Winslow: Vilma couldn't guard me

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 1-8 and the New Orleans Saints are 9-0, so you’d think the Bucs would avoid talking any trash about the Saints as the teams prepare to play on Sunday.

However, as Cosmo Kramer once said to Jerry Seinfeld, “You’d think so, but you’d be wrong.”

Actually, Bucs tight end Kellen Winslow is talking trash toward Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, saying that when the two were teammates at the University of Miami, Vilma couldn’t cover him in practice — and, according to Winslow, neither could any of the other players on the Hurricanes’ defense.

“You can ask Vilma man, Vilma couldn’t guard me. D.J. [Williams] couldn’t guard me. Sean Taylor couldn’t guard me, respect, but none of those guys could guard me,” Winslow said. “It is what it is. They’ll tell you the same thing. Vilma probably won’t, but yeah I owned those guys.”

Winslow, who laughed as he said his comments were “all in fun,” is having one of his best NFL seasons in his first year in Tampa Bay, with 42 catches for 454 yards and five touchdowns this year. Some Saints players may now have some extra motivation to slow him down on Sunday.

Gotta love it when a guy on one of the worst teams in the league spouts off like they are SB contenders.
Hey Kellen, why don’t you go take another ride on your crotch rocket ?

I’m sure Vilma took them “as fun”. Sure, who doesn’t love their college teammate calling them out, right?
When will these gusy learn to just shut up and play? And could anyone not take joy in planting Winslow’s fat mouth in the turf and whispering in his ear “relax K, it’s all in good fun”.

So, I guess we can expect a half dozen or so TD’s from Kel-Kel?

  4. bearsrule says: Nov 19, 2009 1:07 PM

This is innocent. A friend good ribbing a former teammate in fun. I can’t stand Winslow, but the media needs to back off this. This is not bulletin board material.

I doubt there will be any real extra motivation other than showing up an old buddy. It really sounds like he was just needling an old teammate.

Ya well as they became elite players in the league you phizzled out to a decent tight end

Can we start issuing fines to any athlete who says “It is what it is.”

Another obscure and insignificant Seinfeld quote. You should be watching NFLN instead of your local Fox affiliate if you’re going to be staying up til 1PM every night team Florio…. IMO.
I am hoping Freeman can find Winslow a little more often, although I can’t complain with the production my fantasy squad has received from the outspoken TE so far.

Yeah K2, you’re probably right. In college you may have owned Vilma. However, I think you’re forgetting that little motorcycle accident in Cleveland in which you shredded your knee.
Now you have to push off constantly to get open and you can’t run block (to be fair, you never could do that very well).
Something tells me that Vilma isn’t too concerned, particularly because the Saints will be up by 28 after the first quarter.

The Bucs beat the Packers, and could beat the Saints.
Freeman is a very, very good quarterback for his age. He will be scrambling around the pocket, and picking up yards with his legs. Then he’ll throw to either K2 or Antonio Bryant, whoever is open. Or hand it off to Carnell Williams.
This is a huge trap game for the Saints. I am taking the Bucs on this one.

Kellen is a soldier. Just ask him. He’ll tell you. I’m so glad they traded this loud mouth punk when they could. There’s no way in hell he’ll be a legitimate threat on the field after 2010. He gets his knee scoped twice every offseason. Not to mention the problems with his shoulder and ankle. It’s a shame he got into that accident. No one will ever get to see the player he could’ve been. The one that actually warranted th 4th overall pick.

I love it. Here’s hoping he has a stellar day…have him on my fantasy team. But he’s not going to win the game by himself. 42-10 Saints. Who Dat!!!

Their old teammates, nothing wrong with giving your boy some lip!
My Saints O needs to light it up, especially for our banged up secondary.

I know right, sometimes I don’t even make it to lunch…..

I have a better idea, Florio. Why don’t you ask some of “The Soldier’s” former U teammates how many of them thought he was an A-Hole in college, and still is now? What a tool this dude is! Take away his 102yd, 2TD game against Philly and he is ranked right there with such TE luminaries as Bo Scaife and Robert Royal.
Do us a favor, K2, and shut the F up.

  17. texasPHINSfan says: Nov 19, 2009 2:15 PM

it seems like no one can cover those tampa TE’s.
Vilma can’t cover Winslow, the Seattle PD can’t cover Stevens….
    too soon?

  18. DanSnyder says: Nov 19, 2009 2:23 PM

Sean couldn’t guard him? I’m sorry but maybe in college Winslow had the advantage because its alot easier to run from someone then chase but the short time Sean was around he made more of an impact the Winslow ever did.

There are certain athletes that should just be closely consulted by coaches, agents, friends, teammates, and advised that is just better off if they stay away from microphones. Names like Reggie Bush, Larry Johnson, and the aforementioned Kellen Winslow the 2nd come to mind. The reason they should be consulted is that whenever they open their trap to a writer’s waiting microphone or microcassette, the only thing they are capable of is saying something ridiculous or inflammatory. Once again, Winslow has blessed us with his glaring lack of foresight and inability to understand the impact of statements made that will do nothing but create more intensity on the part of his future opponants and thus make his team have to work that much harder to handle and already tough football team on gameday.

  20. ZombieRevolution says: Nov 19, 2009 2:42 PM

Nice to see MDS got the PFT handbook- create as much controversy as possible in statements that were not intended to be full on trash talk.
Its too bad PFT is not subjected to the review of all its verbal statements as the athletes it looks at are. Given some of the off the wall statements Florio makes in writing there has to be some great ones.
Remember when he implied that the 49ers should throw Crabtree into the game after ending his holdout, without any real practice time to get in shape and to adjust? Just to make a point. Of course, then he probably would have been hammered by some headhunting safety and they might have lost their multi-million dollar investment. Real gold there.

K2 is such a loudmouth scumbag he’s taken his once proud daddy with to loudmouth scumbag-land.
Such a great season and NO ONE CARES!

  22. me so horny says: Nov 19, 2009 3:23 PM

Yeah c-towm, it IS a good thing they traded Kellen because the Browns are soooo much better off w/o him right? lol
Whether he has reached his full potential or not..Or gets hurt often, or has a way of just annoying people, the fact is that he’s good. Hes on pace for 10 touchddowns and 80 catches for 1000 yds. On 2 knees that have been operated dozens of times. Just think how good he’d be if he was able to play with the athletic ability he was born with. And you know what, he is probably right that nobody was able to cover him down at Miami. Prob is nobody likes him, so its hard for anyone to want to acknowledge how good he is because it only feeds his already large ego and douchey attitude

  23. Nebster21 says: Nov 19, 2009 3:41 PM

    Me So Horny
your do realize he is playing with the athletic ability he was born with. Bad knees are included in that. Sure he messed them up in a bike accident but that goes with his born gift of being a donkey.

You all can say whatever you want about Winslow. He has been productive and, for the most part, quiet in the media this year. He’s having a great year with no established qb.
I’m sure all of you would love being reminded of a misguided rant that happened while you were in college. By the way, if you ever use the word “trenches” in discussing football, then you have just made the same error as Winslow. People act like K2 is the first guy to talk about football as a metaphor for war. When we all know he isn’t the first and won’t be the last. Hell, last night dumbass Millen kept saying “I asked Jason Taylor, who’d he goto war with? He said ‘he’d goto war with Ronnie Brown, Joey Porter, Musaka Polite. That’s my guy.” So is everyone gonna jump all over Jason Taylor’s ass for it? NO. By the way, even more ridiculous that people are treating Sean Taylor’s name with kid gloves when he was by far a worse example of off-field problems than Winslow ever has been.
