Weis' demise could lead to Clausen, Tate leaving

The guessing game regarding Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis’ future probably ended Saturday in South Bend.

Another home loss — this time in overtime to UConn 33-27 in double overtime — is expected to seal Weis’ fate at the school, if it wasn’t already.

So why are we posting this here rather than CollegeFootballTalk or Inside the Irish?

Weis’ removal will likely have a ripple effect on the NFL Draft.  As NBC announcer Pat Haden pointed out after Saturday’s loss, quarterback Jimmy Clausen came to Notre Dame to work under Weis.  He’s unlikely to stay if Weis is removed.  (As a potential first-round pick, there was a good chance he would leave already.)

With Weis and Clausen possibly on their way out, ultra-talented wide receiver Golden Tate also seems less likely to stick around.

Who knows, perhaps Weis can coach Clausen or Tate as their coordinator in the NFL next year.

Notre Dame has some classy fans, but I still find few things more enjoyable than the Irish losing.

Hey, Charlie–not so easy when you don’t know the opposition’s plays, is it? Karma’s a be-o-tch, huh? This guy was the direct beneficiary of the Spygate cheating, as it was his side of the ball that knew what was coming. No sympathy at all for the guy–none…..

Can Floyd leave as well or is he stuck one more year?
Claussen and Tate I think were 90% certain to leave anyway and if Brian Kelley is the new coach, Claussen wouldn’t fit his system – though Tate would more than likely put up numbers to make this year look pedestrian in Kelley’s offense.

Clausen is the best QB in the country and therefore a top 3 pick in the draft upcoming. So he will leave. The ONLY way he could stay is if Weis came back and used Jedi mind control on him.

Some where on Route 1 in Foxboro, a restaurant with an All-U-Can-Eat buffet is praying that Belichick doesn’t pick up the phone…

Tate should be near the top of the WR list for the 2010 draft, but does anyone else wonder if Clausen is going to be a Brady Quinn clone in the NFL?

Intorducing the Cleveland Browns next head coach…Mr. Charlie Weiss.
Crazy? For sure. But remember were talking about the Browns here.

I think that Weis is done. It just goes to show that if you only focus on one side of the ball, your team will pay dearly. Weis had never really focused on bringing a USC type defense to Notre Dame. He had some players on offense through the years, but the defense was never where the offensive talent was. The shame of all of this was that Notre Dame had to have Charlie Weis and got rid of Willingham, because Weis was better and now Weis has a worse winning percentage than Willingham and even Bob Davie. I just hope that Notre Dame can get their act together and get a coach that can turn it around. It is too bad that they missed out on Urban Meyer. He would have been able to do it.

I know I added an extra “S” in Charlie’s last name. That’s because he’s extra Smug.

Forget about Weis, how about that RB Andre Dixon of Conneticut? Runs just like Chris Johnson and I don’t mean his hair.

If Weis cant hack it at ND what makes us think he can do any better in the NFL?!

If the rest of their team was half as talented as the wr tandem they have up there they’d be in business. Would be awesome if Tate or Floyd would fall down to the Bucs early 2nd round but I know that won’t happen

no matter what anyone says the problems at dame are the one thing they can’t say is it is a lack of talent!the 1 thing fatboy did right there was recruit since his classes were always in the top 5 in the country.so who ever is the next genius they bring in better win right away since aperently with all that talent there they just need someone who knows how to coach.

  18. stanjam says: Nov 21, 2009 9:37 PM

Hmm, the Patriots never did name anyone as offensive co-ordinator. Could it be that they were leaving the spot open for Weiss to come back into the NFL? I know the fans in NE would be very happy to see him come back. For that matter what is Romeo doing now? Could we see the return of the coaching staff that brought NE three Superbowl wins in four years? If they were to both come back then I wouldn’t be surprised to see NE make a run at a couple more. Since they left there has really been a void at the co-ordinator position. On both sides of the ball they never really had anyone that could do much. There was Josh and 2007, sure, but with that offense my grandma could have set records. When they faced good teams Josh couldn’t adapt, and that killed them. Weiss would have rewritten the game if he had those kinds of weapons!
And to the idiot that said he was only what he was because of the taping. Please tell me you understand a little more football than that, yes?

LOL. Jimmy Clausen is going to be a career 3rd stringer and will be lucky to be a first day pick. Let him come out of college. He hasn’t done anything in college to justify being a high pick.

Jimmy Clausen will fail worse than Brady Quinn in the NFL!!! WHO IN THE HELL CONSIDERS CLAUSEN 1st ROUND TALENT??? WHO FLORIO??? YOU IDIOT

  22. AutumnWind999 says: Nov 22, 2009 12:30 AM

Weiss will probably get an NFL offensive coordinator job … unless he’d rather retire on the many million$ ND owes him on a buyout. He was always a good playcaller — at least in New England — but ND has waaay too much talent this season to be 6-5 with losses to Navy, UConn and Michigan. How do you have a season like this with Clausen at QB and Floyd and Tate at WR. Not to mention a bunch of other really good players. Unacceptable. Weiss can start packing up his office tomorrow. He’s done.

  23. jnestorr says: Nov 22, 2009 12:38 AM

So much for all that – i wanna retire here at ND talk from Boy Weis

Notre Dame has high standards for athletes. Must be athletic and smart. I say smart because Florida State has some players that read on a 2nd grade level. How can you take college courses and read on a 2nd grade level? Doesn’t make much sense to me but if Notre Dame wants to compete, lower your standards.

  25. unamaka says: Nov 22, 2009 1:38 AM

Clausen is a 1st talent. A lot of people can’t tell that from his team but if you watch him week in and week out, he is arguably the top QB in the draft. Sure he’s not perfect, but his accuracy and QB skills are 2nd to none.

  26. danmateus75 says: Nov 22, 2009 2:44 AM

The word around the Gillete stadium is that Charlie Weis has already been told that he is not returning to Notre Dame and that he will accept Belichick’s invitation to return next year as the oc of NE. This is why they haven’t named an oc for this season.
Appearently this has always been an open invite to Charlie if he ever wants it back. And the scuttlebutt is is that Charlie is burned out from coaching an entire program and would love to come back and coach Tom Brady’s offense for big bucks. Nice gig for Charlie.

    ================================
More likely , A Cutler clone…he runs his mouth way too much. If he goes to a team with a good running game and he has to be a game manager, it could be a match. If Buff gets right offensive system, he’s a possibility there.

First of all, HUH? And the score ws 33-30. Wasnt this game ON NBC? You’d think they’d at least get the score right.

I saw the picture of Chaz Bono on my homepage the other day and that was my exact thought (well, actually I thought Chaz looked just like Charlie…..)….has anyone ever seen the two of them in the same place at the same time? Hmmm…..

claussen will turn out like brady quinn, another big ole bust. shame on whoever blows their first first round pick on him.
and its not just florio that thinks hes gonna be a top 5 pick, look around the mock drafts on the internet and a lot of people think hes gonna be a top pick.
