional and easy to play against. They deserved the L that they got for believing that they are as good as people said they were last week…

  27. Nevisyakker says: Nov 17, 2009 10:57 AM

Yeah, and it was Triplette that ignored the run the entire game, threw interceptions and missed receivers all over the field, and didn’t catch a ball that went through his hands right at eye level and then seemed to be complaining that the QB once again didn’t throw the ball the way he needed it make catches, couldn’t make key defensive stops when they were most needed.
That dirty, rotten Triplette, why he shouldn’t even be allowed to represent the Cowboys if he can’t do a better job of it than that!

  28. gopher says: Nov 17, 2009 10:58 AM

I wish the NFL Network would discuss this type of bad officals on Wednesday when they talk to the head of the officals, instead he gets to discuss plays in which the rules allow him to support his refs. The officals should know the rules and it should be talked about and have him explain why the screwups.

  29. mrlaloosh says: Nov 17, 2009 10:59 AM

Incompetence is Jerry Jones hiring Phillips & Garrett to start with.
Jones needs a coach he can manipulate.
Even the Bucaneers put up 38 on Green Bay.
Whining about referees is a sign of someone who can’t do the job so lets blame the ref’s!

  30. Goozfraba69er says: Nov 17, 2009 11:05 AM

Why isn’t it the coach’s responsibility to know when a play is reviewable? I’ve seen many times the ref comes back and says “It is not a reviewable call. Team is not charged with a time out.” Shouldn’t the coach know when it is reviewable? If a play is not reviewable and they throw the flag, shouldn’t they be charged with a time out (or a delay of game penalty if they do not have a time out)? Otherwise coaches could use this tactic to get free stoppage of play. Total BS.

  31. irishpat says: Nov 17, 2009 11:05 AM

You’re harping on a 7 yard difference not being reviewed 2 days after and yet only had one little post on the worst call ever in the Bucs game on Clayton’s catch for a 1st down.
You need to rewatch that play and get some answers. Did you even read the referee’s justification to that BS? Where is the head referee guy’s admitting it was wrong? Clayton was laying on the ground with a defender on top of him and another one had knocked him down.
Why not talk about how that would have changed the outcome of the game, Bucs down 6-3 and get a first down and eventually kill the clock. Instead Miami gets 10 points off that and the Bucs lose by 2 points.
The story isnt dead, read PewterReport or JoeBucsFan, Raheem apologized for this Fword tirade.
Stop all the negative biasness against the Bucs just because West Virginia can’t win a game in their stadium. Its not the Bucs fault that Stewart isn’t the answer.
Also this post should have been about how big of a sore loser Wade Phillips is, they got soundly beat in prime time (again) by a team that just gave the Bucs their first win on the season, and he is complaining about 7 yards.

  34. Bill In DC says: Nov 17, 2009 11:33 AM

The Packers (defense) won the game regardless of the officiating, which was horrible.
The officials missed another huge call when they overturned the fumble recovery by Dallas in the second half as well. When they reviewed they said the returner’s knee was down before the Dallas player knocked the ball out, therefore it wasn’t a fumble. The only problem with this is that the returner wasn’t touched by a Dallas player before he went down to one knee. He subsequently lifted the knee off the turf and continued forward, then the Dallas player contacted him and knocked the ball out. The correct call was that the GB returner was NOT down by contact (anymore than a receiver is who goes to the ground while making a catch and is not touched by the defense) and it was a fumble.
The Officials are horrible this year, they can’t count TOs (see the Browns), the can’t count challenges (see GB), they don’t know the rules (see multiple instances in almost every game), they don’t throw penalties even when they have a lot of time to get it right (see GB), they miss ridiculously obvious calls (see lots of head to head contact on QBs that are ignored).

I agree with the first sentence, disagree with the second. You can’t have watched the game.
The Dallas D played very well, holding the Packers (who average 27 pts/ game) to 17 with 14 of that being almost gifted by turnovers by the Dallas O at the 1 and 7 yd lines and that they were on the field almost the entire 3rd Qtr. It was 3-0 at the start of the 4th qtr – how can you possibly say the GB O ‘outplayed’ the Dallas D? No way.
The only phase the Packers outplayed Dallas was the GB D, who played an absolutely awesome game, Woodson especially. That was enough.

  36. simple_simon1 says: Nov 17, 2009 11:42 AM

I agree fully. I’m upset with this year’s officiating as well. And I’m sick of hearing that it’s the right call. The only reason these calls turn out right sometimes is because the basic idea of the rules are being made with so much grey area that no matter what is called, the call can be said to be right. It’s pathetic.
Here’s two perfect examples. In the Bucs/Dolphins game. The incomplete pass that, upon further review became an INT to Taylor instead of down by contact. In the old NFL that would have been called a completed pass and down by contact. But, with the new garbage rules of how a catch is a catch, he has to hold onto the ball through to the ground, so it’s not. The rule has so much grey area that no matter what the refs call on the field, they’re right. It’s a dumb rule that needs to be scrapped immediately. Go back to the old ways of possession. It was much easier.
Second example is the basic idea that both refs and the announcers doing the game have no idea of the rules. I take you to the Cardinals/Seahawks game. A ball was picked off in the endzone by the Seahawks. Problem was that the defender went out of bounds and then came in to catch it. Then, before reversing the call for the completely wrong reason, they initially gave the ball to the Seahawks by saying that he “re-established in bounds before intercepting the ball”. Problem is, that’s not how that rule works. And nobody seemed to catch it. Not the coaches, announcers, refs, or anybody. Establishing in bounds only counts to recovering fumbles or downing the ball on punts. On a pass play, there is no such rule. If there was, receivers would simply run out of bounds to avoid bump coverage and come back in bounds to make the catch. Simply, if you go out of bounds, you cannot be the first person to touvh the ball, period.
The lack of understanding of the rules is insane. I don’t know how a person can be a ref without thiis common knowledge of the rules. I also don’t know how announcers can have their jobs without this common knowledge. It completely ruins the game.

Bad calls all-around……..if this, if that, if my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle. Packer defense looked pretty good. The new rookie linebacker Brad Jones may not give up his old spot to Aaron, if he keeps playing like that. This defense is young and is only going to get better. I wish I could say the same about the offense, but I still think the Packers can make it as a wildcard. The Bucs game really hurt, but looking ahead, they should finish well.

Relax haters, “Wade upset” is an exaggeration. This was simply a brief line of questioning at his normal Monday press conference. He was asked about several calls that effected the game. He never blamed officiating for the outcome.
Btw, every week every single team submits to the league office a list of questionable calls or officiating that they have a question about. Just normal ho-hum NFL business.
But if you put a headline on your blog that says Cowboys complain about officiating, you’ll get lots of hits.

  44. Bob Nelson says: Nov 17, 2009 12:38 PM

I still believe that over the course of a season the calls that go against your team are equaled by the calls for them.
People tend to forget the lucky breaks their team gets but remmember the bad calls.
Good teams overcome the bad calls and take advantage of the good ones.
That said I would not want Triplette working my teams games and certainly no playoff games.
It is show shameful to see that Dallas team whine. You wouldn’t see Tom Landry, Bob Lily, or Roger Staubach whine and moan.

Triplette is a complete joke. Him and Leavy need to be set adrift in crates, or at least never allowed to call a game again. Pitiful.
That being said, I don’t think either call really swung the momentum that much. With regard to the fumble, these things happen to every team, ask Seattle or San Diego. As for the challenge, that should have been a penalty without a doubt, but I still say McCarthy was a genius for trying it. If Triplette’s not going to learn the rules, you can’t blame coaches for taking advantage of him.

Don’t you think for that kind of money certain interests will receive some assistance as needed. Every non Steeler fan knows Harrison should have been ejected in the SB last year. They used to say pro wrestling was “real” too. It’s all just entertainment for money. Look the officials sucked for both teams so its not an excuse. if the “#1″ Roy doesnt fumble that ball he scores a TD and it is all moot. I do agree that McCarthy should have been penalized the 15 yards for the challenge flag but at the same time with the way Dallas was playing offense it wouldnt have mattered much anyways. Get over it Fat Terd and prepare for Washington because if you lose to them at home you will have a far worse press conference next Monday morning to have to deal with….
And Dallas doesnt suck idiots, they have terrible coaching and it doesnt allow them to take advantage of their talent. Same record as the Pats.

Gomer looked confused at times, as did Sgt Wade…December is just around the corner boys.

  60. Roethlisberger's Bitch Tits says: Nov 17, 2009 2:31 PM

Its ashame since Dallas has two legit starting running backs and one of the better change of pace backs w/ Jones, and they either refuse or don’t know how to run the ball. This teams strength is not w/ Homo but it should be pounding the ball at teams making the defense hurt and want to quit. Wade Phillips is a big douche who is being controlled by the puppet master with the plastic face.

If I tune in to a game and see Tripplette’s mug I cringe. There is no doubt he is the worst.
I don’t understand if you can use replay to determine if a player is down, you can’t use it to see a player recovers a fumble in the open field, wraps both arms around the ball and is touched by another player flying in and jarring the ball loose. i believe the ruling would be ‘down by contact’. And I am NOT a cowboy fan.

“After all, do you really want to be in bed with Wade Phillips on ANY intellectual issue?”
Better Phillips than Reid, McNabb, McCarthy or Triplette, none of whom can grasp the basics of the rules of the game.
    ——————
To be fair, Vox wouldn’t know what it’s like to be in bed with anyone, except when he’s “grasping the basics” himself and wondering why no woman will talk to him. Hence why he’s “lonely” on his Myspace page.

Which for a Cowboys fan… is a Madden Trophy? A BBQ-Eating competition blue ribbon? I’m not getting it. The Cowboys can’t win in December, let alone February.

“Sounds like Wade is a bit of crybaby.”
At least he’s not a dumbass like soon-to-be-fired Mike McCarthy, who never should have been hired in the first place. Come on, the guy was a failed OC, you guys thought he was some kinda good coach or something.
    ————————————————–
He was smart enough to beat you guys! As for the soon-to-be fired quote…Your beloved Doughboy could be on that list, if the winless playoff drought continues another year! What is that 3 or 4 years under Sir Wade…I lose track because, honestly, who cares about Dallas after Thanksgiving! I wonder where Rom-O-Choke will be spending his vacation this year??

  68. VoxVagina says: Nov 17, 2009 4:57 PM

Eagles got screwed over last week by a few calls. It’s only fair that the Cowboys should get screwed as well

somewhere on another thread, JerrysKid said last Sunday was Packers SB and that Dallas was looking for the big prize in Feb. Sarcastically telling him to keep lookin.
Keep dreaming JerrysWorld. No 6th trophy this year.

I love all these Cowboy haters that come on these posts and just hate all day long. It let’s me know that they are much more interested in the Cowboys than paying attention to their own teams cause it’s the same moe’s on here everytime hating on the Cowboys. Your right football, i might rather trophy #6 come next year at home in the greatest stadium ever built.

Whoops! I didn’t mean to offend you.
I realize that calling someone a Cowboy’s fan is one of the worst football insults one can dish out. Probably the worst thing you can say on this board about someone without Florio censoring your post, really. Sorry!

    touché…
Theres a reason they call them America’s Team–plus we’re still leading the beast! Lets see, Dallas has gotten to February and beyond…..FIVE more times than the Fagles.
Worry about your own pathetic coaches before you start bashing on Dallas’.

America’s Team was in the 90′s. You remember, back when you guys could win a playoff game? that’s over now.
The Beast, conversely, was last season. With the Eagles losing to Oakland, pathetic showings by the Giants and Boys over the last two weeks respectively, and the Redskins doing what they have been, that’s over too. I believe most are now calling it the Least. Kinda catchy.
Oh, and before you label me, I am by no means a Cowboys hater, and would have no reason to be after we just beat y’all anyway. I like Romo a lot in fact, among others. I just have to tell it like it is.

  76. McBleezy says: Nov 17, 2009 11:13 PM

    Beer cheese….
They were America’s Team far before the 90′s…then they were America’s Team DYNASTY.
Packs played that game like is was their super bowl…like I read earlier–their season was over weeks ago. Dont get too high on that one. Dallas was one missed field goal and one fumble away from tying that game up. As shitty as they played and as many mistakes as they made plus significant injuries….Id say the Packs are kinda soft.

  77. jrmbadger says: Nov 18, 2009 10:26 AM

Wow, Jerry Jones has had the officials in his back pocket for years. I’m actually shocked that the calls went the Packers way for a change.
Hey Cowboy fans….. Remember that Thursday nighter two years ago were Al Harris stripped TO of the ball in Dallas territory, but the refs ruled TO stopped by forward progress? Terrible call.
What was that phrase about karma?

Regardless of when it started, they haven’t had that title SINCE the 90′s. Again, back when they were winning.
Couldn’t agree more on the Pack not being much this year though. People were obviously playing/coaching for their jobs that game.
I’m sure you understand, with the way our season has gone, I’m happy to get a win at all though, and particularly against a competitive team. That’s all this is.
