With the Browns still searching for a new leader of the franchise's football operations and Dolphins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells free to cash out the rest of his contract and leave for another gig at any time, it was inevitable that Parcells' name would emerge as a candidate for the job in Cleveland.
And, per a league source, it has.
Though we've previously heard that Parcells will be back in Miami for the third year of his four-year deal, predictability and Parcells are hardly synonymous. The man is a master at building and capitalizing on leverage, and the 2010 hiring cycle prevents him with a prime opportunity to do so, again.
Even if he fully intends to return to the Dolphins, the fact that Parcells previously has used his best poker face to convert a small window of opportunity to leave Miami and receive the balance of his salary upon the sale of controlling interest in the team into an open-ended rip cord to walk away at any time with the balance of his pay in his pockets suggests to us that, at a minimum, Parcells will play any interest from the Browns into a sizable raise from Stephen Ross, new owner of the Dolphins.
So regardless of whether the Browns or the Dolphins or someone else secure Parcells' services for 2010, Parcells will once again emerge as a winner.
UPDATE: As it turns out, there was an "Internet report" a week ago linking Parcells to the Cleveland job, from a writer who typically refers to Internet reports simply as "Internet reports," without mentioning the source of the "Internet reports." But since we practice what we preach, we'll run the link to the "Internet report" anyway. Frankly, we didn't previously know about the "Internet report"; we found out about it when the writer contacted us after we posted the same rumor this morning, and chastised us for not giving him proper attribution. He has now gotten proper attribution.

Dear God,
Please make this happen. I would go to church every Sunday if this happened. I started questioning your existence thanks to this season but if this happens I will follow the Good Book to a T.
Love,
Ammo
PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAASE! I'm so sick of not caring about football! Bring in the Tuna!
Parcells to Cleveland would be too great. I dont think anyone in the NFL has the track record of re-building franchise after franchise the way Parcells has done over his career, the man knows the NFL and is a future HOF'er. If Randy Lerner could somehow lure him from Miami that would be incredible.
Please. While I know this is a rumor, this is ridiculous to even consider. If I were Ross, I would send a few travel brochures Tuna's way. Let him know that he cant be played. If the rumor were Tampa, then I might buy into it.
How long would it take Matt Roth to ask for his release this time?
Wow! That fourth paragraph is a single sentence! Impressive...
I hope he doesn't punch any of LeBron's friend or he'll end up back with the Jets.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Parcells tells Brady Quinn that he can't play in the NFL. Not to mention, his making Mangini ride the stationary bike like Terrell Owens used to do.
WOW! This article is worthless. His name emerged as a candidate??? Come on man.
This is meant as a rip on Parcells, and its not a rip on those pursuing money well beyond what they and 5 generations of heirs could ever spend.
But what is the gain here? If he is happy in Miami, why not just be happy in Miami? Why try to squeeze more nickels out of the owner?
Its like Madden and athlete's foot ads. Really do you still need the money to do ads for killing foot fungus?
Pat Summeral is out looking like death doing TV ads. The voice is still as strong as ever. But are we going to watch him decay before our eyes? Really to what end?
And then there are the likes of Magic Johnson and others doing ads for Rent a Center and some doing pay day loan ads. Businesses known for feeding on the poor or those who are ignorant to the other options they have rather then paying these enormous interest rates and fees.
Magic and the others must know these places are a benefit to few of their customers. Yet they will take the paycheck to advertise them, even though cash is not a concern for them.
Seems to me there comes a time to enjoy the money you have and stop trying to earn more and more at all costs. (I do understand that for some the earning is the thrill)
There is NO WAY he is coming to Cleveland...so just stop it now...
Parcells makes sense for Lerner because it has been rumored that Parcells likes Mangini. If Lerner can convince Parcells to come to Cleveland that would kill 2 birds with one stone.
1/Mangini would stay which I believe Lerner wants, and 2/ it gives Lerner a strong willed person (Parcells) running the operation and a guy who will control Mangini.
so you start by saying that a rumor has him coming to cleveland, then finish by saying a source has him staying in miami. way to create a story. great journalism.
I'm with brownsfn, because I know better than to get my hopes up. However, if he did come to Cleveland, it'd be the best thing to happen to this franchise in the Super Bowl era.
A more likely scenario is they move Cleveland to Miami.
Hes far closer to making a real team where he is than in Cleveland. Perhaps once they achieve something, then he will be a serious candidate to move. Lerner is a pawn here.
@hotchick - shut your socialist mouth, you have no right to determine what is "enough" for someone to earn in this country. would you turn down a raise at your job? If you would then you are probably doing better than most and probably don't "need" all those things you have, if you wouldn't turn down the raise, then why are you being so greedy, obviously you've got enough time to go on here and bitch about people trying to earn a living, how dare you do the same in return. Its people like you that are the problem in america, you always want to tell others when they've had enough, when in reality you have no right and are probably benifiting from their work ethic. It is wrong to swindle, but if the guy can get a 1-2 million dollar a year raise, then by all means go for it. people that have a whole lot more money than you think he's worth it, so once again, shut your socialist mouth and get back to work at acorn.
Cleveland once again becomes leverage for someone to cash in. Tuna stays in Miami and soaks up the rays.
@hotchick probably doesn't think Tuna paid enough alimony.
Parcells loves the challenge of fixing broken organizations. What is wrong with someone taking on another challenge and making a lot of money doing it? "That being said", Cleveland doesn't seem like a city that makes sense for Parcells. He's an east coast guy. Dallas may have been an exception. But he's been to NY, New England, New York, Dallas, and Miami. Cleveland doesn't seem to fit in there. Washington would make sense as a next move. But he would never work for that idiot.
The tuna can turn Cleveland around. It all starts with the draft and free agency. Tank the season Cleveland and get the highest draft pick you can.
Aaaahhhh, Paaaarceeeells. The SAVIOR. Let us go to the scorecard. Retired from the NFL in May after winning his second and last SB [thank you Scott Norwood] leaving the Giants to try and find a HC at that late date. Tried negotiating with New England to get out of his contract DURING the week leading up to SB XXXI. Again retired from the Jets HC position and named Belichick his replacement, only he forgot one thing and that was to ask Belichick first. OOOOPS. Again unretired to take HC job in Dallas. After 4 years with no playoff wins, his services were no longer required so he retired yet again. After less than a year of another retirement, he leveraged his way into Miami after playing them against Atlanta. So here we sit again, another desperate team [Cleveland] willing to chase a guy who will most likely be looking for his next job within days of moving into his new office in Cleveland.
If you guys in Cleveland are smelling tuna, maybe it's the lake?
I love the idea of Parcells coming to Cleveland. Although Mangini is connected to Parcells there is no way Parcells would keep Mangini around. For that matter there is no GM that would keep Mangini around. Mangini is simply one of the 3 worst coaches in the past 45 years (all NYJ coaches Holtz, Kotite and Mangini). Not soley because of his football ability but because he is one of the worst human beings ever connected to the NFL. I would not say Mangini is "evil" per se just that he is extremely young and immature, has a huge ego and is always willing to hurt someone else if it benefits himself.
NOT A CHANCE. THE THOUGHT IS OBSURD!
He currently has all the autonomy he could want in Miami, with a team that MAY go someplace one day. Why would he EVER consider going to a dysfunctional operation with a dysfunctional owner?
Parcells makes sense for Lerner because it has been rumored that Parcells likes Mangini. If Lerner can convince Parcells to come to Cleveland that would kill 2 birds with one stone.
----
Why would he like Mangenious? Thats just stupid he wouldnt hire anyone he didn't work with. Besides his best friend Romeo Crennel was fired by Lerner. Idiot
Besides, he wouldn't leave Sparano without completing his 3 year plan.
Another thing, If Fat-Ass Lerner wanted an awesome GM, perhaps he should have taken out his wallet for Paoli. What an a-hole.
Think Florio's 100 word fourth paragraph says 'leverage'.
Even tho I'm a Packers fan, I love and respect the Tuna. But let's be real. Dude needs to spend more than two years at one location. We all know he can get it done. But he hasn't been anywhere long enough to do so in many, many years.
Tuna likes the challenge. He's said it himself it's not about money - he has all the money he wants. Cleveland would make a lot of sense, but so would Chicago and Buffalo. The question is, does he think he's done enough in Miami or is there still work to do?
My tinfoil thoughts:
I think Tuna wants to compete against the best.
You'll notice that he's only worked in 2 divisions, AFC and NFC east. Both of which have some of the oldest and most successful franchises in the league. And both of which have some of the best teams currently. There are 2 other divisions like this, with the same history and competition. The AFC and NFC north. Also cold weather east coast teams. And home to the Browns and Bears respectively. If I were to guess I think he'd like to make his mark in those divisions next. Whether that's with the Browns pitted against Pittsburgh or it's the Bears against the Vikes and GB. Chicago's a bigger more high profile market. If he turned that franchise around he'd be a god in the city for life. Cleveland and Buffalo don't have anything to compare to that. So I'd guess if Parcells leaves Miami he'd go to Chicago first, then Cleveland, and then Buffalo. Again this is complete tinfoil speculation.
Please come to CLE, Mr. Tuna. Your turnaround services are desperately needed. Lerner's a billionaire and loves to throw $$ in to Lake Erie.
On a slightly different note, Tony Grossi's a bum. Better give Slick, his credit or he'll whine about it. JERK. Somebody should call Sam Rutigliano to kick Grossi's arse.
if Lerner pays the tuna enough to get him to cleveland, i'll take back everything bad i've ever said about that sorry excuse of an owner (including that last remark).
Browns are probably being used for leverage again , however the Browns may be able to give Parcells what he really wants, a piece of the team. Watching celebs and other athletes become part-owners in Miami has to be eating at him a little. Also the chance to make something work in the town that Belicheck failed in would put a twinkle in his eye.
can you say leverage, no way he comes to a dead end like the Browns.
Guys like the Tuna and the Walrus have BIG EGOS. They both want to be in a history rich team like the Browns and turn them around. Would not be surprised if one of them comes to the North Coast.
yeah even as a fins fan i'm questioning how great parcells actually is. let's see him or one of his teams win a playoff game before we start annointing him a great savior.
watching the fins this year, it is clear that the "turnaround" from 1-15 to 11-5 was more due to a lucky landing of pennington at QB and a bad schedule in 2007 combined with a great schedule in 2008 than "good management/coaching."
this is a team that parcells has "built" that still has very little talent on offense outside of ronnie & ricky, and we can't stay at .500. In other words, initially i was drinking the kool aid too, but now i'm not so optimistic. if parcells jumps ship from miami without them winning a playoff game, i'd lose pretty much all respect for parcells. He will have raped millions upon millions from the franchise without giving much back.
i think a lot of names have become candidates. i would stay in sunny miami instead of moving to freezing cold cleveland if i was tuna.
He STAYS in MIAMI until he wins the Super Bowl for the Dolphins
Holmgren used Cleveland to get his way in Seattle. Parcells will use Cleveland in much the same way.
What ever happened to Schottenheimer? Wouldn't he have an incentive to come back to Cleveland just to prove how wrong Art Modell was?
Can you imagine how long Mangenius would last under Marty? Lerner wouldn't have to fire him for cause, Eric would just leave!
