Bearcats coach drops strong hint regarding Weis' fate

It's hardly a surprise.  With the powers-that-be at Notre Dame telling coach Charlie Weis that, in lieu of hitting the recruiting trail after the regular-season finale in Palo Alto, he should return promptly to South Bend, even a triple-digit win over the Stanford Cardinal won't save him at this point.

But the most tangible piece of evidence regarding Weis' fate comes not from Indiana but from Ohio, where Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly told ESPN's Bob Griese before Friday's game against Illinois that a decision will be made regarding a possible flight to the Fighting Irish in the next seven to 10 days.

So what will be next for Weis?  He'll surely land on his feet in the NFL.

In New England, for example, there's currently no one with the title of offensive coordinator.

Perhaps coach Bill Belichick intentionally left the spot vacant this season in the event that Weis would be available.

The Chiefs also don't have an offensive coordinator, either.  Chan Gailey was removed from the job before the season started, and coach Todd Haley has absorbed the duties.  The strong connection between Haley, Weis, and G.M. Scott Pioli to Bill Parcells makes the hiring of Weis a no brainer.

If worst comes to worst, Parcells likely would find something for Weis in Miami, given that it was Parcells who gave Weis his first shot at NFL coaching.

Or maybe Weis could decide to simply take some time off and collect the balance of the long-term deal that Notre Dame gave him at a time when ongoing rumors of an NFL head-coaching gig were hampering Weis' ability to recruit.

In the end, Weis was able to recruit -- but he wasn't able to get enough out of those recruits to win enough games.

What? No mention of "Weis working for free" if he takes a job before 2013 or something?

  2. merrillhodgestoupee says: November 27, 2009 12:50 PM

Thinking he will end up in KC as Asst. Head Coach/O Coordinator.

I doubt Charlie will return to NE or go to KC. I am sure he still remembers the fact that NE didn't want to pay him. Also, IIRC he wanted to spend more time with his family. I would bet he takes some time off while collecting his $.

Don't forget about Cleveland. We have a rookie Offensive Coordinator that really sucks and will be the first person fired at the end of the season. This would reunite Weis with Quinn. Remember it was Weis offensive schemes that made Quinn what it was, so it could be a match made in heaven.

Is the body even cold yet?

  6. JSpicoli says: November 27, 2009 12:53 PM

Maybe he, Mangina and Romeo Crennell can start an improve group.

I wonder if Belicheck will make Weis wipe the frozen boogers from his nose when they get into cold weather?

I think its a bit too late for Weiss to come back to the Pats, the offense has changed dramatically from when he was OC. Not sure he would fit in well any more.

Weis was the Tuna's ballboy and fixed him up some coffee, you'd figure he could have kept his weight down being a "yes boy".

Or he can head over to the New York Giants when they fire Kevin Gilbride.

Brian Kelly just needs to shut his yap regarding the ND job. He's totally disrespecting Cincinnati and Coach Weis.

I've never heard a current coach talk more about his next possible coaching position than Brian Kelly.

    Enough already!

Mind-boggling how this country continues to embrace then reward abject failures.

Maybe he, Mangina and Romeo Crennell can start an improv group.

I am a huge ND fan and I have been wishing for Weis to be fired since last year. He doesn't have the intelligence to be a head coach anywhere. He's an outstanding coordinator and is great with young qbs. IE Clausen and Quinn. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Dallas next year. I think Wade will be canned because Dallas will implode at seasons end or playoffs. Jerry will then make Garrett the HC and would name Weis OC. That would be a hell of a 1-2 punch for the offense. I also could see Weis as OC in Buffalo, Cleveland, Carolina, NY Jets, Houston, Denver to help Orton, Miami, Seattle, Chicago to help Cutler, or Washington. What do you folks think? BTW, I'm hoping for Kelly or Miles to be the next HC at ND!

    @JSpicoli,

I might pay to see that.

send Weiss and Friedgen to the Jets, then they'll always have an advantage cause the stadium will be tilted to one side with Rex there too.

  18. ampats says: November 27, 2009 1:44 PM

TeHD, do you really think that Weis would consider being a OC under the RAT?

  19. Supersuckers says: November 27, 2009 1:46 PM

Speaking of turds and shits we have a annual turd contest up here in the state of Minnesota. next year it will be called Big Turd2010. How it works is after you take a dump and turn around to admire its size and width (you know you do it) you snap a photo on your cell phone of the shit, single or double tapered it doesn't matter, and send it via email with your name to a email address i will provide you if you are interested. There is a nominal $5 entry fee which goes to the prize pool and maintenance costs of the website. At the end of the year our panel of judges will selects ten turds to be sent back out to all the people that entered a turd that year for a mass vote. Winner takes all as far as the cash and possesses the traveling trophy for the next years contest. Would you be interested? If so send me your email as we like to send out a mailer and a welcome packet

He won't go to Cleveland if Mangina the Rat is the HC but the new coach would be smart to team Weis with Quinn again and then draft Golden Tate.
KC makes sense as does a return to New England. He and Brady were very close and I think Weis helped make Brady the greatest QB of all time.

I can already hear the excuses from domers as to why dame will suck next year.we have a new coach and system and of coarse my all time favorite one,we don't have the players!right after fatboy brought in the top classes we have heard about for 4 years!I don't care who the next coach is I will always root for them and thier god made us #1 arrogant fans to lose!

What kind of an improve (sic) group? Home improvement? Self improvement?

  23. FireJerryJones says: November 27, 2009 3:16 PM

Yep. He could go back to New England, cause the offense really sucks there.

Buffalo and Cleveland are also possibilities.

  24. tom coughlin's coat holder says: November 27, 2009 3:48 PM

@shockandawe weis and coughlin go back a long way together, they were on the original parcells giants teams.after that dreadful display last night, they certainly could use a person who would put his size eleven up some peoples collective asses.i don't think it's eli that's the culprit here.what has happened to the offensive line?i can't believe they have gone from the top to the bottom so rapidly.
the giants are definitely in need of regime change.it's gotten to the point that they are unwatchable.

  25. DJSlyBri says: November 27, 2009 4:41 PM

Someone tell Notre Dame it isn't the 1960's anymore and they are a run of the mill team, no different than UConn and Pitt, for example.

  26. TeHDruiD says: November 27, 2009 5:33 PM

I agree he wouldn't come here if Mangini was still here. But I believe Mangini is gone as soon as the new GM is hired. Mangini will be gone, so it's a none issue.
