Clinton Portis still struggles with blurred vision

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis says he still gets blurry vision when he moves his head quickly and won't return to the field until he's completely free of symptoms from the concussion he sustained on November 8.

"My vision, just sitting still, it's fine," Portis told John Thompson on ESPN 980, per the Washington Post. "Moving is when now and then it's blurry. I can sit still and read everything you put up in front of me, but when you move me, shake my head around, that's where my blurriness comes in and we [are] having the focus issues."

Portis has missed two games because of the concussion and expects to miss a third on Sunday against the Eagles, and he said he has visited six or seven doctors. He said he hopes to return on December 6 against the Saints, but he won't be back until he's asymptomatic.

Portis also criticized the Redskins' much-discussed play-calling, saying the Redskins follow "the difficult route for everything we do."

Asked if he had ever heard of a system like the Redskins' Rube Goldberg operation of offensive consultant Sherman Lewis calling the passing plays, offensive coordinator Sherman Smith calling the running plays and head coach Jim Zorn being treated like an outsider, Portis said he hadn't.

"I never have, man, but that's the NFL," Portis said. "That's the Washington Redskins. We somehow, some way, we're going to make things harder. Everything's going to be exposed."

He still struggles with slurred speech, too.

Good, I hope he misses the rest of the season. If I were the trainer, I'd sedate him and shake him violently twice a week

And to think the Steelers arent responsible enough to sit Ben out for at least a game.

As least he's staying out until he's better, if this was 10 years ago Portis would have been playing last week.

I think this concussion thing is for the good, alot of horror stories out there when it comes to retired players suffering health issues (and the equal horror of the Upshaw regime refusing to take care of them while guys like Upshaw raked in like $7 mil a year...)

And the Over/Under on ultra-lame "I didn't know he could read!" posts is: 7.

"...if this was 10 years ago Portis would have been playing last week."

    That blew my mind.

Take the season off Portis, get your ankle surgery done now so your ready for next year. I still will not draft you in fantasy football. Your about as done as LT and Westbrook are.

I read this and immediately thought of Al Toon. If it is also true about the slurred speech he might want to sit at least two weeks AFTER he's symptom free.

its the only one of there many problems,a big problem but they also lost chris cooley, and chris horton for the year

Mr. Portis will consult w/ Mr. Snyder and Mr. Portis will make thye final decision on his status. Zorny will be handed a note from Mr. Portis to read to the media. (Then off the laundry for Zorn, to get Vinny's suits pressed by 5:00pm.) Poor bastard!

Tell him put down the Hennessey, someone should tell Pothead everyone gets blurry vision when they're drunk.

Portis SHOULD be examined by an Independent
Neurologist.... sounds like some further testing needs to be done.

Even before he was hurt he was deemed legally retarded, I dont see why this is a big deal. Not like he is going to cure cancer with that big brain of his after he is done playing football.

Portis is finished anyway, the concussion is just one of his problems.

Portis should go on IR and then hopefully decide to retire before next year.

He is no longer an effective running back, and I never did particularly like his attitude anyway. Everybody knows the Redskins FO is a mess -- his comments above were totally unnecessary and don't help the situation at all.

Daniel M. Snyder is buying this site to control the news that the front office is messed up.

I'll bet he's only saying this to get out of playing for the rest of the season. Who wants to be a part of this losing team?

  19. bake says: November 25, 2009 9:06 AM

he never was one to risk getting hurt- not wanting to play in the preseason, etc. betcha if they were on a playoff run, he'd demand to be in there......typical. shame is, the offense does better when betts is the no. 1, remember when portis missed like the last 7 or 8 games a few years ago, they rolled with betts and did well. Of course now we'll see how Rock Cartwright and Co. handle it.

The Redskins may not be good enough on offense yet to be a winning team, but the players have been working hard, practicing hard, and playing hard... with one notable exception. He never practices unless he feels like it, he's unreasonably critical of his teammates, and he's taken most of this season off anyway. He wouldn't be missed if he was out for the year. The running game has been better without him.

The one I'm sorry to see get hurt is Ladell Betts. He's a team player who works hard in practice every day, and he deserved this chance. Too bad about his injury.

"The Redskins may not be good enough on offense yet to be a winning team, but the players have been working hard, practicing hard, and playing hard..."

All they're missing is the desire to win, according to Coach Frylock.

And all that all the women on Earth are missing is the desire to be anywhere near you, Vox.

    Must be the mullet/mustache combo.
