Rex Ryan will help more on offense

Rex Ryan is a blogger's best friend.

When Monday evening arrives and Florio is on his way back from New York to PFT headquarters, Ryan is there to help.  All we have to do is check the latest Jets press conference and there's usually something newsworthy within.

He didn't disappoint this week.

Ryan said that he's going to take a more active role in the team's offense moving forward.  He plans to be in rookie Mark Sanchez's ear all game long and will attend more offensive meetings.

"This isn't a slight on [offensive coordinator] Brian [Schottenheimer]. I'm going to be standing there to support Brian," Ryan said.  "I'm new to this. I came in with more of a controlling interest in the defense. It's not a threatening deal [to Schottenheimer]. I have to oversee this whole football team."

We're not sure why he wasn't heavily involved before.  The model of a head coach that is only concerned with one side of the ball, best typified by Ryan's father Buddy, doesn't make sense.

In Bringing the Heat, Ryan's father's attitude towards offense seemed to volley between apathy and disdain.  Having a specialty as a coach is fine.  Ignoring half the team seems counterproductive.

"If that's all I bring to [Mark Sanchez], how to protect the football and make him understand he has to protect the football, that's what I'm going to do," Ryan said.

While the consequences may be unintentional, Ryan risks appearing to tacitly assign blame in this situation.  If Sanchez improves his ball security, Ryan is positioned to get the credit.

Ryan was asked if taking a bigger role in the offense would put too much on Ryan's plate.

"There's always a lot on my plate," Ryan deadpanned.

Fat Rex has no idea what he is doing. Why is a head coach not getting involved in the offense until week 12?

A bust at QB and a head coach that doesn't know what he is doing, it must be great being a Jets fan! Welcome to another 10 years of mediocrity.

    I'll tell you why.

It's my belief the Jets brass wanted to hire Schottenheimer as the HC in January. However, they knew their fanbase would go absolutely nuts. They found themselves a coach that would allow Schottenheimer to run the offense, making them happy.

Now, after 10 games, Ryan has finally had enough, and he wants to protect his job from being 1 and done (which it won't be. When you look inside the #s, he's done wonders with the Jets defense. They've allowed 14 points a game when you remove return TDs). This gives him the "I wasn't involved in the Offense for the 1st 10 games, but then I got involved, and we improved" case if they do better, and if they do not he can go with "I saw what was going on and a change is necessary"

There have been plenty of head coaches who only worry about one side of the ball.

Gruden said when he went to Tampa that the D was Kiffin's and he'd worry about the O.

Tony Dungy didnt do squat with the O in Indi. Peyton Manning and Tom Moore ran the entire O.

Brian Billick in Baltimore when Marvin Lewis was the DC.

    There are many more.

Jabba the hut did want to oversee everything, didn't he? Sanchez better listen,he is nothing more than snack for Ryan if he gets hungry for Mexican.

It's very simple. Rex is just not very smart. That's not to say that a not very smart person can't be a great D-coordinator or even a half-decent head coach, but in today's NFL, why would you ever want to go with a head coach who isn't brilliant.

Go back to to day-after press conferences after the second Miami game. It takes Rex about 10 minutes just to say, "You can't just win in one or two phases of the game, you have to win the entire game," partly because he probably really thinks he did win that game, but I digress... That entire press conference is a monument to his stupidity. One could argue that he fell off the cliff in week two or after the first loss to Miami, but ever since that second loss to Miami, every single one of his press conferences he has been a blabbering idiot, ringing circles around his own stupidity that he is trying to sell his players.

Particularly when you compare that conference with the one held by Sparano. Sparano had to deal with the politic issue of essentially being dominated but still winning but he also could have rattled off every single grade and decision made by every member of the team throughout the game at any moment, he was probably prepared to do so by 3am that morning, and could probably still do so... He was even able to convince me that the 2-pt conversion attempt (which I thought at the time was a horrendous decision) was the wise one. Why? Because he's smart.

He also plays with heart and guts and sweat and all that shit Rex exemplifies, but also, in that equally flabby, "man's man" of a body is a brilliant, analytical brain.

Rex may have his role as a D-coordinator or cheerleader, but he is simply not head coaching material. Most NFL organizations have known this about the entire family for a long time. Elevate them to cheerleading D-coordinators if you have a stronger, controlling, intelligent presence at head coach, but otherwise, beware: brain cells do not return from there!

Maybe he could play guard, he has that low center of gravity thing going for him. Other than that, I think he may be doing more than what his players want from him as it is.

  8. INVAIDUH says: November 23, 2009 8:10 PM

Help more on offense? Is he going to play center?

    Fat F.

  9. PolegoJim says: November 23, 2009 8:20 PM

And the Jets have become 'the Jets' once again.

I wonder if Mark Sanchez STILL knows just how good and special this football team is?

They just might end up worse than the Buck or Redskins...again.

  10. Backinthesaddle says: November 23, 2009 8:21 PM

He's a rookie QB and Belichek now has enough on him to really mess him up. This week he just changed up everything the kid was expecting see. Just another case of diabolical Bill scheming an inexperienced QB right out of his socks.

The kid will grow and learn and get better. He REALLY has to be smarter with the ball though. That pick to Merriweather just plain stupid.

  11. ampats says: November 23, 2009 8:22 PM

    To all Jests fans,

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

40 going on 50 years of futility.

  12. GiantsDefenseRules says: November 23, 2009 8:54 PM

I would take Rex over Mangini any day. Rex is learning on the job and admits it...Mangini acts like Belichek with NOTHING to back it up.

At least Rex doesn't blame the other team of faking injuries....c'mon Eric, get a grip.

  13. FireJerryJones says: November 23, 2009 9:08 PM

Sanchez has all of 1 year's experience starting in college?
On th Job Traing programs in New York...
    Yeah. That'll work.

Lifetime Steeler fan raised in western PA weighing in here - with no love, but plenty of respect for the Ravens ... and Rex Ryan who was the DC there.

If any of you guys ever fastened a chinstrap, Rex is the kind of guy you want to have covering your ass in a foxhole. Solid, inspiring, loyal and a fighter. I also dig his sense of humor too, and he believes in his boyz.

Yeah, the Jets may be struggling to find their stride - but I dig Rex Ryan and would know he would have any of his player's backs in a dark alley if things got nasty. Contrast this with other coaches like Mangini or LSU's Les Miles who try to place blame on their players.

Many, but not all, of the people calling him out for this or that are safely tucked away behind their computer keyboards ..... and are complete cupcakes adorned in designer Snuggies who'd shit their pants if they had to change places with Ryan for 48 hours.

  16. Bigbluefan says: November 23, 2009 10:38 PM

Well at least we know the Jets wont be in the playoffs this year

Rex is like his dad a bumbling fool

  17. RayDaMayor says: November 23, 2009 10:41 PM

    Wick,
It's a game of FOOTBALL....not dark alleys and foxholes. Who cares if Rex can defend himself in an alley? He is failing as a Head Coach, period, end of story. He isn't HC material.

And besides, he obviously spends way to much time downing cheeseburgers instead of scheming his offense.

"We're not sure why he wasn't heavily involved before. The model of a head coach that is only concerned with one side of the ball, best typified by Ryan's father Buddy, doesn't make sense."

Not necessarily. Andy Reid coached in Philly for 10 years with his hands completely off the defense. He worried about the offense and gave Jim Johnson complete control of the defense. I'm not sure if that arrangement has changed since Jim passed, but it's not a completely farfetched concept.

"There's always a lot on my plate."

Rex Ryan is obese. Has that been used yet? I'm sure it has.

Anyway, he's a dangerously overweight man. He clearly eats too much unhealthy food. Now laugh.

i think Rex is a joke as well but besides the hate for the most classless organisation in football the naked truth is this:

    - Rex is a kick ass DC, but his mentality is not working as a HC.

Rex Ryan to me is like a poker player who goes every round all in. After 2-3 rounds you gonna figure it out that he is bluffing a lot.

The other issue they have is that they have no class, mess around and have no disciplyn. The whole way they are acting pushes and motivates opponents to really wanna win that game on any cost, work harder and makes the opponents coach easier cause everybody hates Rex & the Gang.

    - they had the 2nd very poor draft in a roe and gave up tons of players for Sanchez, Green and Edwards

    - Maningin was a joke, but Rex to me is a Joke with better DC skills and a louder mouth

  21. GRpatriot says: November 24, 2009 8:09 AM

Rex, you can help anybody you want! You're the Boss.
I suggest you run about a 1000 9 routes, you'll drop that extra person you're carrying around!

By the way, you should have sat Sanchize the turnover machine, for at least half the games this season. Mark wasn't a 4 year starter at USC and it showed! Sometimes you have to learn how "not to lose, before you win!"

  22. Crowder911 says: November 24, 2009 9:11 AM

thank god they are not aging...waaaaaiiiit they are already old. i really hope the cap stays.

The Jets with all their medicore, overpriced ass FA's will bleed.

the Jests better hope Sanch-Ice (seller) turns out to be the sanchise... still think he ll be working at Taco Bell sooooon

  23. NFLMMAfan says: November 24, 2009 9:26 AM

"There's always a lot on my plate," Ryan deadpanned.

    Not for long, though!

The Ravens tried to help Rex polish up his act so he could finally get hired as a head coach.
Step 1. Lose the extra weight.
Step 2. Go to the Dentist.
    Step 3. Get a haircut.
Step 4. Have a written plan.

How is he doing as of today?
Step 1. Gained it all back plus some. Endangers his life. Wake up Rex, before you don't wake up anymore! Look at yourself in a full length mirror. Should be a humbling experience.

Step 2. Stuffing his face with high-fat foods and Coke is not what he was told. The Dentist should wire his jaw shut. This will also help with the press conferences.

Step 3. Get a haircut Rex. But don't stop at the all-you-can-eat before and after. And during.

Step 4. Plan went to his head! He thinks if he speaks louder than everyone else he must know more. Great if you want to be a tabloid loser. Shut up, stop over-eating, and work on making the team better instead of making yourself bigger.

  24. texasPHINSfan says: November 24, 2009 1:45 PM

if ryan's work on the jets defense is any indication of his skills as a coach & motivator, i don't know if i'd want him talking to the offense.
