Raiders bench Russell for Gradkowski

The JaMarcus Russell era has ended.

For now.

Raiders coach Tom Cable, who yanked Russell for Bruce Gradkowski during Sunday’s 16-10 loss to the Chiefs, said Wednesday that Gradkowski is the new starter.

Per RaiderBeat.com, Cable called the move an “easy decision.”

Through nine starts in 2009, Russell has a passer rating of 47.7, with two touchdown passes and nine interceptions.  For his career, the first overall pick in the 2007 draft has a passer rating of 65.5.

Gradkowski’s first Raiders start will come against the 7-2 Bengals.  The former Toledo Rocket started 11 games as a Buccaneers rookie in 2006 and one with the Browns in 2008.

Gradkowski actually beat the Bengals in 2006. I hope he took pictures and had his family at the game, cause it won’t be quite so pretty this time.

I’ve never been so excited to see Bruce Gradkowski play.

Heyward-Bey needs to workout with a QB.
If Jamarcus won’t stay and work with the kid… might as well give the ball to someone who will.
No great loss trading the 2011 pick for Seymour. Raiders don’t know how to draft anyways.

Translation: Al Davis apparently finally gave Cable permission to make the change which is long overdue.

Its about fkn time. Now, don’t even think of playing him until he shows the same desire, and effort to win that Rich Gannon did.
that means being the first one in the building, and the last one out. Lose some weight too fatass.

  8. Westbasco says: Nov 18, 2009 6:15 PM

Is it really going to matter?

  9. SeaColt213 says: Nov 18, 2009 6:15 PM

I personally think Russell is over-rated, but it sucks that he gets this bad wrap for being a bad QB when his supporting cast sucks too.
There are many examples of the same scenario where players either excelled in other programs or sucked depending on the squad.
Cutler- good in Denver, mediocre in Chicago.
Orton- mediocre (at best) in Chicago, damn efficient in Denver.
Randy Moss- Silent in Oakland, And well we know how he’s doing in New England.
Jeff Garcia- a great “utility QB” in Philly and Tampa… Just ok in San Fran and virtually non-existent in Oakland.
Get this guy a damn line before you start throwing stones at Mr. Bust.

Raiders- Gotta keep laughing to keep from crying. Good work.
Ravens- I listen to 105.7 every day and I’ve never heard a bigger bunch of whining conspiracy theorists in my life. 8 words: The NFL is not out to get you.
Steelers/Cowboys/Eagles- All of you are retarded. Each one of you think there is a Mike Florio bias against your team. I’m a birds fan and it makes me sick. Losers.
Dever- No more SB! Told you Dawk was on the downside!
Vikings- Hhhahhahhahaha! Y’all need to lay off the nitrous, you’re WAY too high right now.

‘Scouting Report’…..”Russell has all the tools.”
No he doesn’t . He has no brains, work ethic or discipline.
It’s an absolute disgrace that this lazy lard-ass dope was drafted in his position and given a $60,000,000.00 contract.
He’ll be out of the league completely within two years. Check him out in three years and I’d bet he weighs close to 400 lbs. He’ll probably eat most of his earnings and blow the rest on bad investments.

  30. gwinn1952 says: Nov 18, 2009 7:00 PM

What a shame on Russell. Such a hugh prospect coming out of college but never took the NFL seriously. Where were the coaches and players as mentors to encourage him to study, fighting weight etc. ? He was lost in the system…..maybe another team would have made a difference.

  31. Raider13 says: Nov 18, 2009 7:08 PM

Might as well bring back the ” Snake ” Stabler!! He probably would do better at his age than all of them put together.
The root cause is Al Davis. Until he is gone, the Raiders will continue to be patetic.

gwinn, if Paul Hackett(Raiders QB coach) and Ted Tollner(Passing game coordinator) couldn’t get anything out of Russell, theres a pretty good chance no one will. These guys are considered the best at their jobs. Both have combined over 60 years coaching experience in the league.
Stop making excuses for this lazy turd. He got paid, and thats all he wanted. Every now and then a collossal bust comes along ie – Mandarich, Marinovich, Leaf. Russell is the latest.

Sitting on the pine might be the best for Russell. If the other quarterbacks have some success, he can learn by watching. At the moment, he is in football limbo which means the pressure is off to perform but the pressure is on to get better. He can’t be passive about his career.
    GO STEELERS!

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GarcJe00.htm
20+ teams in the NFL could use that “just OK” right about now. He was easily a top 5 NFL QB in SF. He was never taken all that serious because he began his pro career in Canada, where he wasn’t just another ok QB either.
Did you just start watching football 3 years ago?
Now on Russell it was shocking to see him pout on the sidelines Sunday. Most pro athletes would know why they are pulled and can admit when they suck and just not getting it. As the starter and the leader of the Raiders he should have been helping coach Gradkowski and helping the team anyway he could with a headset, clipboard, anything (even though he is probably best suited to bring Grad’s gatorade to him when the other team has the ball.) instead Gerald Warren had to console him.
If Cable had any balls he’d make him inactive this Sunday also. Make him get it or get out.

I just hope the refs don’t intervene and flag the Bengals again for tackling Gradkowski. Back in 2006, when Justin Smith sacked him to end the game, Mike Carey threw a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty and gave them an automatic first down. The Bengals, probably shell shocked, let him score a game winning TD and that game ended up keeping us out of the playoffs (though we still had other games we could have won to make it in). I still despise Mike Carey to this day. Hopefully he’s not refereeing this game. If so, welcome to 3-7 Raiders.

What a B.S. phantom roughing the passer play on Smith. Then Bruce the Douche threw a 4th down pass to Clayton who is probably still in the league because of that catch. Even my bud who was a Buc’s fan said it was a horseshit call. It really pisses me off that we can’t get an auto w with lardass in the lineup. Now we got to deal with this douchebag.

  76. eklypse69 says: Nov 19, 2009 1:38 PM

    SeaColt123,
There is one giant hole in your theory…..
Cutler, Orton, Moss, Garcia, all showed up to play. They studied, they worked their butts off (ok, maybe Moss fell away in MN and OAK after he realized he was going nowhere with them) and they were focused on achieving a goal – A super bowl championship. Russell has no goals left. He’s a multi-millionaire overnight. Case closed. Why keep playing the lottery after you’ve won?
This is one of the biggest problems with drafting kids straight out of college, unproven in the NFL arena for obscene amounts of cash. What’s the incentive to do well when you’re already set for life straight outta the gate – good, bad, or otherwise? He got paid, and he laid back. No reason to overachieve or try when you’ve already scored a huge chunk of change.
Bottom line is part of the problem is your supporting cast, no doubt – you can see it in all the greats and how their production changes from year to year depending on their runners & recievers. But that’s not where it ends. It also depends a great deal upon the focus, resolve, and dedication of the player. When Russell can’t even read the most basic of QB red flags (pressure, zone coverage, defense line scheme, etc) there’s a lot more to it than young recievers.
Some of those incomplete passes were reciever error, no doubt. But a great deal of his passes either sail 6-10 feet above the intended reciever, 3 feet behind the intended reciever, at the feet of the intended reciever, or into unbreakable coverage. Those are all QB failure, not reciever failure.
I don’t think Gradkowski is the answer, but using a car metaphor; a donut’s better than trying to limp along on the rim for the next 7 weeks.

  77. Wardo says: Nov 19, 2009 2:57 PM
