Trestman's name surfaces in connection with the Raiders

Eyebrows were raised this week when word surfaced that Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman has landed on the early list for the coaching vacancy in Buffalo.

The fact that Trestman's name is churning in the Raiders rumor mill is less surprising.

Trestman spent three years with the Raiders, first as quarterbacks coach in 2001 and then as offensive coordinator in 2002 and 2003.  In his first season as offensive coordinator, the Raiders made it to the Super Bowl.

Trestman next served as quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins in 2004, and then as offensive offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at North Carolina State in 2005-06.  For the past three years, Trestman has coached the Alouettes.

This year, Trestman's team has won 15 and lost only three.  On Sunday, the Alouettes host the B.C. Lions in the CFL's East Division final.  (We're not sure why the B.C. Lions would be in the "East Division" of any football league other than one headquartered in Russia.)

And though Trestman is better known (relatively speaking) than Lane Kiffin or Tom Cable when each became head coach of the Raiders, Trestman fits the "no other NFL options" profile that owner Al Davis currently applies when hiring head coaches, since men with other NFL options will opt not to coach the Raiders.

the BC lions are in the east division because there is a crossover rule in the cfl where if the worst team in the west is better than the third place team in the east they takeover there spot in the east division playoff picture

I dont care if Superman is on the shortlist. The raiders are doomed to fail for at least another year

  3. JSpicoli says: November 21, 2009 2:26 PM

Says you. Cite proof that "no one with options will work in OAK" Other than the hyperbolic mediot stereotyping.

I personally like to buy stocks low, and coming to resurrect the Raiders has huge upside, see Gruden.

Florio's opinion and 2 bucks will get you a bottle of wine at Trader Joes.

How's that Redskin thing doing there Mikey?

No coach that has any sense should ever take the position of head coach of the Raiders while Al Davis is still alive. We all know Al Davis is the reason that team has become a mockery and a joke of what it once was. His senility has destroyed that team. I hate to say this about anyone, but until the day he days that team will remain in shambles.

  6. slutnuts says: November 21, 2009 2:28 PM

as big a joke as the CFL is, they at least do one thing right. that is putting the teams with the best records in the playoffs. the b.c. lions finished 4th in their division, and had a better record than the 3rd place team in the east, so they were placed in the east side of the playoffs. having beat hamilton on the road, they moved on to the east final.

this CFL wrapup brought to you by wendy's. proud sponsor of wendy's friday night football.

  7. maxl49 says: November 21, 2009 2:28 PM

In the CFL the 4th team of both divisions can make the playoffs in the other division if they have a better record than the 3rd team. That's why Lions are playing in the east this post-season.

  8. Rdowb says: November 21, 2009 2:30 PM

BC is in the East division because of the crossover rule. If the fourth place team in the West has a better record than the third place team in the East, the West team plays in the East Division playoff. Duh.

  9. johnwhodey says: November 21, 2009 2:31 PM

How doe he fit the no other NFL options profile if he has already landed on another team's short list?

  10. JohnnyBuc says: November 21, 2009 2:32 PM

The reason why B.C. is in the East final is because the CFL has a "crossover rule" where if the fourth place team in one division (4th place normally do not make the playoffs) has a better record than the 3rd place team in the other division, then that 4th place team gets the playoff spot in the other division. This insures that the teams with the best records get into the playoffs when one division is significantly weaker than the other. This year, the B.C. Lions finished 4th in the West division, but had a better record than the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who finished 3rd in the East division.

Churning in the Raiders' rumor mill? What does that mean? Where is your source?

We know Trestman is connected to the Raiders, but how is his name connected to them concerning a coaching change?

Sounds like your throwing crap against the wall Florio.

  12. JC says: November 21, 2009 2:37 PM

B.C is in the west division.. the playoffs can go cross-divisional..

  13. Garbanzo says: November 21, 2009 2:42 PM

Only a very, very stupid person would take the Raiders head coaching job. You interested Florio?

  14. RIDERPRIDE says: November 21, 2009 2:42 PM

In the CFL, there is a crossover so that the top six teams always make the playoffs. This year, BC finished fourth in the west but above the third place team in the east.

  15. IWanttoPunchFloriointheFace says: November 21, 2009 3:01 PM

All you Raider bashers would wet yourself if you were asked to coach the Raiders and make seven figures...so just shut the hell up already (that includes you, Flowerio). There are many coaches out there who respect AD and would take the job.

  16. exit322 says: November 21, 2009 3:04 PM

Perhaps Trestman can bring Anthony Calvillo with him. Sure, he's old, but he can at least throw the football, unlike the QBs on the Raiders roster currently.

  17. briscodog says: November 21, 2009 3:10 PM

  18. wintertonka says: November 21, 2009 3:20 PM

Hey you guys, I think there might be a crossover rule in the CFL, you guys.

  19. snnyjcbs says: November 21, 2009 3:21 PM

You guys love to throw stuff at the wall in the hopes it will stick.

This is just more BS to add to the long list of claims that you have made with regards to some inside type of scoop regarding the Raiders that turns out to be pure bull.

With regards to the dude you bring up, when he was with the 49ers in Bill Walshes later days he was very good at what he did. He also lifted the Raiders offense to one of the all time high powered offenses in the history of the NFL.

My point, he is much more qualified to be a coach in the NFL than you are to write about it.

After years of stomping most we were bound to fall on tough times....We'll be back.

And for you 20 somethings out there...

There was life and football before you were born.

For MANY, MANY years the Pats* sucked...
    We all take turns.

You were still in the sac for that.
    You'll understand one day.

  21. BornSlippy says: November 21, 2009 3:35 PM

Trestman seems like a good option to get the Patriots #1 overall pick in 2011.

  22. TheVelvetHammer says: November 21, 2009 4:35 PM

Go Lions! Still can't figure out why they are playing for the eastern conference championship, anyone know why?

  23. FireJerryJones says: November 21, 2009 4:56 PM

    Two things.
    1. I like the fact that the team with a great record in one division can make the playoffs by beating out a team in a sh*tty division.

Would keep an 8-8 San Diego team from being in last year's playoffs for example.

    2. Who knew there was a rumor mill in Oakland? You'd have to speak to Al Davis' formaldihyde dealer.... he might have the inside scoop

  24. FumbleNuts says: November 21, 2009 5:15 PM

"In his first season as offensive coordinator, the Raiders made it to the Super Bowl."

That was then, this is now.

    See J. Russell.

  25. DasRipper says: November 21, 2009 7:10 PM

I would probably follow the CFL if they had some sort of crossover rule.

Florio puts down the Times article long enough to say:

....Trestman fits the "no other NFL options" profile that owner Al Davis currently applies when hiring head coaches, since men with other NFL options will opt not to coach the Raiders.

How does he fit the "profile" if he's getting his butt sniffed by the Bills? Or do you not consider the Bills an "NFL option?"

the bc lions should not even be in the playoffs PERIOD! first they got blown out in their last game which put them in 4th in their own division then the only way they would make the playoffs was with hamilton who already had clinced a playoff spot would havre to upset winnipeg in winnipeg who needed the win to make the playoffs and sure enuff - winnipeg choked and lost. then bc beat hamilton in hamilton in overtime to get to play montreal.

having said all that the 15-3 team of trestman had trouble with ONLY one team this season - the BC LIONS who they lost to then beat from behind on a last minute TD. plus over the years the bc coach who used to play for montreal has had a tremendous won/loss record against montreal.

    Wiki

"Trestman returned to the NFL in 1995 as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with San Francisco, where he served in that capacity through 1996. The first year he was there the 49ers led the NFL with 457 points scored, 644 pass attempts and 4,779 passing yards."

Trestman worked for several NFL teams. Check him out on Wiki.

What, you're gonna use common sense here, John?

You won't fit in if you keep that up.

Regarding Trestman, if you take the time to look at what he has accomplished everywhere he's been, you'll be shocked.

Dude gets it done everywhere he goes.

and dallas still is in the east for tee vee reasons.

move dallas west. st. loo north. detroit east.

or move the vikes to LA too. then dallas south. st. loo north. then carolina east.

I love how people say that no coach in there right mind would want to go to the Raiders. That is idiotic, with the exception of Rauch (dead) Mike White, and Shanahan everyone else has a job. Get a clue before you post.

No, no, no. Let me help -- The Rosenblooms sell the Rams to Roski, who moves them to his new stadium in the City of Industry, and the team stays in the NFC West. Under$tand why Dalla$ $tayed in the NFC Ea$t, but it's time for a little geographic correction. How about putting the Cowboys in the South and moving, say the Bucs to the East. It's not like the NFC South has any "storied rivalries" to protect.

gotta love how nobody will take the job, yet every coach will create their own rumours, or call Al to interview, and then after not offered the job, they say they are not interested. Seems like the most common names always come back in to play year after year....Fassel, Dennis Green, etc....next coach is either Harbaugh or Kelly. Take Kelly and if Pike's fall to the 3rd round pick him up so he is already familiar with playbook
