Broncos coach Josh McDaniels previously has kept mostly quiet regarding the allegation from Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips that McDaniels said to Phillips before last Sunday’s game between the two teams, “We own you.”
McDaniels now tells Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder of ESPN that Phillips provoked McDaniels.
“I was two or three steps out of the tunnel when Shaun Phillips raced
up to me with his helmet off and said, ‘I’ll kick your [expletive] ass,
too,’” McDaniels said. (It would be a real hoot if the deleted expletive was “mutherf–king“.) “I’m not saying I felt physically
threatened but that’s exactly the way it went down. It surprised me in
a way but we played them a lot when I was in New England and he’s
always been that kind of guy.
“I wasn’t out there
trash-talking their players, going through their drills. This guy has
been doing this since I’ve been in the league and, because they won, he
takes the liberty of telling his side of the story. I didn’t swear at
him or threaten him. What I actually said was, ‘I’ve heard the same
thing from you for four or five years now, and when I was in New
England, we owned you.’”
McDaniels also said that the Broncos have asked the league to investigate the incident, presumably since the rules have been tweaked in recent years to keep this kind of stuff from happening.
Chargers spokesman Bill Johnston told ESPN that the team didn’t know of the allegations and that “we’re not going to lower ourselves by responding.”
Sorry, but the Chargers wouldn’t be “lowering themselves” by saying whether Phillips did or didn’t say what he said. The Chargers, through Phillips, already have engaged the Broncos on this issue. With McDaniels telling his story, the Chargers and/or Phillips should respond.
It seems the Chargers didn’t know about McDaniels’ version of the events because he didn’t call coach Norv Turner to tell him about it. Though we realize that the Broncos were operating on a short week, we think that, if McDaniels were planning to go public with this situation, he should have at least given Turner a courtesy call — especially if McDaniels also planned to offer an opinion that Turner should be “livid” about the situation.
McDaniels’ decision to talk on the record about the situation seems to be part of a calculated effort to prove that the first-year coach isn’t a “renegade,” given his recent “F” bomb on NFL Network, allegations from Steelers safety Ryan Clark that McDaniels’ taunts players, and a postgame Hulk Hogan routine after the Broncos beat the Patriots in October.
Our take? It’s too late for McDaniels to alter the first impression he’s made on the league at large.

I don’t even see what McDaniels has done wrong here … Why should he have to listen to Shaun Phillips threatening him like that? And out of interest, why were people so quick to believe Phillips’ side of things? He has always been a complete moron that trash talks without being able to back it up.
The fact is, Shaun Phillips has tainted Josh McDaniels’ reputation by coming out and saying what he said, so Josh has tried to correct that.

I’ve lost alot of respect for McDaniels because of his mouth over the last couple of weeks. Now he just seems like a punk.
McDaniels is a quality guy and extremely bright. The Chargers are always mouthing off to people. The only time I like them is when they beat the Colts. McDaniels is about the size of Wes Welker so it’s a definite mismatch.
So the Chargers heard some bad language and they immediately went running to Principal Goodell?
There’s a reason they’ve never won anything, except the AFC West.

The NFL wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for the AFL.

The Chargers could be the one franchise in all of sports that continues to underachieve consistently through the decades. It’s no accident that they are polluted with punks like Phillips, Merriman, and others like them. McDaniels has a long memory.

I love everyone on here making clever jokes about Joshy being 12 years old. I’m sure all of you guys can tell him how it was when you were head coaches in the NFL.
It’s an interesting phenemenon. People complain that the Bill Belichicks and Tony Dungys of the world don’t show enough emotion. People complain that the League was over the top in making John Randle stop running out the face paint nightrider look. In short, people complain that the NFL is the No Fun League because it implements rules and fines for its participants exhibiting too much emotion.
Then, low and behold – people complain when the participants exhibit too much emotion. T.O., Steve Smith, Deion Sanders, Brandon Marshall, Ocho Cinco and others are lambasted as douchebags. Now Shaun Phillips is inflaming a number of the masses. Josh McDaniel is getting skewered for being some kind of an F-bomb dropping shit-talking Doogie Howser/Hulk Hogan hybrid – with many demanding the League get involved to curtail such behavior.
I personally am not complaining about the human condition touched on above — because I realize that I too am guilty of complaining in ways that later seem to contradict prior complaints. Just find the human dynamic kind of interesting that way.

I’m the biggest Charger fan around, a season tix holder, and even I’ll tell you that Phillips is a punk. Him, Merriman, Cromartie, and S. Cooper are all constantly out partying in Diego acting like typical athletes with God complexes. Just look at this latest champagne bottle incident with Cromartie. Not to mention his 9 illegitimate kids from 8 different mothers.
That being said, we still have class acts that are great in the community like Phillip Rivers, LT, Antonio Gates, Luis Castillo, Quentin Jammer, Nick Hardwick, etc.
