Vikings extend Brad Childress

A day after reports surfaced that the Minnesota Vikings and head coach Brad Childress were close to a deal on a contract extension, that deal has reportedly been reached.

John Clayton of ESPN reports that Childress and the team have agreed to a deal that will keep the coach under contract to the team through the 2013 season.

Clayton reports that the deal is believed to be worth $4 million to $5 million a year, which will at least double the $2 million annual salary on his current deal.

Childress has a 32-25 record with the Vikings. At 8-1 this season, he’s off to by far his best start as a head coach.

Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson saved his job. Last year the Vikings were considering firing him. I guess he can thank them later

Yes! Good news for the Vikings!
Let the false expressions of joy, hysterical whining, and general pity partying from the Packers, Bears, and Lions begin.

Bad move. Win at least ONE playoff game, THEN a deal should be cut.
I’m sure they’ll spin it as some confidence booster, but without a proven playoff track record, I think this could really backfire, especially when Favre is gone.

He’s been 6-10, 8-8, 10-6 and now currently 8-1. Name another coach that’s shown such consistent improvement? The guy gets hammered unfairly….much like the comment that Favre got him this contract. Really? Is that coming from the same people that called Childress a joke when he pursued Favre hard and said ‘Favre will be hurt by mid-October and the team will implode’.
Can’t have it both ways. Can’t slam him for pursuing Favre and then give Favre all the credit. Stupidity.

He will be fired after next season, after Favre rertires of course.

The is good news for every other team in the league and every other head coach.
Whatever amount of money Brad Childress is being paid every coach can argue they deserve more.
The day that Brett Favre leaves the viklings this deal will look even better.
It also means he will be head coach when their lease expires and the franchise moves.
Only half of those changeable vikling customers actual believe the guy has any measurable competence. No one else does.
This move will haunt the viklings for years…LOL

  36. JimmySmith says: Nov 19, 2009 4:47 PM

Yes, there is a God in Heaven. This whole plan to ship out Brent Favre has produced some positive consequences, it got Childress a contract extension that he otherwise would have never gotten.

In other words, the Vikings brass is the opposite of it’s fans. They have the ability to stick by a guy through thick and thin. Think those playoff tickets are going to sell well this year?

  41. Beer Cheese Soup says: Nov 19, 2009 5:02 PM

This is a definite high point in an otherwise lousy season for all of us Pack fans. I would hate to be Adrian Peterson right now though, poor guy.
Now, if Favre retires, except this time he stays retired for a change, and then we finally send Owlman packing, I could easily see us retaking our hold on the division as soon as next year.
5-4 isn’t anything to be too proud of, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel now. Hallelujah.

  42. Richm2256 says: Nov 19, 2009 5:03 PM

Funny what a washed up, will he retire-won’t he retire, interception throwing, injury prone QB will do for a coach’s career, isn’t it?
Just wondering if the Vikes might not have wanted to wait until, say, the first week of February before inking that new deal….. let’s hope they still think it was worth it by the end of the season.
By the way, was anybody standing at the door with offers for Chilly?
    Didn’t think so.

  43. Bart says: Nov 19, 2009 5:04 PM

  44. gopher says: Nov 19, 2009 5:05 PM

  45. breadman says: Nov 19, 2009 5:07 PM

  49. stetai says: Nov 19, 2009 5:12 PM

Well deserved. Moreso for the off the field stuff than on-field coaching decisions.
He put his ass on the line trading for Jarod Allen, using a top 10 pick on an “injury prone” Adrian Peterson, dropping Bobby Wade for Greg Lewis, “overpaying” for Guard, Steve Hutchinson, and finally completely bending over backwards to secure the services of a certain 40 year old QB who’s having his best statistical season ever.
No matter what happens after this season, he deserves the payday.

  50. Ottawa49ers says: Nov 19, 2009 5:18 PM

    Bob Nelson says:

Jay Glazer has been not just incorrect but improper and wrong in the past regarding Brett Favre.
Jay Glazer has nothing else to write about with the vikings. Their QB’s, WR’s, DB’s, TE’s, Coaching Staff, and stadium are all amongst the worst if not the worst in the NFL.
Since no one would bother to read about the vikings, Glazer has to write something that will cause people to pay attention. He wrote another Brett Favre story.
Brett Favre is the most popular football player in America. His jersey last season out sold every team’s jerseys.
The NFL’s lowest revenue team, the vikings, know they need bailouts to avoid blackouts. A popular player like Favre would do that.
The viking franchise knows they have the worst QB’s in the NFL. Brett Favre would change that.
The problem for the vikings is that Brett Favre does not want to taint his image and legacy by being associated a bad franchise that will be relocating in a couple of years.
Brett Favre will not stoop that low even if the vikings offered $25 million a season.
Brett Favre is the greatest human on the planet in 2000 years, but even he cannot fix that viking franchise mess in one season.

Chilly: 32-25, 1 playoff appearance. Failed at home. Contract extension.
MM: 32-25, 1 playoff appearance. Failed in NFC Championship game. Will be fired if the Packers don’t make the playoffs.
I guess we see the standards the respective teams are held to. Side note-In MM’s Championship loss, his quarterback and current quarterback of the Vikings completed more passes to the other team in the 4th quarter and overtime of that game.

  58. CanadianVikingFan says: Nov 19, 2009 5:33 PM

I expect a new Quarterback for purple if Favre retires for good, perhaps Tim Tebow LOL, I expect another NFC North Title and I expect a Superbowl win if the wilfs in fact signed Chilly. And if he fails, run him out and let oakland pick him up.
I was really hoping they’d at least wait till after the season, to see how far we actually make it…. Not cool being stuck with the Colonel without knowing where we actually finish.

Should have waited till season’s end, but if he sucks down the line, the Wilf’s have so much dough it won’t matter if they want to can him.
Once again, it’s interesting to see all the lame-ass Pack fan posts. Usually, there’s a couple with some reasoning and class, but not today.
Yeah, it sucks to have a coach that the players like, generally makes decent personel moves (T-Jack notwithstanding), and has improved every year.
It must be so much better to be the fan of a team with a lousy GM, maybe one Pro-Bowl player, no O-line, average D-line, no RB, old corners, one-dimensional LBs, a string of lousy high draft picks and no free agent prospects cause the GM builds through substandard 3rd and 4th round draft picks. No, it must be heavenly to have a coach that can’t count challenges, can’t adjust his offense mid-game (or pre-game for that matter) to account for team weaknesses, coaches the least disciplined most penalized team in the league, and can’t take criticism from a frigging maintenance worker. The future is so much brighter in Green Bay.

  61. Akshun says: Nov 19, 2009 5:40 PM

I remember all the idiots a couple years ago calling for the head of Tom Coughlin.. just proves these fans have no idea what they’re talking about.. It’s funny when people credit the players for winning games, but when they lose its all the coaches fault.. it’s either one or the other..it’s the players that win and lose or the coaches, not one or the other..

  62. launcher says: Nov 19, 2009 5:41 PM

    Packer fans,
Would you rather have Childress or McCarthy?
If Favre is saving Childress’s career, why were the Vikings 10-6 last year without him?
In fact, if you say that Allen/Peterson/Favre/Harvin, etc.. are masking his abilities as a head coach and the vikings just have superior players, who built the majority of the team through the draft, free agency and trades?
If Childress can continue to bring in the level of talent that he has in the past, I’m all for keeping him as a head coach and the packers can keep your has-beens and never-will-bes.

  66. Hauschild says: Nov 19, 2009 6:19 PM

Uh, I think it’s time to begin throwing the word “genius” around with Brad Childress. He knew he was on his way outta town and all he did was pester Brett Favre until he finally got Brett to play. What, about 10 phone calls or so and it made him a guaranteed additional 10 million dollars???
If that was not one of the most BRILLIANT moves in the history of the NFL, I’m not sure what is.

As a Viking fan, I can say I’m torn on the extension.
As much as he has help improve this team (FA pickups and drafting, yes, he is a part of it) I think he is doing a good job.
That said, I still want to see him win in the post season. The fanbase will turn sour if there is another one and out this year (but I highly doubt that will be the case).
    To all the above posters:
The Vikings are not going to L.A. Not only is the Minnesota legislature going to get a stadium done within the next year, the NFL will not allow the move. Please go look at the numbers. There are 4 other teams that will be moved LONG before the Vikings.
    To Packer fans:
Even though you idiots aren’t worth the time, I’ll give it to you. Your teams front office and head coach are a laughing stock of the league. 13-3 to 6-10, and you will end up having yet another top 10 pick in this years draft (which BTW, your front office will screw up, AGAIN).
I’m not a huge Childress fan, but I’ll take him and our front office’s decision making over Ted “all I do is destroy organizations” Thompson and that down syndrome looking coach you have across the boarder.
    Enjoy it!!

Lol. A random Vikings hater…We have lost so much in Minnesota that it’s just nice to get the feeling of a magical season. So go ahead and bash. Everyone in Minnesota knows how the Vikings are. It’s the Minnesota curse. But with all the Vikings weapons, talent, no distractions, etc…Is it out of the relm of possibility that Vikings do become an elite team for the next few years? Not really. I was on the FIRE CHILLY bandwagon for his first two years as a coach. But he has improved this team by two wins every year he has coached. The Vikings made the playoffs with the QB Combination of Gus Freotte (Eh) and T-Jax (Whom I support). The Vikings have had excellent drafts and have received some excellent players via Free Agency. Not to mention, some Vikings assistants (Tomlin, Bevell, Frazier) have all received coaching jobs or are on the hot seat to become coaches. Do I think Chilly is a good coach? I have my doubts. I believe he would be a phenominal GM. But he has not done anything that shows me that he did not deserve a contract. You can say it was Farve, AD, Harvin, WW, The Hutch, or Allen, but in Chilly’s first year, he stole Chester Taylor/Drafted Greenway and T-Jax/and got this team primed for the future. Sure the Vikes went 6-10, but for a first year coach, that’s alright. Then 8-8. Finally 10-6. Anywhere that would be more than acceptable. So…Congrats Chilly! Win us one and keep our team in Minny!

  74. PervyHarvin says: Nov 19, 2009 7:32 PM

Great to hear all of the fear and insecurity coming from opposing teams fans. You all witnessed the drafting and free agent wisdom Chilly has used in the last few years. We are a team of stars and up and coming stars. More charisma on this team than any other out there. The media camera is focused on the Midwest now, suck it East and West coast. Keep bringing in the talent Chilly, the rest will all play out. The haters will hate, and we will just keep winning. Here’s to NFC dominance for several years.

  75. BigSnert says: Nov 19, 2009 7:37 PM

Maybe you viling commentors would want him to accomplish something (like just one playoff win) before boasting of Baldy.
They made Mr. Noodle more expensive than Jauron to buy out.
Do you really think the new fans in LA will like this guy? No coach is worse at speaking that Brad Childress.
This isn’t as funny as not being able to get your first round pick selection to the podium on time 2 consecutive years, or arriving at the Lions stadium late for the start of a game, but it is another example of how not to run a franchise.
As for the claims of a possible Championship; They haven’t even won their Conference since Gerald Ford was President and have no trophies or trophy case to show anyone.
They will soon be moving somewhere, but they will probably screw up a move to Roskie’s stadium.

If Bob Nelson and the Packer fans don’t like it, it must be a good thing. Childress has earned it. He turned an undisciplined bunch of underachievers into a disciplined team. That meant hard choices and hurt feelings, and some missteps along the way, but it paid off. He made believers out of some players, like Winfield, who didn’t take to the new ways immediately. The one exception was Birk, but everyone parted without harsh words. I remember when some fans expressed regret that the Vikings pulled the trigger too quickly on Childress and didn’t hire Mike McCarthy. ROFLMFAO

Guess what team in the NFC Black and Blue division has won the most division titles since ’61, when the Vikings joined the league?
I’ll give you a hint, its not the Bears, Packers, Lions, or Bucs (when they were in the division).
I also believe even though they have yet to win a Super Bowl, the Vikings have played in more championship games than any of those teams since ’61 as well.
Try to act like you know what you are talking about before you talk out of your pie hole.
