The signs early in the week looked good for Kyle Orton playing in Sunday's crucial AFC West battle.
NFL Network's Mike Lombardi said Orton would play, and the bearded one took his usual place on the podium for his weekly press conference, which is usually a good sign someone is playing.
He hasn't been seen much since. Chris Simms took the first team snaps for the second straight day at Broncos practice Thursday as Orton rested in an attempt to get over his severe ankle sprain.
Josh McDaniels says Simms has benefited from the extra work this week, which is good to hear after he averaged one yard per attempt in the second half against Washington.
Brandon Marshall returned to practice Thursday, as expected, and will start Sunday.
Portrait artists in Denver should start warming up now; Marshall needs something new for his mantel.

Simms has benefited from extra practice.
Wouldn't get much benefit from added distractions related to press conferences.
Let Orton deal with that.
Samething happened with the eagles, kevin kolb looked awful when he came in as relief to mcnabb. Once he got first team reps he looked a lot better
Give the pts.
Simms is horrible.
How many times will he pat the ball when he should be throwing it, then he'll throw it late, trying to make up for his lack of timing by putting some extra mustard on it, making it even more inaccurate, probably sailing to Eric Weddle etc...
In related news, Chris Simms creeps no closer to playing well.
Broncos win 6 then lose 5. Priceless.
This is the start of Brandon Marshall acting like a little bitch because here is where the losing starts.
Only reason hes in the nfl is because of his last name.
Too Broncos have only lost 3 and they won't lose Sunday either!!
