Oher hasn't seen movie about himself

I’ve got mixed feelings whenever I see a trailer for The Blind Side, the movie about Ravens tackle Michael Oher’s which opens today.

In the movie’s favor: It was an excellent book and Oher’s life story is one worth telling.  It’s about football and I’ll see most anything about football that doesn’t involve Keanu Reeves.

Then again, it risks being a typically manipulative Hollywood product that tries to appeal to the broadest audience without appealing to actual football fans. And Sandra Bullock’s accent sounds frightening.

Oher may also have mixed feelings, for different reasons.  He hasn’t even seen the movie, which isn’t a huge shock after learning about his personality.

His adoptive mother Leigh Anne Tuohy said this week, “When Michael is getting prepared to play a football game, the movie is not the foremost thing on his mind.”

“Michael is playing football. He is not going to movie premieres, he is
not going to movie theaters. He is not going anywhere,” his adoptive father Sean Tuohy said. “And we respect that and we would hope other people would respect that.”

I certainly do and think it’s a sane approach to an insane situation for the 23-year-old rookie.

Oher has bigger things to worry about: Robert Mathis is coming to town Sunday.

Come on Rosenthal. The Replacements was one of the all time funniest football movies ever!

He doesn’t need to see the movie. He lived it.
    I’m a Michael Oher fan.

    Gregg,
But what about Point Break? Keanu and only a little bit about football. A cinematic masterpiece.

I wonder if the Tuohy’s we’ll even see the movie since they take a gratuitous shot at W. Tuohy’s are described as Christian conservatives so they can’t be too happy that Hollywood used their story to bash a fellow Christian conservative, probably someone they voted for. Man, Hollywood just can’t keep out of its own way.

I read the book and there are really good parts. I have tremendous respect for Michael Lewis, but this movie and book miss the mark.
This is a story about human trafficking and I for one will not be seeing it.
Check out the book and you will see what I mean.

  11. sodaknick says: Nov 20, 2009 9:54 AM

I read the book and I’m going to see the movie tonight. Honestly, the fact that it deals with football is almost an aside. The story is such a great one that I don’t care what sport or activity it involves (but it is nice that it happens to be football). There are a lot of real lessons in Michael Oher’s life so far.

  12. JDeezy says: Nov 20, 2009 9:58 AM

Sundra Bullock deserves 1000 Oscars for her performance. This movie is probably the best movie of all time. It looks so good! It should win an MTV award. Sandra Bullock takes my breath away. The Blind Side is so kool!

  13. Cmoney20 says: Nov 20, 2009 10:00 AM

The part where Sandy Bullock is out on the field and she says “This is your family now”, makes me literally throw up in my lap everytime I see it.

I get the feeling that he isn’t the sweet and clean cut boy the media is making him out to be. He obviously likes to run his mouth after Jared Allen pwned him. This movie will be all fluff, not Oher’s fault of course, but Hollywood’s. Not to say the guy hasn’t had a tough road but come on man, the guy lacks humbleness from what I’ve seen of him so far. His plays been good for a rookie, but not eye popping. Lineman get little pub, so I guess he feels he must take advantage of every op to run his mouth to get his rep points up, a la Deangelo “BURNT TOAST” Hall.

I’ve seen monkey shit fights at the zoo that are more organized than this!
2 great quotes from the movie.
Reeves is a horrible actor though.

  18. jamaltimore says: Nov 20, 2009 10:22 AM

forget sandy, Michael’s step sisters are in real life are HOT! He’s a been a beast so far for the Ravens. Hope this movie doesn’t drive him crazy.

I loved Oher’s story and loved the book – I am planning on seeing the movie, but I expect to be disappointed. Hopefully I am wrong, but Oher’s story and (and the Tuohy’s as well) is an amazing story – it doesn’t need to be changed. Reading the book, often times i felt like if this was in a movie, I wouldn’t believe it. I really hope they don’t change things too much. And maybe they won’t and i will be pleasantly surprised.

  23. Youngone says: Nov 20, 2009 10:33 AM

Replacements was good movie Rosenthal, don’t just bash the movie to bash Keanu. Whoa!

  24. wrath4771 says: Nov 20, 2009 10:37 AM

Wow! When a Vikings fan says someone lacks humbleness…
Keanu’s best football movie is Point Break – he played a former football player and we didn’t have to see him play football. That is two wins right there.

  25. shinsnake says: Nov 20, 2009 10:38 AM

I loved The Replacements. I still crack up when Jamal’s like, “We got jokes, oh, we got jokes?” Then he shoots up Martell’s car. Clifford Franklin with the stickem was hilarious too, “Now coach you know this don’t look natural. I look like I just jerked off an elephant!”
Man, that stuff never gets old…

  26. mattitude says: Nov 20, 2009 10:38 AM

    @ Moose SkyWay
Haha. Point Break is one of my all time guilty pleasures because of gems like these:
Johnny Utah: Bohdi! This is your wakeup call I AM AN F… B… I AGENT!
Johnny Utah: You’re sayin’ the FBI’s gonna pay me to learn to surf?
    Classic.

  27. CaptainFantastik says: Nov 20, 2009 10:38 AM

Hey now I won’t hear anything negative said about Keanu. His delivery in Point Break provided a goldmine of great quotes. “Hey……my name’s Johnny Utaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!”

  28. Kevin from Philly says: Nov 20, 2009 10:42 AM

Hey, “The Replacements” sucked, but it’s nowhere NEAR as bad as the one with Kathy Ireland and the guy from Quantum Leap.

  29. illspaz says: Nov 20, 2009 10:50 AM

    @bluenoser:
if by human trafficking, you mean finding someone from the gutter whose life is going nowhere, redirecting it to something educational and beneficial and giving them a home and a family, then yes, it’s human trafficking.
i assume you think foster homes are evil, then?
and i know what these already multi-millionaire tuohys were thinking: hey, let’s let this giant, scary looking black guy from the inner city live with us and our teenage daughter for several years, maybe if he ever makes it we can get a small piece of his NFL signing bonus! think about the movie deal! that’s totally worth it!

  30. JoeSchmoe says: Nov 20, 2009 10:51 AM

MTV awards? JDeezy, we now know you are 18 years old max. And typically anything that I recall winning MTV awards when I watched MTV…. roughly 12 years ago, was straight ass.

  31. Storm says: Nov 20, 2009 10:54 AM

    @bluenose
    Human Trafficking?
WTF are you talking about? You’re nuts!

  32. dcfan-1212450 says: Nov 20, 2009 10:57 AM

“Coach, I look like i just jacked off an elephant.”
And cmon, nothing beats the scene where the stripper cheerleaders distract the opposing team.
Keanu Reeves bad, Replacements though was funny.
And why did they even release this movie during the football season. Didn’t anyone forsee that as a possible distraction as the Ravens fight for a playoff spot. Really stupid.

  33. rambisdude says: Nov 20, 2009 11:01 AM

Oher hasn’t read the book either.

  34. The Coop says: Nov 20, 2009 11:22 AM

If you’re paying attention to Sandra Bullock’s accent, then you need to re-evaluate your priorities.

  35. CanadianVikingFan says: Nov 20, 2009 11:37 AM

    I’d still tap Sandra Bullock

  36. severs28 says: Nov 20, 2009 12:02 PM

He also said he has never read the book. But I would attribute that to the fact that he probably cannot read.

  37. speedy1383 says: Nov 20, 2009 12:03 PM

Thought the movie was good. It does touch on some of the things that Oher had to live through and his situation. It doesn’t get too downbeat though. I thought it was an uplifting film. In the epilogue they showed what happened to a lot of the people in Michael’s neighborhood. Many of them ended up in prison or dead. So Michael was very very lucky that he got out when he did. I don’t get the human trafficking comment at all. Sure the Tuohys steered him toward Ole Miss, but I don’t think they manipulated him or did him wrong. The NCAA scene in the film was the only thing that felt false to me. I highly doubt that happened.

  38. speedy1383 says: Nov 20, 2009 12:07 PM

I just read some of his story. I guess the NCAA did look into it some. But the movie didn’t say anything about the high school coach getting a job at UM. Now it makes it more sense about the investigation. The movie made it seem like the NCAA was concerned about wealthy boosters adopting poor athletes and steering them toward their alma mater. That is just plain stupid.

  39. bluenoser says: Nov 20, 2009 12:10 PM

    @illspaz
Nothing to do with $$…they have tonnes already.
All about maintaining Top Dog status at Ole Miss. And to rich people appearances is VERY important.
There have been a lot of investigations into this type of stuff already at the college level.
Don’t take my word for it. Read the book (the movie will not be the same) and make your own opinions. Mine will not change despite being in the minority. But, that doesn’t make me wrong.
and PS – Michael Oher is one very smart guy…I don;t know who used who.

  40. CharmCityRavens says: Nov 20, 2009 12:35 PM

The Blind Side will be 100x better than Sinbad’s “Unnecessary Roughness” and “The Replacements”.
I can’t believe some people here found that movie funny. That movie stunk, the only good thing about it was the stadium they chose to shoot at (what is now M&T)!
    Oher is the man.

  41. Chickenfoot says: Nov 20, 2009 12:41 PM

Sandra Bullock has man hands and man feet.
    I’m disgusted by her.
I might give her a Hot Carl though.

    Neither did Brian Piccolo.

  46. newman says: Nov 21, 2009 7:47 AM

actually, the movie DID mention the fact that the high school coach got a gig at ole miss. and the movie doesn’t duck the accusations of what was termed “human trafficking”, but faces them head on. it was an amazing movie, far exceeding any expectations i might have had. and i feel sorry for those of you so skeptical that you can’t believe a person would do something simply because its the right thing to do – that actions can be motivated purely by love.
