Raiders stun Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals were feeling pretty good about themselves entering today’s game in Oakland.  Cincinnati was 7-2 and in first place in the AFC North, and their two division rivals, the Ravens and Steelers, had both lost early games this afternoon.

But the Bengals won’t be feeling so good about themselves tonight as they fly home from Oakland.

In a shocking upset that will reshape the AFC playoff race, the Raiders scored 10 points in the final 41 seconds to beat the Bengals, 20-17.

The Bengals had a 17-10 lead that appeared to be safe in the fourth quarter, but Louis Murphy reeled in a 29-yard touchdown pass from Bruce Gradkowski with 41 seconds remaining to tie the score.

Bengals return man Andre Caldwell fumbled the ensuing kickoff, the Raiders recovered, and Oakland didn’t even try to advance the ball before sending in Sebastian Janikowski in for the game-winning field goal.

Now the Bengals are 7-3, and the AFC North race is still a race. The Raiders, at 3-7, aren’t playoff contenders, but they’re not the laughingstocks of the NFL they’re sometimes portrayed as: Oakland usually plays competitive football.

And the biggest winners may have been the Colts, who now have a three-game lead over the rest of the AFC.

Man, good thing the Steelers lost today. They still have a two game lead in the division. I’m not exactly sure how it re-shapes the playoff position since they are still tied with NE for the #2 seed, but hey, anything this site can do to make Florio not feel bad for the Chiefs beating the Steelers.
Told you the Bengals didn’t need to worry about making a statement and beating up on an inferior opponent. They needed to win, by a point, by 2, by 50, they just needed to win, and they didn’t do that. Oh well, come back next week, get it on with Cleveland and try to get this AFC North swept and stay up by 2 games.

You want to talk about a typical Bengal football game, this was it. The sloppiness on offense, the inconsitancy on defense, the awful play in the red zone, the missed field goal by Graham, and of course what is a Cincinnati football game without a bunch of penalties. All is well though, we’re still in first place. WHO DEY!

  10. Stillerz says: Nov 22, 2009 7:31 PM

HAHAHA Bengals fans were all over the ‘Chiefs Shock Steelers’ post, now this… HAHA you left the door WIDE open for the Steelers. This day ends the same way it began, the Bengals 1 game ahead of the Steelers with plenty of games to play.

Geez. 3 AFC North teams (Browns, Steelers, Bengals) lost to terrible teams (Detroit, KC, Oakland). All 4 lost overall…
    What an odd day…
But hey, thanks for not knocking us out of the race, Bengals.

Im pulling for JaMarcus to get his act together and hope to see some more commitment from him on the sidelines with the other QBs and the coach, but for right now and maybe into next season, lets see what Gradkowski is really made of..
The D really stepped up in the 2nd half..

All the Raiders have needed ALL season long is just a semi-mediocre QB and they could have been close to .500.
Whoever’s idea it was to keep Russell in there the first 10 weeks of the season should be fired ASAP.
Unfortuneately, something tells me it was the owner who demanded to see Russell choke week in and week out.
I’m glad the Raiders won. At the very least it shows Old Man Davis how competitive this team could be if a semi-competant QB was at the helm.

The Steelers have a very good passing game and it got shut down against Cincy. Matter of fact, so do the Ravens, and both were shut down the past 2 weeks. If they can’t get it going, it’s very unlikely Oakland does, which means your running game will probably remain dormant.

Looks like it took Larry Johnson a grand total of 3 days to ruin the Bengal’s mojo. Meanwhile the Chiefs send him packing and come out with a new found energy and enthusiasm.
    Coincidence?
Apparently the guy is radioactive even if he’s just standing on the sideline.

  24. dustyschmidt22 says: Nov 22, 2009 7:41 PM

bengals deserved that loss, horrible playcalling. you dont get conservative and run out the clock at the end of the 1st quarter.
also, you cant turn the ball over 3 times and expect to win. hopefully this was a wake up call that we may be able to sniff the playoffs, we arent guaranteed berth.

  25. beartg1229 says: Nov 22, 2009 7:41 PM

    Un-freaking-believable.
Completely embarrassing. Jeremi Johnson fumbles in the red zone, Shayne Graham misses a 37 yarder, horrible red zone play calls, Jonathon Joseph drops a pick 6 right before the TD to Murphy, and of course the fumble by Caldwell. Absolutely horrendous performance by everyone all around.

  32. shinsnake says: Nov 22, 2009 7:56 PM

The Bengals with Larry Johnson are like America under Obama, let a moron in the house, and the whole thing goes to hell in a handbasket. Seriously, I don’t see how his presence made Scott and Leonard not pick up blitzes or made Shayne Graham miss a field goal (that could have been the game winner) or made Bratkowski call a quick handoff to the fullback in the redzone when your QB can only hand off with one hand. LJ did look pretty slow though, so maybe he is just done as a running back in this league.

But no, that’s not more sad than anti-Bengals fans who post smack about Karma. What’s really sad is the little Joes in the world who cry about something when they don’t like what they hear. 45. shinsnake says: Nov 22, 2009 9:36 PM

You know the thing that is the most ridiculous about this loss is the fact that I didn’t see anyone hustling down field with Scott to throw an extra block to spring him for the TD instead of the missed (?) field goal. And then in the final minute of the 4th quarter, three different defensive backs had their hands on the football and no one could bring it in for the game winning interception. The little things that don’t show up on the highlight reel…

Good news for the Bengals is…..only good teams make the playoffs so the playing down to your competition shit goes out the window.
Good news, the Steelers are booty and might not make the playoffs.
Did I see Ben sneak a Twinkie in his mouth while they were examining him in OT? To think, the Steelers in a fight to make the playoffs and fat boy sits out.

First and foremost i’ll give credit where credit is due. Huge win for Oakland, they made plays when it mattered the most and picked up a W.
Now that i’ve thrown out the rightful props, i’ll defend my prior statement. Cincy still held Oakland to under 100 yards rushing, and under 300 total yards. They have shut down far superior offenses in back to back weeks prior to this, and did a decent enough job in this game. Oakland’s D came up with some costly turnovers which created a short field, and as I said before, Oakland capitalized. Congrats once again to the Raiders.
I for one am not too worried about this week. No, it shouldn’t have happened, but almost every team in the league loses a game they shouldn’t, like the Steelers this week, the Pats in week 3, The Eagles in Oakland, Dallas in Green Bay last week, Green Bay in Tampa the week before. As long as we don’t come out and lay the same egg against Cleveland next week, i’ll be satisified with where this team is at after 10 games.

I didn’t get to the see the game, but read the news and watched the highlights this morning. It looks as if they took advantage of our personnel weakness that I spoke of last week, our weak minded off-coord (really? no more passing after Palmer starts 8/9/121 in the first quarter???), and the Bengals helped them out by coughing up turnovers. Oh well…
I love the douchey steeler commits please keep them coming; they are entertaining. You guys really have nothing to talk about but you are too ignorant to realize it.

  59. skf727 says: Nov 23, 2009 9:53 AM

As a Raider fan, this game makes you wonder what might have been had Gradkowski been playing after the first month or so when it became apparent that Jamarcus was not progressing.
The Raiders actually looked competent on offense. Not good, mind you. But competent.
And one last thing, Jamarcus. What’s with the earbuds?!?!
Probably not the best way to debunk the conventional wisdom that you simply don’t care. But lemme guess…you really don’t!

  60. eik01 says: Nov 23, 2009 10:33 AM

    @skf727
I will be the last one to defend JaMarcus on anything, but in this case I think the ear buds were probably so he could listen in on what was being communicated between Cable and Gradkowski.
In the end though I think you are right, it always feels like he is just going through the motions. All the underhanded shots from the offense about how much better everything was with Gradkowski running things just proves the rumors are true.
