Cowher says he won't talk to teams with "current head coach"

I wasn't able to watch The NFL Today on Thursday, due to a unfortunate turkey-and-stuffing (and schnapps) induced stupor.  So I'm now rolling the DVR, and at the top of the CBS pregame show former Steelers coach Bill Cowher addressed his current job status.

"I've spoken to no teams and I don't intend to do so while there's a current head coach," Cowher said.  "Listen, this is a pivotal time of the year, and these coaches deserve to have the full support of their organizations.  So I'm telling you I've talked to nobody."

It's unclear whether, in Cowher's mind, the Bills have a "current head coach," since their head coach already has been fired.  Still, there's no reason for Cowher or Mike Shanahan or any other name at the top of the "A" list to get serious about any specific job until the dust settles at the end of the season.

Besides, Cowher doesn't need to talk to anyone to ensure that there will be sufficient buzz about him come January.  After he flirted last year with the Browns and the Jets, the fairly clear message was that Cowher would be coming back for 2010.

So once Black Monday comes and goes, let the bidding for Bill Cowher begin.

I am glad the Steelers do things right with coaches, it is definitely a crucial building block for a solid franchise.

Probably the MOST OVERRATED coach of all time!!

Hang on Bill. After the Eagles fall apart we will need you.

Arguably, the Redskins do not have a "current head coach."

I guess Bill could make the easy choice and coach the Panthers. Problem is that he knows that the passion for football as he knows it resides in the northern teams. And the successful southern teams? I doubt JJ is what he envisions as a comfortable situation.
I would also bet that when the dust settles, he's going to want to coach the Bills. Blue collar city, never a question of a home field sell out and the people who are the same as in Pittsburgh. There is nowhere in football nation that is more hungry than Buffalo, and he may also end up with a piece of the team..

oh good GRIEF. Good thing you don't work anywhere in the NFL.

After what happened to the Marty, who would work under the Danny or Al Davis or Jerry Jones... None of the big names will work under those 3 owners / GMs

  12. HarrisonHits says: November 27, 2009 11:05 AM

None of the A list coaches will want the Bills, the Raiders or the Browns. The ownership is so bad that all the best guys will run screaming into the night before the go to one of those teams.

  13. danielcp0303 says: November 27, 2009 11:17 AM

hey johnster...Jerry just got a billion dollar stadium built, has a history of bringing in great players and winning, and can spend as much money as he wants on coaches. Yeah, I think he could get big named coaches, it's just that there aren't any out there. Cowher, Mike S, Gruden are all overrated.

I would agree with the over rated comment. That list would also include Jeff Fisher, Tony Dungy, Brian Bilick.....

NO. The Chin wants to do things the right way with respect for a "Chain of Command". Little Danny and Vinny don't understand "organization". They are "parts-changers" not systematic builders.

Maybe Little Danny can have more one-on-one sessions with his players thereby by-passing his coaching staff.......

It's truly a coaching fraternity, and Cower still belongs. It's a fraternity minus the toga parties, however, try to imagine coaches Reid and Mcarthy in togas, urps up yesterday's turkey doesn't it?

"After what happened to the Marty, who would work under the Danny or Al Davis or Jerry Jones"

OK, the Raiders haven't won more than 5 games in a season since 2002. The Deadskins are what they always are since fanboi Snyder bought the team. The Cowboys lead their division and haven't had a losing season since 2004... why are you grouping Jerry Jones with those abject failures?

if by bad ownership in buffalo you mean an owner who has managed to sustain some of the highest profits in the NFL despite a small, cash strapped market, then yes, Buffalo has bad ownership. But I guess you're right about 'A' list coaches not wanting to come to Buffalo; that is if you ignore fact that Ralph has expressed interest in shelling out some real cash for a coach this time around coupled with the fact that the media in buffalo is quite possibly the easiest media in the league for a coach to deal with. However if you actually take into account these pieces of pretty simple knowledge, you'd see that there is no reason an A list coach wouldnt want to come to Buffalo. Of course, using this type of logical thinking is much more than we can all expect from a Harrison fan, so we forgive you.

Even if Wilson were the best owner on earth, all good things must end--including Ralph Wilson. He's in his 90s. It's been reported his heirs don't want to run the franchise. The team may be sold and moved. Why would Cowher, after 14 years in the league's most stable franchise, want that kind of chaos? Ditto with Snyder. Can you imagine trading the no-drama Rooneys for Danny Boy? Or Jerry Jones?

Though he played for the Browns, the Steelers were his hometown team, and out of respect for the Rooneys, I don't think he'd go within the division. The Maras are closer to the Rooneys in temperament, and from the looks of things, they may be in the market. But the family's happy in Carolina, so I'd bet on the Panthers for Cowher.

Gruden might be a good fit for Dallas. Young, energetic. Offensive mind. Good w/QBs. Will pander to Jerry.

Well Mr Cower, according to your principles, then you can go ahead and meet right now with:

    Buffalo
    Oakland
    Washington
    NYJ
    Cleveland
sad to say, I'd have to include SanFran... sorry to my buddy Mike for that.

They haven't had head coaches all season...or for several seasons...

Why on God's Green Earth would someone with the resume of Bill Cowher want to go work for a team that is treated like second class citizens in it's own city? Management sucks (so long as Tannebaum has Woddy's ear), the fans go back and forth between screaming "Super Bowl Bound!" and "Just End The Season!" (the switch in sayings usually comes between Sep/Oct and Nov/Dec), and the media only pays attention when the Giants are on a Bye week.

Besides the one Super Bowl 100 years ago and the few years Parcells was there, the Jets are a league laughingstock right up there with Oakland and Cleveland. A few productive years, but overall year in year out shit.

We all know what these coaches think and what they want, but in the next breathe will claim you can't believe a word they say because all they do is put of smoke screens.

I'm sure you won't have interest in the Chicago gig since the McCaskey's are a continuous "fly in the ointment" in regards to progress. Besides that, you'd pose a threat to Jerry Angelo who would no longer be needed and he wouldn't be able to laugh all the way to the bank every month when he's payed for doing squat! For what it's worth, as a long time Bear fan, I'd welcome Cowher with open arms, only if it meant we could clear out the parasites that are currently plaguing us in the present....... Scram McCaskey's!!!
