Jerry Gray close to escaping the 'Skins

Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray, once regarded as a member of the short list for NFL head-coaching jobs, is close to getting a crack at wearing the whistle, but at the college level.

As John Taylor of CFT points out, multiple reports indicate that Gray will become the next head coach at Memphis.

LSU assistant coach Larry Porter also is under consideration for the job.

Both men are African-American; coupled with last week's decision by Western Kentucky to hire Stanford assistant Willie Taggart, the Memphis move will result in two new minority coaches at NCAA football programs, a dramatic development in an era featuring supposedly liberal university presidents who largely have been doing their best Al Campanis impersonation.

    Best of luck Jerry.

good for Jerry Gray, bad for the 'skins. But he's probably gonna go when a new coach is hired next year and brings his own people to Washington anyway.

as far as the comments about liberal academic presidents, they aren't "supposedly liberal". they are liberal. That's what liberals do. Pretend to be for minorities, only as long as they keep them under their thumb.............

Gray is a great coach. Just look how well he has coached up Landry, Rogers, and Hall in the Skins secondary.

Jerry Gray will be a good HC. Congrats to him!

I don't blame him at all for wanting to bail out of DC -- there's no telling what Snyder and Vinny will do this offseason.

The monolithic notion of the "liberal university" is as useful for analysis as the notion of the "liberal media." In both cases, the reality is much more complex. Modern universities are like corporations and the MBA's in the university administration wield more power than the faculty. Look at the Board of Regents at any major university and you will see a majority of "conservative" business representatives. "Liberal" and "conservative" have become labels for straw-man arguments and the airing of Festivus-like grievances.

ok but still snyder's bound to blow up the coaching staff so Jerry Gray's best bet is to get out whie the gettin's good!!!!!!!!!

And don't pretend that universities by and large are equally conservative and liberal............

What does his race have anything to do with it? Does anyone else see the problem that our society has? No one can remove race blinders from anything.

So Mike, did ya vote for Sen Byrd? If so, how many times?

Did the vocal stylings of the lovely Rev Wright have any basis on your decision to vote for Obama?

Is due the opportunity, hope he gets the gig and is successful. Although a ticket out of DC right now has no downside.

    @ Bake:

Per your comment that "liberals are for minorities as long as they keep them under their thumb."

Thank you! I'm so tired of making that point only to be shot down by dimwitted people who believe cosmetic diversity is as good as the real thing.

Again thanks for letting me know I'm not alone.
