The Detroit Lions weren’t exactly stocked with talent when training camp opened this summer, but the level has steadily dropped thanks to injury after injury.
Right guard Stephen Peterman is the latest casualty. On Friday, Peterman became the 12th player placed on injured reserve since the start of training camp, and the third in the last four days. He injured his ankle during last Sunday’s loss to the Vikings and coach Jim Schwartz said it looks like he’ll need surgery.
“That’s going to be something that we’re going to have to overcome,”
Schwartz said. “We’re going to need those other guys to step up and be
more consistent, because that’s what Stephen gave us. He gave us a rock
over there at right guard.”
Daniel Loper, who has been rotating with Manny Ramirez at left guard, will likely move over to take Peterman’s place in the starting lineup. They’ve also had tackle Jon Jansen playing some guard and signed veteran offensive lineman Melvin Fowler earlier this week when cornerback Jack Williams was ruled out for the season.
The Lions promoted wide receiver Eric Fowler from the practice squad to take Peterman’s spot on the roster.
They should buy Peterman an urban sombrero.
That should cheer him up.
The Lions’ “12th man” has been on IR all year long, that’s why I have to watch their games online.
