Mawae gets a cheap shot from Antonio Smith

NBC’s Rodney Harrison thinks the Titans are the dirtiest team in the league.  Those in the league think that Titans center Kevin Mawae is its dirtiest player.

For at least one play, Mawae has been one-upped.

During the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game, Texans defensive end Antonio Smith applied a wicked elbow to Mawae’s midsection, right in front of the umpire.  Smith drew a flag, the Titans picked up 15 yards of field position, and Smith surely will be facing a stiff fine.

On the very next play, Mawae drew the ire of Texans defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, via an apparent chop block.  Specifically, it looked as if Mawae tried to go low on Okoye while Okoye was engaged up high by the right guard.

As to Smith, we’ve got a feeling that his explanation involves an allegation of something that Mawae did to him before Antonio put his elbow into the lower portion of the NFLPA president’s torso.

I would say I’ve seen Mawae sprawl out and go for the ankles at least 5 times easily in the latter half of the game alone (whether or not the player was engaged with another lineman up high).

Mawae, like Flozell Adams, has gotten even dirtier with age. When your skills are in decline, I suppose you do what you can to make an impact.

I saw the Mawae play. It was uncalled for. They should of ended his season on the very next play.

mawae has been a dirty player for years. i remember watching him 2 years ago when they played the chargers and saw him cut Merriman from behind wigh actually was thcause of his knee issues the next year.

I think the dirtiest team in the league would be the ones who tape other team’s play signals wait, oh oops

bonger if you watched the game you would know it was Ben Hartsock on a crack back toss that ended Merrimans run at whatever over rated glory he had. And it was a completely clean and legal play, but a lot of people seem to forget it is in retaliation for a cheap shot he gave Vince after Vince handed it off.

If he is the dirtiest player in the NFL (he may be, I’m not trying to dispute that), and it’s a fact recognized throughout the league, why dosen’t he get more attention from the ref’s. The fact is that all players take advantage of any oppertunity to win “their assignment”. Holding could be called on every play, on both sides of the ball. If the ref’s don’t see it, it didn’t happen (ala the trip on Young). If they do see it, then it did happen (refrence the phantom horse collar of Chris Johnson). The burden is on the ref’s not the players. Mawae must be doing something right

On a thread that has no connection to them at all, you trot out the tired old lame-ass Patriots BS….
you are a lame one-trick pony, and that pony has been dead for two years now.
    Lame. Very lame.
Weak. You’ve got no take whatsoever, dude.

You can take it to the bank that Antonio Smith was retaliating for something not so nice that Mawae did to him. I’m certain Mawae EARNED that elbow. Mawae is a very well documented cheap shot artist.

bonger you have that play confused with the crack back block from our te (ben harstock, now with the falcons) which was a retaliation for the cheap shot merriam had on vy..needless to say he had it coming, you take a shot we take a shot..simple as that

Mawae has always been a dirty SOB…he did something to Smith that caused Smith to react the way he did…Smith should have tried to pull that SOB eyes out….Mawae, Flozell, Lutui, and Dahl are the dirtiest OLinemens in the game

I have no axe to grind for either team, but I remember a play at the end of a game many years ago with the Jets, where the Jets QB threw a pick and during the runback Mawae viciously grabbed the ankle of one of the opposing team’s players and twisted hard, causing a knee injury. It was one of the dirtiest and most uncalled for plays I have seen in my life.

Mawae was at his antagonizing best last night. He had the whole Texans defense pissed off at him.

  15. MistrezzRachael says: Nov 24, 2009 7:12 AM

Mawae is a POS …as is anyone who intentionally goes for someones knees while engaged.
He was that way w/the jets too…no surprise there.

Rodney should know, the Titans blew out his knee in a playoff game.

Kevin Mawae is a center… how in the hell would he be on the field when a Jets QB throws a pick?

I thought those in the league thought Hines Ward was its dirtiest player.

Better than that, Dobler used to file down his teeth to make them sharper, like fangs, so he could get to the juicy insides.

Actually, he failed at his chop block. Watch the replay again, the scuffle was not for the chop block, but right before the play ended Mawae hit Okoye in the throat, then gave a slight push. The push was only to ensure that if Okoye retaliated it would be really late, and possibly another flag. Mawae is an outstanding center, president of the players union, but man does he get under DTs skins. I think its more because he holds them better than anyone in the league and doesn’t get called for it (you guys see at least 2 Mawae holds that Gruden and Jaws said were great blocks but were actually obvious holds that went uncalled didnt ya?). But games like this make players play their ugliest sometimes. And that throat shot was disgusting, i hope the league notices it like i did. Expect fines for 3-4 players.

Tell me you are joking…….. You cant really be that stupid. I will break it down for you, and answer your question on behalf of Hans Blix.
Kevin Mawae spent the first 8 years or so playing for the Jets. During one of those seasons with the Jets, his QB threw an interception (presumably Pennington). After a QB throws an interception, all of the offensive players (that means even the Center) become defensive players, to make a tackle, to prevent a touch down…… That, is how, “Kevin Mawae, a center, is on the field when a Jets QB throws an interception, considering your name is “bleedgreen”, I’m not surprised you dont understand…….

Dobler was definitely certifiable. Think of Jared Allen as a calm, mild mannered, quiet individual.
Because that’s what he is compared to the way Dobler was.
Hey does anybody else find it strange that Mawae is the President of the NFLPA, yet he allegedly injures his “brothers” deliberately?
    Maybe it’s just me.

I assumed BleedGreen meant you were a jets fan, but maybe not….I’m guessing that since Mawae played for the jets for 6 or 7 years, and had his best seasons there ( multiple Pro Bowl appearances), he had plenty of oportunities to be on the field when a jets qb threw a pick.

AS a fan of football, and a vikings fan, I don’t root for Houston or Tennessee. I watched a great hard hitting game last night that was decided by two missed fg by Brown. However there was a lot of non-calls and bad calls by the refs. That phantom horse collar call was one of the worst made by a ref this season. The defenders arm was in the completely wrong position to make a horse collar grab. unless he has double jointed wrists there is no way to reach from the waist level up and make a horse collar grab.
automatic 1st down when it should have been 3rd and long. The nontripping call was pretty brutal too, not as bad as the tripping call on minnesota against Pittsburgh but still a bad call.
When will the league get full time refs and train through the off season.

hey titansfan615 u seem to be the one who is confused because it was mawae chasing merriman down and cheap shotting him in the back that injured him. and as for your cheap shot on your so called qb VY he actually held up on the end of the play when your guy turned and ran into him. he’s lucky he didn’t get his clock cleaned. maybe hartsock did get a crackback on shawne but it was mawae’s hit that injured his knee.
