Mike Martz wants Bills job

Though the Bills are having a hard time generating much interest among the men at the top of the coaching food chain, the bottom feeders are sure to be interested.

For example, Mike Martz wants the job, according to Tim Graham of ESPN.com.

Yes, Mike Martz.

The same Mike Martz who has been fired in recent years by the Rams, Lions, and 49ers.

Martz has since been unable to get any sniffs, and for good reason.  Apart from his role in creating the Greatest Show on Turf, his reputation for organizational in-fighting and opportunism has undermined his skills.

So while owner Ralph Wilson might not land the likes of Holmgren, Cowher, and Shanahan, Wilson's team likely won't have to settle for a guy who has by all appearances by frozen out of the National Football League.

He would be perfect for the Bills. Perfect.

  2. scrapdawg12 says: November 26, 2009 9:53 AM

He really turned the Lions, Rams and 49ers around didn't he? They are winning playoff game after playoff game.....NOT. Stick to commentating Martz, you stink as a coach.

  3. slutnuts says: November 26, 2009 9:57 AM

but if they hire martz, then the playbook will be updated..currently there is 1 page it says:

1st down: run up the middle
    2nd down: run off tackle
3rd down: throw chek down pass
4th down (dont worry, you won't pick up a first down): punt

  4. bearsrule says: November 26, 2009 9:58 AM

He came out yesterday and said he was not interested in the Bears job. That's great for two reasons: 1. The Bears job isn't open 2. NOBODY, except idiots and the meatballs want anything to do with Martz. If the Bills hire him, Ralph Wilson should be put to sleep.

  5. ParkerFly says: November 26, 2009 9:59 AM

He has a snowball's chance in hell of getting it too.

  6. Treadstone says: November 26, 2009 10:04 AM

Can you imagine him and T.O. on the same team....gitcha popcorn ready!!

  7. HarrisonHits says: November 26, 2009 10:04 AM

Oh good, another 3 or 4 years of the Bills in disarray. Martz would be fine for the rest of the AFC East.

  8. Gordon Getgo says: November 26, 2009 10:06 AM

Charlie Weis as head coach, Romeo running the D and Chris Palmer running the O.

  9. zangy says: November 26, 2009 10:07 AM

At least they would generate some offense with Martz...oh wait, he can only do that when he inherits a team from a HOF coach

  10. dave0320 says: November 26, 2009 10:09 AM

Mike Farts would be a great fit for the Faiders.

  11. brownsfn says: November 26, 2009 10:10 AM

Hopefully soon Mangini will be in that some boat...

Florio, go be with your family on thanksgiving. We'll all forgive you if we don't get our PFT for one day.

I dont have a problem with Martz. Like I said earlier this year when everybody was singing the praises of Singletary, Martz built that team not Singletary. So if anyone should have gotten credit for the 49ers success it should have been Martz. Though your probly right he causes alot of problems with his micromanging. I think he can still make a team better.

He seems like he does a good job with personel. So he might be better suited for a job as a GM. That way he can still use his talents but have so distance between him and his players.

I like Martz - but can't see a passing guru succeeding in balmy Buffalo.

  15. marquezjol says: November 26, 2009 10:18 AM

    Haven't they suffered enough?

  16. schism says: November 26, 2009 10:21 AM

Ralph could pay him 300,000 a year and stil get to 7-9

  17. Alzado's Vein says: November 26, 2009 10:21 AM

Stay away from this guy, hes the offensive version of Jauron.

  18. BasicInstinct says: November 26, 2009 10:22 AM

I may be a total idiot, but what exactly is wrong with Mike Martz other than he got rid of Kurt Warner who's broken pinky made him suck at passing?

Honestly, Marty Schottenheimer would probably have them in the playoffs in one year.

The bottom line with the Head coaching gig is that you bet your job with the choice of you quarterback, with the insurance being the choice of your running back.

The tide of your team rides with the health of your quarterback.

Cowher did it with Big Ben. Shanahan had Big John. Holmgren had big Bret.

    How big is your quarterback?

  19. Bob Loblaw says: November 26, 2009 10:25 AM

You forgot to mention he isn't a very smart coach either. I've seen him waste replay challenges on plays that would net a two-yard gain in the first quarter.

  20. GRpatriot says: November 26, 2009 10:25 AM

Mike Martz isn't the answer in Bill's Land.

They've had enough also rans. Ralph should hire a fresh face. Hope he lives long enough to see the turn-around.

  21. Rev. Dr. HollywoodWags says: November 26, 2009 10:32 AM

    No mention of Turley?

  22. nasheagles says: November 26, 2009 10:37 AM

With those Receivers why wouldn't he want it... their a few OL and QB away from being a really good offensive team.... Martz may be a little reckless-- but they will score points and be fun to watch

  23. swervinmervin says: November 26, 2009 10:40 AM

He can make an offense go. Look at him in Detroit. That team had no talent and at least they did a little bit of something when he was there. The minute he left they went winless for a full season.

In SF it just wasnt going to work because the HCs (Nolan/Singletary) were defense minded and that mindset is contrary to everything Martz is.

He is a winner as a HC and OC. He'll make some team better.

I laughed when I read the headline.

    NO THANKS.

  25. TFBuckFutter says: November 26, 2009 10:52 AM

My money is on the Browns firing Mangini and immediately hiring Martz before someone else snaps him up.

  26. BuffaloMike says: November 26, 2009 11:02 AM

    absolutely, unequivocally no.

Martz didn't build dick in SF. He froze out Shaun Hill in the 2008 training camp and rode with JTO until Singletary sent him to the pine. I'll admit that when Singletary went to Hill, Martz did an excellent job adjusting to his skill set and the offense moved the ball pretty consistently.

My point is, Martz is an excellent coordinator but I wouldn't trust him as my HC any further than I could throw him.

  28. JoeSixPack says: November 26, 2009 11:03 AM

Martz should go to the Browns. Lerner thinks the best coaches are the ones that have been fired.

  29. slothism says: November 26, 2009 11:11 AM

Florio you are often dispicable. Mike Martz has more honor in his pinky than you do in your entire body. What exactly has Mike Martz failed at?

The Bills might be well served to have an offensive mind that can actually utilize a guy like Marshawn Lynch. Perhaps you forget the offense that Martz put together in St. Louis. The guy revolutionized the passing game and took a quarterback who had been bagging groceries and gave him a system to catapult him to stardom.

  30. Gordon Getgo says: November 26, 2009 11:16 AM

The problem isn't Martz's system... it is his playcalling which often defies logic and strategy.

  31. SmackMyVickUp says: November 26, 2009 11:26 AM

Should stay a O-coord, some people just can't handle a HC job but work wonders as coordinators.

  32. mustbechris says: November 26, 2009 11:30 AM

martz should go to the browns and mangini should go to the bills. that would be perfect.

  33. VonClausewitz says: November 26, 2009 11:34 AM

Gotta love the psychology behind the Mike Martz phenomenon. Somehow he's been cast as The Bad Guy. One imagines this has something to do with the dysfunctional front office in St. Louis really trying to stick it to him using the only thing they were ever really good at - spreading rumors. And no matter what he does the stigma of being The Bad Guy has stuck. You can't change people's minds if they're unwilling to accept reality.

Here's how this zombielike denial plays out when you talk to one of these Mike Martz is the Devil people. (For entertainment purposes only)

    Zombie: He's a jerk!

Non-zombie: Maybe. Does he seem like a jerk on tv? No. Maybe he's just human. And even if he were jerkish what difference does it make? Have you seen the other coaches in the league?

Z: Oh no but he's also a micromanager.

NZ: Hold on didn't he make each of his teams perform better than they did before or after?

Z: Ok forget that last argument, it's well known (ed: a euphemism for lie) that he's power hungry, so there!

NZ: Weren't all the places he came in as an OC teams with losing records where the coach was on the hot seat? And didn't he defer to the wishes of the coach at all times?

Z: Um...hold on while I examine my book of excuses. Oh yeah, his scheme is very complicated! Haha try that one on for size.

NZ: That what "they" say but he's managed to take relatively unskilled players and have them perform at the highest levels of their careers right?

Z: Yeah but he's never had success with a HOF qb like Warner.

NZ: The same thing can be said of every big name coach. Didn't he take Detroit, perennial losers and make their offense work? John Kitna had his first 4000 yard season at age 34 with them. John Kitna. And the Lions had a 7-9 record. The year after he left they went 0-16, and now they're 2-8.

    Z: Yeah but he's a jerk.

    And so forth...

  34. Farves sweet Hair says: November 26, 2009 11:54 AM

he is what you'd call a retred

  35. slipkid says: November 26, 2009 12:26 PM

nice plug for the pantsless wonder (singletary) but he went back to smith this year. everyone has hill decoded.

martz CAN get an offense rolling. if the bills had martz they probly would be 5-5. they would be scoring 20 points a game. they are staring down the barrel of a 4-12 season. with martz... 7-9.

and maybe she-ho would be happy.

  36. slipkid says: November 26, 2009 1:08 PM

martz hollered for the lions to draft calcin, which was good.

but his drafting in st. loo was pretty lousy toward the end, and some say he did it in order to screw a franchise, that was using jay zygmunt to screw him.

  37. FumbleNuts says: November 26, 2009 1:42 PM

If you have a Great O-line and a smart QB, the Mike Martz system is just what the doctor ordered.

If you don't, Martz should be your last option.
