In an e-mail message sent Friday to the members of the team’s season-ticket waiting list (which will need to be given a different name if all of those waiting for season tickets have rejected the opportunity to, you know, actually buy them), the Giants claim that they are close to selling out the remaining Personal Seat Licenses that will apply in their new home.
The new Giants Stadium opens in 2010.
The e-mail message says that there are “only about 500 new accounts away from selling out.” But there’s a difference between “accounts” and “total number of these PSL things we still need to move.” Per the e-mail, all non-Club (i.e., “reasonably affordable”) tickets and PSLs have sold out, leaving roughly 2,600 of the most expensive seats in the house available for even more expensive PSLs.
The e-mail claims that the existing 20,800 accounts have purchased 75,000 PSLs.
Meanwhile, there’s a slim chance that all the PSL revenue might have to eventually be refunded. On Friday, news emerged that earlier this month a judge refused to fully dismiss a class-action lawsuit attacking the efforts of the Giants and Jets to sell Personal Seat Licenses. Though three of the legal claims — antitrust, consumer fraud, and unjust enrichment — were scuttled, a claim for breach of contract has been permitted to continue, for now, through the litigation process.
“We’re trying to prove that the season-ticket holders had a right to
renew that was essentially taken away from them without any compensation,” said the lawyer for the man who brought the lawsuit. “They’ve
stopped allowing you to renew unless you buy a Personal Seat License.”
As explained by Ken Belson of the New York Times (we recommend buying Saturday’s edition), the judge has decided to give the plaintiff an opportunity to obtain through the pre-trial discovery process information regarding the possible existence of renewal rights that might have been breached via imposition of a PSL. In the end, there might not be enough evidence to prove the existence of contractual rights. Until then, however, the Giants and Jets will be spending some of that money paying a team of lawyers to defend the program, likely at rates of $500 per hour and higher.
And it would be a real hoot if the law firms also require the teams to purchase on a lump-sum basis the privilege of hiring the lawyers in the first place. It could be called a Personal Shark License.
Thank you very much. I’m here all week. And the next week. And the next. And so on.
PSL’s are nothing more than a big, giant rectum right in the face of the fan. Anytime you hear about ownership “thinking’ of it’s fans, think of PSL’s. It’s gouging, plain and simple.
I cant believe anyone would shell out the money for a PSL. Its things like this that are making it impossable for a everyday Joe to take his family to a game.
Gints should hire cheaper lawyers, You weren’t available Florio?
question: do season ticket holders have a renewal right or a right of first refusal? seems like it might be the latter.
When does the NFL money grab hit the wall? PSLs are a form of robbery. It’s hard enough for Joe Sixpack to afford to take his family to a game, but with the advent of the PSL, the cost of going to a game (much less being a season ticket holder) is completely out of hand. Here in Arizona, my lower deck tickets are “only” $72.50/game, and my parking pass is free in the “blue” lot. Even that reasonable price is up 40% since 2006. But compared to New York, it’s a pittance. NFL ticket prices can’t keep rising at the rate they are forever. How many Escalades and mansions do these guys need to be able to get by? Sheesh!
Florio, you demoing your stand up so Larry David puts you on the next Curbed episode with Seinfeld on it?
How could anyone have a right to a seat in a new location
They did not take the old place and sell PSL they did it in the new location.
Do people really think they have a right to tell a business what they can charge.
The owners built the place so they can charge what ever the market can bare.
The Giants and Jets owners are guess what in business to make money this is what they do for a living.
Are the UAW going to take large pay cuts so I can buy a car at a lower price? Will the plumber take less to install a hottub for me ? If not can I sue the plumber or UAW?
The folks that are upset are the whores who have held onto tickets for many years and sold them at prices above what the Giants are charging for seats in the new place.
I am a club seat PSL owner and to thoughs of you who cant afford it watch the game on TV for those of you who have made your living off selling the tickets on stub hub or any place else get a job.
Go on line see what tickets are going for in the after market why shouldnt the teams make the money instead of some low life thief
I have been paying marked up pricing for years when I did the math after 3 years I will be saving money with the PSL fee and the higher ticket prices and the money is going to the business of football not some ahole living in Fla who never went to the games.
One last thought its called supply and demand
And by the sound of things the demand is going to surpass the supply
PSLs are bullshit. It’s a way of forcing you to pay twice for the same product, which is a seat at a football game.
Consumers are treated so poorly it’s almost criminal. If only most of us were smarter and more disciplined, and didn’t always chase the carrot that big business hangs in front of us on a daily basis.
When they close the old place maybe they can give out boxes of klenex to all the cry babys who will not be in the new place.
Love my PSL my great seats my club access and the rest of the benifits that I will have as a Club PSL owner.
And the best part is I can write it off as part of my business.
I see no one mentions all the jobs that were part of this building project I would guess more jobs were created by this then that package that came out of DC and these jobs were done the old fashion way private sector not federal funds but three families that put it on the line to build the place.
I work hard for my money and I spend it as I see fit the cost of two seats in the home of the NFC best is well worth it would have paid double to not have the JETS there
Funny thing I took the time to read the Times and see that the guy with the suit lives in Fla and has tickets to both the Jets and the Giants does he spend 16 weeks in the Meadowlands or does he use the tickets to underwrite his SSI?
Most people from this area go South when it gets cold does this guy come north?
Go online one of the poor poor fans is trying to sell his I have a right to own tickets for $5,000 a pop face value is around $125.00.
So I feel very sorry for these folks who can no longer get rich of the backs of the owners I am thrilled to use my AMEX to pay for the right to own my seat and and watch my Giants for years to come.
And the best part is when we get that ahole out of the white house and the country is back on its feet my PSL will be worth 5 to 10 times what I paid for it.
If you dont buy a seat look for me on TV I will be the guy in the Club Seat smiling
@bigbluefan: ..look for me on TV I will be the guy in the Club Seat smiling
Not too smug are we? I feel sorry for you, you represent everything that’s wrong in this country.
Those of us who paid for the PSLs made a free choice. Ultimately, we helped to pay for a stadium that cost more than any other stadium in the country.
Our $1.6 BILLION is what it cost to build BOTH the new Cowboys stadium and the stadium we won XLII in (which is identical to ours except that it has a retractable dome and switchable grass/turf fields).
The real questions are what will we get for our contribution?
Will the bazillion dollar replay screens actually be used to show replays?
Will the bazillion dollar sound system be able to handle an announcer with more than a five word vocabulary? (Dropped, Stopped, Downed, Tackled and Spilled)
In short, will we FINALLY get for our money what millions of Americans get for free on TV?
Wow, what a stuck up arrogant prick. Look at me! I have money! Watch me brag about it on the internet like a total fool! I’m a better person than you because I can overpay by thousands of dollars for 8 football games a year! Everyone that’s not me is low life scum who aren’t fit to clean my shoes! Finally, all the lower class peons won’t have to burn my retina by being in the same stadium as me! Rabble rabble rabble! I am all that is man! Raawwrr! Next year I’ll just pay $3 million per game to be the only fan in the stadium, because I am so awesome and special and you’re a thief and a bum for trying to enjoy MY FOOTBALL TEAM AND MY STADIUM! THIEF! I just use my business to pay for the tickets and write it off because I’m legitimate and NOT A THIEF OR A FRAUD!
It’s not going to be called Giants Stadium,
Hey Easy I will take clients to the games so I have the right to write it off.
With all the money I give to the goverment excuse me if I take advantage of one of the few deductions I am allowed
And never once did I call anyone low class I said that I have over paid for tickets for years via stubhub or other 3rd party brokers.
I enjoy my time at the games with the fans I hate paying the thiefs 5 times the face value for a ticket I would rather pay it to the Maras then some a hole in Fla whos great grandfather had the tickets so they hold on to them break the law and sell them over and above the legal markup
All the PSL’s did was level the feild for those of us who have been over paying for years. Now the money goes to the team not someone who is in it only for a fast buck
And yes I am stuck up arroant and a prick not over paying for anything paying the going rate for a change
Yes I can afford it why because I am up at 4 am getting ready to work not waiting for someone to hand me something.
If you can find someone to read my post my rant is about all the idiots who hog tickets and never go to game those are the folks who have been getting rich off the Giants tickets for years they are now the one bitching about the PSL’s and the higher ticket prices. Let the owners get rich instead its there team they built the place let them make the money that is what this country is all about or it used to be.
And if that suit is won you may all find out my name for I will be sueing to keep my PSL’s and pay someone to track down all the scalpers that hold fans hostage every sunday
