Jim Brown spilled the beans about Mike Holmgren talking to the Browns earlier this week. Owner Randy Lerner stayed tight-lipped about the matter, and it appears Holmgren is following Lerner’s lead. Sort of.
Speaking on 950 KJR in Seattle Friday, Holmgren denied speaking with Lerner. But . . .
“I’d love to talk with Cleveland someday,” Holmgren said.
Florio enumerated the many reasons Holmgren (and Lerner) have to keep discussions quiet. But Holmgren’s obvious interest is newsworthy enough on its own.
As the Tacoma News Tribune points out, the question is whether Holmgren will get offers from elsewhere — including, possibly, a role with the Seahawks.
HA, look what I can do….
Don’t forget about me Buffalo.
“I’d love to talk with Cleveland someday,” Holmgren said.
What in the hell is Lerner waiting for?
Get Holmgren on board and quit wasting time.
No, you wouldn’t.
Why wouldn’t Lerner want to talk to Holmgren? He was such a rousing success as a GM in Seattle. Oops!!!
Which means he most likely has already signed with the Browns. Otherwise Lerner would have just said they haven’t spoke yet. Which he could have done if Jim Brown could keep his loud ass mouth shut.
Don’t forget Green Bay.
It’s the worst situation in the league at this point. If he turned them into a winner, he’d be a legend!
Holmgren would also love to talk to Beth Stern.
Of course Holmgren’s interested in the Browns.
Who wouldn’t be? Oh sure they’ve traded or cut all of their decent players – but there’s a lot of upside to coming in as GM that might make the job very attractive.
After all, you get to fire Mangini!
That alone should create a long list of suitors.
Perhaps Lerner’s smarter than we give him credit for in keeping Mangini on for now.
The only reason for Holmgren to come to the Browns would be to say to the NFL (if successful) “look what I can do”. Not onlt to add to his resume but to go down in history as one of the greatest team builders in history. Cleveland would welcome him with millions of opened arms. If he cannot do it here then that is when Cleveland will lose it’s franchise again, and nothing will keep the name or anything associated with the name in Cleveland.
I’d love to talk to the Browns too if they were willing to pay me millions. I could at least diagnose the problem and trade away cancers on that team. Cut Anderson, Trade Quinn, Trade Cribbs, totally restart. The team is that bad. The browns are about 4 to 5 years away from competing. Thats just sad
CONVERSATION BETWEEN BROWNS AND HOLMGREN:
LERNER: HELLO MIKE, HOW MUCH?
HOLMGREN: $$$$$$$$$$$$$ AND BOTH ARMS AND LEGS!
LERNER: YOUR HIRED! CAN’T BE ANY WORST THAN WHAT I ALREADY HAVE! STAR BY FIRING MINIGENIUS!
Holmgren belongs in the UFL
There’s a reason why they havent talked to Holmgren. Lerner and Parcells came to an agreement at the end of the 2008 season for him to get a position with the Browns. The agreement included a percentage of the equity for Parcells. For some reason, Parcells stayed on with the Dolphins for an additional year – possibly as a favor to transition the Ross ownership group. But he is currently the de facto President of the Cleveland Browns. The Mangini hire was done behind the scenes by Parcells – who instructed Lerner to make the hire as soon as he became available. Parcells has always loved Mangini. Think about it…Lerner is a lot of things, but he is not impulsive. He wouldnt hire someone that quickly without a very good reason. He also would not fire someone as abruptly as he did with Kokinis – but Parcells probably would.
And by love to ” speak” to “Cleveland”, He means “intends” to “eat 9 pies”
CONVERSATION BETWEEN BRONWS AND HOLMGREN:
LERNER: HELLO MIKE, HOW MUCH?
HOLMGREN:$$$$$$$$$$$$$ AND BOTH ARMS AND BOTH LEGS!
LERNER: YOUR HIRED! YOU CAN START BY FIRING MINIGENIUS!
It should also be pointed out that in an interview on the same station on Wednesday Holmgren said that “…in a perfect world…” he would return to the Seahawks, which is his first choice.
Sorry Browns fans.
db
PS – dbs, yeah Holmgren did a terrible job building that Super Bowl team, drafting an MVP running back, a Hall of Fame OG and most of the team.
Can he interview blackface?
Talented Browns players: Josh Cribbs, Joe Thomas, Donte Stallworth, D’Qwell, Shaun Rogers. Possible future stars: Massaquoi, Robiskie.
The Browns have a serviceable defense. The only hole on the Browns is QB. Get a quarterback and the Browns will start to win.
leatherneck…did you say Stallworth?? Who are you?
I can’t see Holmgren coming back here to Seattle as a GM. Even though Ruskell sucks, everyone here remembers how much it was worse with Holmgren. Not saying it’s Holmy’s fault or anything… we love him here, he just wasn’t a great GM in Seattle. Great coach, yes. GM, not so much.
KJR is getting publicity for itself, they know Seattle fans love Holmgren, but they’d be the first to protest hiring him as a GM. They were the most vocal media here calling for his termination as GM back in the day. I think they’re helping him attract suitors. They know there’s no way the Seahawks bring him back. I say go for it, Cleveland! What do you have to lose?? Holmgren is great for franchises and he knows how to build the talent (on offense). I think he’d make a decent GM as long as you don’t let him be the coach too.
They could do a hell of lot worse than Holmgren. In fact, they have been doing a hell of a lot worse.

See his comments above.
____________
Very interesting assessment.
According to my recollection of Parcells agreement with Miami he can walk at anytime and receive payment in full for the remainder of his contract.
Time will tell if you’re correct.
That would be a godsend for Cleveland if it comes to fruition.
Strikes me as spin to entice other teams to make serious plays at him. Cleveland’s already made their intentions clear.
“I’d love to talk with Cleveland someday,” Holmgren said.
Shortly thereafter Mike entered a drug rehab facility.

NOW THATS A CONSPIRARY THEORIST!
ESPN or NFL Network ought to hire the Big Luna, with all his credible sources and concrete facts to report. PFFFF….
dbara43 – He did such a great job as a GM that the owner stripped him of the duties!!! Open your eyes and don’t be such a homer. At least Dave the Dude is realistic. But I bet you think the refs cost the Hawks the Super Bowl.
