With the Chargers hoping to separate from the pack in the AFC West, assuming the Broncos losing to the Giants on Thursday night, San Diego might be facing the Chiefs on Sunday without linebacker Shawne Merriman.
Merriman missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday with a foot injury.
Also missing practice both days this week was defensive end Luis Castillo, who has a calf injury.
Three players who didn’t practice on Wednesday fully participated on Thursday: receiver Vincent Jackson (ribs), defensive end Travis Johnson (groin), and linebacker Shaun Phillips (ankle).
Center Nick Hardwick, who hasn’t played since badly spraining an ankle in Week One, continues to practice on a limited basis — but not play on Sundays.
“Foot injury” is a code name for V.D.
