Kampman, Harris out for season

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy has confirmed the expected bad news that two of his top defensive players are out for the season.

Both outside linebacker Aaron Kampman and cornerback Al Harris will require season-ending knee surgery after injuries suffered in Sunday’s win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Kampman will become an unrestricted free agent after the season, so it’s possible that he’s played his final game as a Packer, although McCarthy said he’d hate to think either Kampman or Harris could be gone next year.

I hope not,” McCarthy said. “They’ve meant a lot to our organization and have been great representatives of the Green Bay Packers.”

“McCarthy said he’d hate to think either Kampman or Harris could be gone next year.”
McCarthy might, but you can bet Thompson is salivating over the prospect of having an excuse to cut loose two more of the non-Thompson players…

    Kampman-Get well soon.
Harris- Karma’s a bitch, now enjoy your time off.

  3. SlipperyPete says: Nov 23, 2009 12:43 PM

Amen, MM. Hopefully they will both be back next year. They both keep themselves in phenomenal condition, and should bounce back.

  4. Majik Man says: Nov 23, 2009 12:49 PM

I’d say they’re both gone, based on how the Packers’ brass have handled other players who “meant a lot to our organization and have been great representatives of the Green Bay Packers.”
Hopefully, Thompson and Big Mac will have nothing to do with the re-signing of Kampman or Harris, or any other Packer next season.

  5. jorge says: Nov 23, 2009 12:51 PM

    That’s devastating news for sure.
Especially since the Pack were likely thinking of Franchising then trading Kampman in the off season…
There goes any kinda trade value this guy was gonna have for us.

  6. sodaknick says: Nov 23, 2009 12:53 PM

“Meant a lot”. “Great representatives”. Ask the Vikings QB (and MVP) how much weight those words hold.

This is exactly why Viking fans suck! Harris hurts AP on a routine tackle that sidelines him for a few weeks, and now some asshole calls Harris plowing out his knee and being out for the SEASON vindication.

  8. nerd says: Nov 23, 2009 1:20 PM

Both of these guys were given paydays by Ted Thompson. He didn’t originally acquire them, but they still got paid.
Coincidentally, neither of them thought they were bigger than the team.

  9. Bill Cowher's Chin says: Nov 23, 2009 1:20 PM

Are the Packer fans seriously going to pretend that this is a big loss, after spending the last 10 weeks bitching that Dom Capers’ 3-4 defense has taken Kampman’s playmaking ability right out of the game? Seriously, this doesnt hurt them in any on the field, it simply hurts them when they try t trade a player coming off of IR…..

  10. purpleguy says: Nov 23, 2009 1:25 PM

I’ll say it again, Kampman deserved better all year, and now he just lost a ton of money in free agency. It’s a bummer, the whole deal sucks for him.

  11. Fire Ted says: Nov 23, 2009 1:49 PM

Sodaknick….Perhaps you need to hear this one more time since you are obviously ignorant, or simply blinded by hatred for the Packers….Favre retired…he was asked to return not once, not twice, but three times and he said no. The Packers made personnel changes and draft picks based on moving on without Favre, a decision Favre made for himself. Nobody made him do it then when they made it known they were comfortable moving on with a QB not named Favre, greybeard’s feelings were hurt and he said he wanted to play. Tough luck for him. Favre holds at least half, if not most of the blame. Ted Thompson is a moron, but he does hot hold all the blame for the Favre issue, not even close.

  13. simple_simon1 says: Nov 23, 2009 2:08 PM

Wow. Anybody want to bet that with Harris out, Johnson has a pretty good day on Thursday? Woodson is great, but he’s not physical enought to play against CJ.
This could be bad news going into the Thursday game in Detroit. You all might laugh, but Green Bay better not take the Lions too lightly. If the offense shows up again it could be a shoot out.

  14. JimmySmith says: Nov 23, 2009 2:20 PM

Let the Biqueen fans sound off, even if their comments are classless in some cases. They will only have two more years to talk smack before true karma arrives in Mpls where the Fox station will soon be carrying GB Packer football games every Sunday. They can always subscribe to NFL ticket to watch the LA Vikings still trying to win their first Superbowl.

  15. CutlerISaPussy says: Nov 23, 2009 2:24 PM

Hey FireTed…I will tell you what. He deserved better than that crappy organization called the Green Bay Fudgepackers. Happy to help clarify for your stupid a$$.

  16. VikeRube says: Nov 23, 2009 2:32 PM

Kampman is a free agent next year, he’s going to want to go to a system that plays a 4-3, will want to play for a contender and probably wouldn’t mind sticking it to the Packers for switching their defense thus negating all of his strengths as a traditional pass rusher and putting him in a situation he wasn’t comfortable in and drained some of his value going into a contract year? I like Ray Edwards as much as the next guy but Allen, Williams, Williams and Kampman sounds deadly.

Wow is right, and your screen name seems pretty accurate as well.
Woodson is, and always was, a FAR better corner than Harris. “Not physical enough”? There are no more than 3 WRs in the entire league that Woodson can’t cover to the point of shutting them down. Calvin Johnson, while talented, is not one of them.
You clearly haven’t watched many Packer games this year. Enjoy the one on Thursday. I won’t ever guarantee a win against any team, but I will say with a great deal of confidence that it sure as hell won’t be a shootout.

  18. Schau3r says: Nov 23, 2009 2:39 PM

As a Packer fan, I couldn’t agree more with poster “Beer Cheese Soup”. Thompson is running anyone not associated with his “regime” slowly out the door. It was just noticed when he let the face of the franchise go.

  19. wrath4771 says: Nov 23, 2009 2:40 PM

What an incredibly crappy way for Kampman’s career to end as a Packer. The guy has done nothing but busted his butt since coming to Green Bay and he ends up playing out of position and blowing out his knee costing him a big pay day. Kampman deserves better. I feel equally as bad for Harris – this was more than likely his last year with the Packers and now he’ll be an aging cornerback also recovering from a torn ACL. Not only is his Packer career over, but likely his NFL career as well.

  20. footballrulz says: Nov 23, 2009 2:43 PM

    @ simple_simon1
no laughter here. Packers have proven they can lose to bad teams (Buccaneers) & with those two out GB had better not be looking past anyone.
    @ Bill’s Chin
Kampman was having one of his best games to date & Capers was better utilizing his strengths. I think they were finally starting to get on the same page. I think his best games were yet to come and hope he ends up back at GB next year.
    @ Fire Ted
Don’t waste your time on that arguement. Farve’s minions have blinders on–he can do no wrong.

It was a legal hit on the ball carrier. Let it go. If he had tried to tackle Peterson high he probably would’ve been steamrolled. Solid tackle, unfortunate injury. Nothing more. No karma.

That sucks for these guys. You never want to see someone out for the year.
Kampman is a beast and might be playing with his old qb next year, you know, if he comes back again…like Michael Myers. Allen-Kampman bookending the Williams Wall. You know the Vikes don’t mind cheese retread. Kampman will be able to play with his hand down. Ray Edwards contract is coming up, it will be interesting to see what happens. There is no 3-4 in your future.
    Get well soon guys.

Sounds like you’re saying the individual is more important than the team.. Is that correct? Yeah, it sucks for Kampman. Yeah, he never really fit into that 3-4 linebacker role very well.
But the proof is in the pudding.

I’ll take team success over individual success any day. Oh, and when was Kampman injured? While rushing the passer. It’s not like he was trying to cover a RB or TE down the field when he was injured. If they had stayed with the 4-3 and he was having a banner year he still may have suffered the same injury.

You sound like one of those angry Packers fans. I didn’t call down your team at all. I just said that it was going to be a lot more difficult to cover CJ with Harris out. CJ is always covered by Harris because he plays bump and run in a much more physical way.
Woodson is awesome and might do just fine, but if he doesn’t get help over the top, they better pray that they get pressure on Stafford. If he gets time back there, CJ will be open all day in my opinion. Still doesn’t mean the Lions win of coarse, but it’s going to be better than you think.

  25. Bob Nelson says: Nov 23, 2009 3:50 PM

It isn’t as bad as some may think. The Packers are an excellent team, loaded with depth and lots of talent.
The Packers are sitting in playoff position right now and have the tiebreaker with the Cowboys and are ahead of the Giants in Conference record.
Packer fans are enjoying the season and as always are remaining positive.

  26. TheBaySay says: Nov 23, 2009 4:13 PM

Not sure that the Packers will have Woodson cover Johnson. I think more likely it’ll be Williams with help from Collins or Bigby. They seem to like to use Woodson on TEs these days or secondary receivers where Woodson’s smarts make up for any lack of speed. God help us if Jarrett Bush is left alone on Johnson on any play. Bush ought to wear a sandwich sign saying “want a big play? Throw over here!”

Okay, fair enough. I can agree with that. I think all NFL defenses hinge on getting pressure on the QB anyway though. Anyone can pick apart the opposing coverage if given enough time.
Oh, and yes, I am an angry Packer fan. These days, there are only two kinds: the angry ones, and the delusional ones. I’ll take the lesser of the two evils.

That’s the truth. I’m pretty sure Capers is smart enough not to do that though. He’s been coaching long enough to know who is talented and who isn’t.

  30. Vikes#28Owns says: Nov 23, 2009 5:02 PM

It is unfortunate that both these players will be gone for the season. It is never good when a player gets lost for the season on any team. Throw in Woodson and you have the 3 players that scare me the most on the Packers Defense.
    @GaryVanNostren
“This is exactly why Viking fans suck! Harris hurts AP on a routine tackle that sidelines him for a few weeks, and now some asshole calls Harris blowing out his knee and being out for the SEASON vindication.”
Not all Vikings fans are glad to see this happen but look at the facts as to why that idiotic post celebrating a knee injury would be posted. Adrian was having another phenomenal year and 2 to 3 weeks were lost because Harris laid a helmet first hit on the knee of Peterson’s planted foot. He had to know this could possible result in injury no matter how “routine” the tackle was. Then there was all the rumors that their was a bounty out for Adrian. Those two combined made for angry Vikings fans.
Lets flip the scenario. Aaron Rodgers is having a Pro Bowl season without a doubt. Lets say on his scramble against the Vikings in Lambeau Winfield made the same “routine” tackle with his helmet hitting the knee of Rodgers that forced him to miss 2 to 3 weeks. Then after the game Winfield made a comment like “Well he was scrambling all over the field so we just wanted to make sure to knock him out of the game”. Are you telling me you or other Packers fans wouldn’t have the inclination to call Winfield a cheap shot for the rest of his career?
Here is a link to the clip for anyone who wants to take a look. The injury (Not cheap shot) happens around the 2:50 mark.

    Vikes#28Owns:
There is a difference between hating a player, cheap shot artist or not, and cheering when he gets hurt.
For example: As you probably know, Brian Urlacher went down in week one against the Pack and ended his season. Of course we all hate the Bears, and we especially hate Urlacher after all the good plays he’s made against us in his career.
Yet I did not hear one Pack fan say they were glad he was hurt, or that he deserved it. In fact, most of us, myself included, were telling Bears fans (who we also hate) what a shame it was, and wishing him a speedy recovery.
It’s a terrible thing when someone, anyone, is seriously hurt playing a game. When people say they’re happy about it, it makes me absolutely sick. It’s completely classless and wrong, and there’s no excuse for it at all.
I don’t care what Harris or any other player did to you or your team. You shouldn’t cheer about their injury. It’s just a game people, not a war.

The 2009 Packers defense (to this point) is much better than the 2008 Packers defense. If you’d like to debate that fact, I’ll be here waiting. And yes, I’ll be using statistics to back it up. I always like to augment my statements with FACT.
I did not make any comparison between the 2009 Vikings defense and the 2009 Packers defense. And if I had, I wouldn’t be so stupid to selectively pick and choose which stats to use. Really, only including the pass defense yardage because that’s all that fits your adorable little argument, Pervy?

Yeah, it is a shame when players get injured. I too felt bad when Urlacher went down and I’m actually a big fan. Like I said I am also a fan of Harris and Kampman. So much so I keep hoping that Kampman is a Viking next year that way we don’t have to play him twice a year.
I was simply stating that while you may love the game and hate the injuries I just would argue that not every Packers fan is as realistic as you about how it is just a game. Just like obviously not every Vikings fan is based upon that idiotic post celebrating Harris’ injury.
Instead of calling out all Vikings fans for being idiots why not call out the one specific fan that made the post.

First, I live in GB but am a Viking fan. Both these players spend alot of time in the community and they seem like upstanding people off the field. Get well soon.
Plus, now the Packer fans have built in excuses for any upcoming losses; “we would have won if Kampman or Harris were here. ” I would rather beat GB with all players healthy. It takes away excuses and provides a true gauge how good the Vikings are.
