Simms starting, Orton backing him up

The Denver Broncos decided Saturday that they'd start Chris Simms at quarterback barring Kyle Orton experiencing an overnight medical miracle.

Apparently Orton woke up this morning without anything miraculous having happened to his injured ankle, because Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that Simms will start today against the San Diego Chargers.

However, there is one surprising piece of news: The Broncos were expected to use rookie Tom Brandstater as the backup quarterback, but instead Orton will be active as the No. 2 quarterback. That suggests that Orton is healthy enough to play in case of emergency.

And if Simms plays like he did last week, that might constitute an emergency. Last week Simms went a horrendous 3-of-13 for 13 yards, with an interception. With first place in the AFC West on the line, the Broncos can't afford that kind of performance from Simms today.

If McDaniels can win with this QB situation, then he truly is a genius.
