Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been asked many times this season whether head coach Wade Phillips will be back in 2010.
And Jones has answered many times that he won’t commit to bringing Phillips back.
Phillips’ contract gives Jones the option of picking him up for another year at the end of this season or of letting him go, and Jones has decided to wait until the season is over to determine whether he’s going to exercise that option. And although that doesn’t give Phillips much job security, Phillips says he’s fine with that — because Phillips says he knows from experience with the Broncos and Bills that no football coach ever really has any job security.
“That’s the way I’ve always coached,” Phillips said, per Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Star Telegram. “Way back when we were 10-6, 10-6, 11-5 and went to two AFC Championship Games and we got fired, I realized that, hey, you can do a great job and for whatever reason, you can be gone.
“So I stopped worrying about all that and worry about coaching, trying to do the best I can do to help the team win. That’s all I really think about.”
Phillips was 7-9 the year he got fired in Denver and 8-8 the year he got fired in Buffalo, but whatever his regular season accomplishments, he’ll likely be judged in Dallas based on what he does in the postseason. The Cowboys are in first place in the NFC East, but they haven’t won a playoff game since 1996, and if they don’t win a playoff game after this season, Jones may be in the mood to make a change.
Phillips, however, says he’s not thinking about that
“I have confidence in myself as a coach,” Phillips said. “I think I can do a good job, and I think I can help the team do better. Whatever it is, my record shows that. Everywhere I’ve been we’ve won.”
“Everywhere I’ve been we’ve won.”
With the notable exception of the postseason, of course.
Bum’s son is gone, period.
Atta boy, Wade!
He stopped thinking about it long ago when he realized he wasn’t getting one.
“Everywhere I’ve been we’ve won.”
Um….”won?” Last I checked, he’s got zero rings “everywhere” he’s been. Maybe this is the problem. Maybe Wade doesn’t realized the owner wants him to “win” games that matter, instead of whatever he’s “won” so far.
What a f-king moron.
Maybe the owner should ust hire a GM and Get the F out of the way.
They haven’t won a playoff game since 1996.
That’s when the Olympics were in Atlanta right?
Everything has changed except the ownership… and the losing.
No way Shanahan, Gruden, Holmgren etc come to Dallas without full football authority
Wade about to lose at home tomorrow. Wooo
Wade Phillips after the Broncos got drilled something like 45-10 by the Raiders at home: “I’m not concerned, I think everybody knows we won the second half.” (not his exact words probably, but close enough) Too bad it was 38-0 at halftime, and the Mile High crowd pelted him and his team with debris as they went into the old south stands locker room. Back in those days, before Broncos fans grew a lofty sense of entitlement and got all flighty and inept like you see now, that was twilight zone stuff; to see the faithful lose their minds like that.
I remain stunned that Phillips was ever given the reigns of a team again…much less twice.
Wade Phillips is not the problem. The problem with the Cowboys is the man with the lifted face that thinks he is a GM.
Wade, do us fans a favor and shut up. Just say “no comment” from here on.
While I think Wade is an ass he is stuck JJ runs the team JJ should just cut the crap and coach them himself
yeah right! the sorry ass redskins wont beat the cowboys.
I would say it’s 50/50 right now as whether Phillips comes back or not, but if he doesn’t, don’t be surprised when Jones stays in-house and promotes Jason Garrett. Jones has a long history of being loyal to, and hiring those he likes–see Dave Campo and Barry Switzer. It’s just part of who he is.
It’s too bad since he’s a real good defensive coordinator and essentially that’s all he is right now anyway. Some coaches just never give up the hard-on for a head coaching position when they’re clearly made to be coordinators….see Turner,Norvell & Nolan, Mike.
Wow, you’d think that he doesn’t know how to manage the clock and is on a four game losing streak or something.
Unlike most of us Wade has never had to get a day job, now he is old enough to ride off into the sunset a real Cowboy “who me worry”
VoxVeritas says: “Wow, you’d think that he doesn’t know how to manage the clock and is on a four game losing streak or something.”
The reality is Wade IS on a four game losing streak. He’s 0-4 in the postseason. 1996 douche.
“The Cowboys are in first place in the NFC East, but they haven’t won a playoff game since 1996″
Wade will change all that this year, his head coaching record in the playoffs is second to none:
Denver, 1993: 0 wins – 1 loss
Buffalo, 1998: 0 wins – 1 loss
Buffalo, 1998: 0 wins – 1 loss
Dallas, 2007: 0 wins – 1 loss
Ok, maybe instead of second to none, it should be just none.
Fire Phillips?
He only does what Jerry tell him to do.
