Jerry Gray not leaving Redskins for Memphis

Several reports this week said that Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray would become the next head coach at Memphis.

Now it appears that Gray is not getting the Memphis job.

Multiple reports out today say Memphis will actually hire LSU assistant Larry Porter. Gray indicated to ESPN's Joe Schad that he's not getting a head-coaching job at the moment, although he added, "one day it will be the right opportunity."

It's not clear what the next opportunity for Gray will be. He's a well-respected coach, but considering that the Redskins don't know who their head coach next year will be, there's no guarantee that his job in Washington is safe. Just days after thinking he had a head-coaching gig lined up, Gray may need to start thinking about whether he'll have a job after this season.

Gray probably told Memphis he won't be taking the job because Dan Snyder asked him to stay to become the next defensive coordinator. Blache probably told Snyder that he will be retiring after this season.

Don't be surprised if Gray even gets the HC position, when Zorn is fired.

Secondary coach to Head Coach in the NFL? WOW, I've NEVER heard of that happening before. There's some genius behind that thinking!

Gray might be the best DB coach in the league. If he doesn't stay with the Redskins it'll be because some other team offered him a DC or HC position.

So Jerry Gray, and not Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden?

Don't forget that Gray was Greg Williams' defensive coordinator in Buffalo for a few years, and actually took a demotion to join the Redskins. So it's not far fetched to think that he will at least have the opportunity to interview for the HC job.

So any comparisons to a certain position coach who immaculately ascended the ladder to be the head honcho are moot at this point.

As for Shanahan et al, I don't think Snyder has it in him to relinquish complete control on the football side just yet. And we all know what that group of former Super Bowl-winning HC's require to put pen on paper.
