Concussion committee co-chairmen resign

Last week we noted that the NFL players’ union wanted Dr. Ira Casson removed as co-chairman of the league’s committee on concussions.

Today it was announced that both Casson and his co-chairman, David Viano, have resigned from the concussion committee.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo about concussions to all 32 teams today, and the resignations of Casson and Viano were announced in the memo.  Goodell wrote in the memo that the concussion committee will be strengthened and expanded with new medical experts soon.

The union accused of Casson bias, saying he has tried to discredit research into the long-term consequences of brain injuries suffered on the playing field.  Casson has said research into the long-term consequences of concussions is lacking.

The players can say what they want, but they make a lot of money to crash into each other. Football is a very violent sport and injuries do occur. Rothlisberger took a headshot on Sunday and now he says he is ok to play; do you really think he is ready? The Steelers play the Ravens Sunday in a very important game and they definately need him. Would he be playing if it was Cleveland or Detroit? The Steelers won’t say if he sustained a concussion or not; but the players can’t have it both ways. There should be a mandatory down time if a concussion is sustained.

rjgreen… kudos for some excellent points. Mandatory downtime. Maybe you should be working for the league.

    Complete headline should read:
“Concussion committee co-chairmen resign after DeMaurice Smith threatens to ‘bop them on the head’.”
