With the Chicago Bears stinking it up in prime time games this season (zero wins, three losses, and 11 interceptions from Jay Cutler), they apparently didn’t appreciate NBC’s decision to leave their game against the Eagles in prime time during the first weekend of the flex schedule.
The Bears won’t be producing Cutler, coach Lovie Smith, or G.M. Jerry Angelo for pregame interviews with Bob Costas.
But the Bears say there’s no rift with NBC.
“We have a great relationship with NBC,” team spokesman Scott Hagel said Thursday, according to the Chicago Tribune. “We’re excited to be playing a home game on Sunday Night Football.”
Coach Lovie Smith also addressed the situation on Thursday.
“I’m trying to figure out where that all came from,” Smith said. “We try to do whatever we can for anyone that’s coming in. We’ve played quite a few Sunday night games, so there’s not a whole lot more for us to talk about. We’re making our players available right up until game time.
“As far as participating an awful lot right now, it’s kind of time for us to play football. We try to do as many interviews as we can during game week. Once you get a little bit closer to it, we’re kind of reeling things in a little bit.”
Our opinion? (And this is PFT not NBC doing the opining.) The Bears know that nothing good would come from pregame interviews with Cutler, Smith, or Angelo.
For example, Costas would ask Cutler, “Why all of sudden are you not any good?” Or, “Why do you often have a facial expression that suggests you just took a bite out of something that tastes like fertilizer?” (But likely more eloquently than that.)
Costas would ask Smith, “So when are you getting fired?” (Again, more eloquently.)
And Costas would ask Angelo, “So when are you firing Smith? And when are you getting fired?”
So it arguably made sense for the Bears to avoid the situation altogether. But does a sudden siege mentality really help matters?
If they get a win, maybe it does.
Somebody get Cutler his pacifier.
Smart move, cutler seems to choke on primetime, does them no good to talk to anyone that would make him more self-conscious. It’s like madden saysin his own deranged form of math : “90% of the game is half mental”.
They should have flexed them out, it would have been far better for ratings. For some reason this team is a brakeless down hill train waiting for a crash. Who needs to watch that?

As a Bears fan I am strongly in support of the gag order. We haven’t played football recently so what is there to talk about. Let’s win some games then I can see having something to talk about. How many different ways can you answer “Why do you guys suck fight now?”
Well, they should look at the Eagles record on Sunday. It’s even worse. And, I seem to recall them rolling over iNdy on Sunday night just last year.
