Favre rears his head in Iraq, sort of

I was checking out the new Out Of Bounds blog on NBCSports.com, and I noticed a football story there.

We’re generally not territorial — except when someone pisses on the tree where I typically do my pissing.  So I didn’t mind seeing a football story there, especially since we had missed it here.

And here’s the story

Apparently, some of the American service men and women in Iraq began decorating their camp in Packers colors.  And some of their Iraqi prisoners know enough about football to realize that using the word “Favre” is the verbal equivalent of removing a large scab with fresh sandpaper and then cleaning the wound with ethanol and sea salt.

At least the prisoners haven’t started calling the Green Bay offensive line “Baby Swiss.”

Yet.

Terrorists and Vikings fans are very similar.

  3. SmackMyVickUp says: Nov 21, 2009 12:30 AM

Better headline would have been “Favre Supports Terrorism” or “Terrorists Idolize Favre” that would bring the Viqueer supporters out of the woods.

Isn’t it past your bedtime Forio? Friday past 9:30 is a stretch for you, no? It’s easy to see that the only people who really love the packers are people that are either:
    A: Locals
    B: Ex- or current employees
    and of course everyone’s favorite!
C: Shareholders\stockholders, whatever your stupid redneck ass thinks it is.
    Purple rain or Purple reign?

    Dumb dumb story.

  6. just_a_cigar says: Nov 21, 2009 12:46 AM

The only Packer fans who still hold grudges are the braindead morons who know nothing about football.
Favre moved on because the Packers didn’t want him, and they clearly made a good choice beacause Rodgers might be one of the next great QBs, and they may have lost him if they had kept Favre any longer.
It was best for everyone, and even though the Vikings are kicking butt know, Rodgers will be a great QB long after Favre is gone.
Just get over it, appericiate that Favre basically saved your franchise, remember the good times, wish the icon the best and root for A-Rod.
If you do anything else, you obviously don’t have a clue.

  7. TheBeave says: Nov 21, 2009 12:54 AM

Vikings fans should start chanting “Favre Akbar” when they make the playoffs and Green Bay is sitting at home on the couch.

  8. frank booth says: Nov 21, 2009 1:21 AM

There are probably a lot of similarities between Viking fans and Iraqi prisoners, except that the Iraqi’s are better educated, more knowledgeable about football, and smell better than the Viking fans.

  9. UnsportsmanlikeConduct says: Nov 21, 2009 1:23 AM

You know, a Favre bomb sort of flies like a SCUD missile too. Just more accurate.

  10. Johnny Ryall says: Nov 21, 2009 1:38 AM

Heard that on Barreiro yesterday… that has to be a bunk or overblown story. Throw Favre’s name into any story and you guys latch on no matter how ridiculous. Any of you “bloggers” care to actually verify it. I’ll believe it then.

  11. ScottThompson1982 says: Nov 21, 2009 1:41 AM

Someone needs to bring these prisoners upto date. If they really want to offend the Guards from Wisconsin they could holler ” Thompson ” or ” McLardy” or even ” Florio “

  19. George C says: Nov 21, 2009 6:24 AM

Shanahan has a better chance of success than Gruden. With Shanny, Buffalo will get a proven QB/offensive line and running back comittment. With all due respect to Gruden, this team needs a new foundation which will ultimately build a winner. I think Shanny brings that. Fire and brimstone doesn’t produce wins, just ask the Jets..
In Buffalo, Shanny will get his wish of control, along with the most fan support ever seen. If you build a winner, there is no place on Earth to have more support than Buffalo.

Terrorists love Favre. No surprise here.
Hey Florio, how much longer are you going to do the whole “push the nickname ‘baby swiss’ until it catches on” thing? It’s lame. No one is using it besides you.
You just don’t have the hip-football-nickname-trend starting thing like Kissing Suzy Kolber (Neckbeard, LaToeInjury, etc.).

  24. JimmySmith says: Nov 21, 2009 8:07 AM

It make senses that the Iraqi prisoners would behave in a similar fashion to the Viking fans, neither bathe on a daily basis, comprehend the nuances of pro football, and both think the Packer fans actually give a shit about Mr. Waffle. The key difference is that the Iraqi prisoners will not feel emotionally devastated when Favre and the Vikings pull their annual choke job in the playoffs

The guards should just threaten to send the taunting prisoners to live in Wisconsin with the motto “Wisconsin: where we don’t have Sadam but we do have Sodomy” — that’d be enough to scare anyone. Though, JimmySmith would probably sign up that — as long as he could get Childress’ flight attendant outfit.

  29. KeithRK says: Nov 21, 2009 9:39 AM

In other words, Packer Fans being Packer Fans (even in the National Guard). They couldn’t help but make sure that everyone knows they are Packer Fans, even overseas. Did they mention they’re Packer Fans?
So much so that they managed to irritate the detainees to the point where even they are throwing Favre back in the Pack Fans faces.
    Classic.

  30. Twiz says: Nov 21, 2009 9:59 AM

Of course Lord Florio left parts out of the actual story……..
It was members of the Wisconson Nat’l guard that posted Green Bay Packer stuff. Taunting them about Favre was the prisoners way of trying to get under their skin.
Original story can be found here.

If you really want to scare the shit of them, threaten to send them to Minnesota when the competition for goats and stray sheep would immediately double. But at least the prisoners have the common sense not to expect the goats to wear lipstick. (or the Vikings to actually make the Superbowl)

While it’s true that the Vikes are still looking for their first Super Bowl win, most of the Pack’s “success” borders on ancient history. How many titles have the Curdheads won in the last 40 years w/out Favre?
BTW, did y’all see the photo on the Star-Tribune website of the two Viking fans walking into Lambeau Field on the day of the Nov. 1 ass-whooping? One fan is wearing a Viking jersey with Starr and No. 15 on the back; the other is wearing a Viking jersey with Nitschke and No. 66 on the back. Hilarious.

  39. purpleguy says: Nov 21, 2009 11:49 AM

Huh, a bunch of prisoners in a position which is hopeless, and likely to be hopeless for years, attempting to taunt a superior foe to make themselves feel better. Why does that somehow ring a bell whenever I read these comments?

Rear Echelon Troops at their finest. I used to see this all the time over there, a bunch of soft clowns focused on making Iraq look like home instead of maintaning a constant state of suspicious alertness, which affords you the luxury of leaving that Godforsaken sh*thole alive. I hope somebody gets that unit squared away before their unprofessionalism gets somebody killed. This mentality can spread through a unit, especially a reserve unit, like the flu.

Granted he pissed off alot of Packer fans but when he is done with the Vikes he will be loved again….

  45. SFrancis1680 says: Nov 21, 2009 1:29 PM

Florio, do you feel an obligation to do a Farve story, not matter how stupid the story is? Are you in competition with ESPN and the NFL Network to see who can do the most Farve stories? The guy is enough of a self centered primma donna without feeding his ego, by mentioning him in a crap ass story like this.

  46. rockotica says: Nov 21, 2009 1:33 PM

iraqi “prisoners”; thats hilarious. 6 years ago, they were citizens of their own country. now, bc they have the audacity to fight back against and challenge their occupiers, they are terrorists/insurgents who have been put in prison. if some1 somehow tried to “liberate” some state in the US, those who fought back [rightfully so] would be called heros and patriots. american propaganda is so wonderful!

    Well DC
This is the 2nd time I’m postin this so my apologies if it’s a repeat:
I am no hypocrite nor dumbass. I call out JimmySmith & BobNelson all the time. Makes no sense to me people getting on here and just talking pure bullshit about cities, citizens & fanbases. Would you talk to people like that if you were face to face with them? Hell no. ‘Cause you’d be dead. Useless Bullshit.
Go back to some other threads, you’ll find one where I agreed with everything you said because you were talking football–not bullshit. No Sadam but sodomy? I thought it was MN that just did some gay thing. There’s others too, Fan_of Favre comes to mind but I try not to pick on her too much. I mean, she’s just defenseless.
Not that you should give a rats ass about what I think….

That’s not it at all. Didn’t you hear? Rumor has it that Childress, after having much success both winning and upsetting Pack fans with Favre, had expressed interest in signing Starr, Hornung, and Nitschke as well.
He said he was planning to take the long-standing Viking policy of getting every ex-Packer available “to a new level” by bringing in players already in the Hall of Fame.
Sadly, Nitschke is no longer with us, but this is Childress here, after all. It will probably take him quite a while to figure that out. Plus, he’s been very busy sewing up his new cheerleader costume, which he intends to wear to motivate his players for this week’s game. That takes precedence over everything else, of course.
