With rumors and speculation swirling that former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis will retreat to New England and rejoin a coaching staff that based on Monday night’s performance in New Orleans needs all the help it can get, Patriots coach Bill Belichick says that there’s no current move to bring Weis back.
“Right now my focus is on the Miami Dolphins, and getting ready to go down there and play a tough division game on the road,” Belichick said Tuesday, per Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald. “That’s where I’m at right now. There are going to be situations like that -- there have been every year -- where things happen on other teams and on other coaching staffs or player rumors and so forth. Anything along that nature is something that would be addressed at a later point in time. It’s not anything that is on the front burner at all.”
The fact that Belichick, a defensive specialist, did not appoint an offensive coorindator after Josh McDaniels left for Denver has caused some (i.e., us) to wonder whether the spot is being held for Weis in 2010.
Still, given the team’s performance in 2009, the Patriots should get him back in the fold as soon as possible. If a guy who spent five years not coaching football at all can help the Redskins, a guy who has been grinding at the game every day surely could assist the franchise with which he won three Super Bowls.
