Brees strengthens grip on MVP

After Brett Favre chalked up a second straight stellar performance for a 10-1 team that swept a trio of home games with a combined score of 98-29, we considered for the first time this year that the 40-year-old Ponce De Lorenzo deserves to be named the league’s MVP.

Then came Monday night.

With a perfect passer rating, including five touchdown passes, not against the Lions, Seahawks, or Bears but against the New England Patriots, Drew Brees made his best case for the award in a 38-17 victory.

Depending on the last five weeks, our opinion could change.  And we hope that the 50 Associated Press voters (including the guy who picked Keith Rivers for 2008 defensive rookie of the year) will wait until the regular season ends before making up their minds.

In the end, it could be appropriate to have co-MVPs, like 2003 (Peyton Manning and Steve McNair) and 1997 (Favre and Barry Sanders).  Or maybe a three-way tie:  Favre, Brees, and Manning.

Here’s how we currently rank the leading candidates, in a feature that we might roll out on on a weekly basis until the season ends.  If we remember.

1.  Drew Brees:  11-0, perfect passer rating against the Patriots, and an ability to get the most out of everyone around him.

2.  Brett Favre:  We still think his helmet needs to be inspected for some type of alien technology that makes whoever wears the thing 15 years younger.

3.  Peyton Manning:  The quiet constant in the eye of a storm of change.  16-0 is a real possibility, and Manning still has a chance at breaking Dan Marino’s single-season passing yardage record.

4.  Chris Johnson:  The best running back in the NFL, thanks to a knack for breaking long runs and no knack for putting the ball on the ground.  Last year, one of the voters picked Johnson; none cast ballots for Brees.

5.  Vince Young:  He’s 5-0.  If he finishes 10-0, he deserves a few votes, even if they come at Chris Johnson’s expense.

Florio – don’t you mean Ponce de Leon – the one who drank from the fountain of youth? I guess this will inadvertently become Favre’s new nickname like the “Shit him out” catchphrase you just coined.
As they would say on MNF countdown – “C’mon Man!”

  4. Pack83 says: Dec 1, 2009 7:53 AM

Aaron Rodgers should be in the top 5. Dude has gotten destroyed all season but has still put up insane numbers, that no one really notices because of Burt. He has 3136 Yards, 22/5, and a 104.5 rating. Maybe when the Vikings’ schedule evens out a little more down the stretch, and Brent throws a few more picks, people will start noticing just how good a season he’s having. Packers would have 1 or 2 wins without him.

  5. TheDPR says: Dec 1, 2009 7:59 AM

I’d have to put Favre and Brees even.
Manning a distant second. Then Johnson a distant third.

Look man…..I was flat out wrong, I predicted the Pats last night and I will eat crow. The Saints are for real, they destroyed the team the Colts squeaked by and they deserve to the credit their getting today. Has Manning ever had a perfect rating against Belichek? Granted this is a different defense then the past but awesome job. Drew Brees……MVP….I can’t argue with it. After last night he surpassed Manning and Farve in my opinion. Manning does more for his team, and Farve is the difference for the Vikings, but friggin Drew Brees flat out trumped them last night with that performance. At this point Brees is on top, Farve then Manning. Farve just needs to hope Brees loses a game, and keep winning. Manning needs to start having complete games again and keep going undefeated.

  14. IanWhetstone says: Dec 1, 2009 8:53 AM

“take Manning away from the Colts and do they even win ONE game”
I see that the Golden Boy hyperbole is still in full effect. Good thing, or else Brees might actually be rightly running away with this one. Someone needs to tell all of those Pro Bowlers in Indy who I’m constantly told are at or among the very best at their positions that Peyton is the only player in town, and they’d all be garbage if not for basking in his magnificence.
Oh, and Mr. Florio, there are a hundred guys who merit MVP consideration before Vince Young. If the difference between winning and losing when playing or not playing is your big criterion, then maybe Troy Polamalu should be your MVP. Which would also be goofy.

  15. PervyHarvin says: Dec 1, 2009 9:02 AM

All three- Favre ,Brees and Manning are deserving really. Anyone who says Brees hands down is an NFL tard. The only thing that stands out as truely amazing is that one guy is doing what has never been done before. Throwing accurate lasers at the age of 40 and only 3 picks. That is nuts really.Favre is a freak of nature, ask the guys that play the game. They say the same.

  19. Burnum says: Dec 1, 2009 9:13 AM

Should come down to Brees or Manning. Both are much more valuable for their respective teams than Favre is for the Vikes.
Favre took the Vikings from being a good team to being a Superbowl contender. Take him away and they’re still a good team. Having Adrian Peterson at RB makes things easier for any QB. Take away Brees or Manning and the Saints/Colts are just an average team in the league.

Breesd is the one with the best receiving corps.
That’s pretty much the only diofference. His offensive line and receiving corps are ghead and shoulders better than what Favre or Manning have to work with.
Bernard Berrian isn’t a number one receiver.
Harvin is a rookie. Rice is having a break-out year but it’s more about Favre’s ability to get him the ball than anything else. T-Joke couldn’t do that.
Manning lost Marvin Harrison, Tony Dungy, Tom Moore, etc. He has no running game.

How the hell does this article somehow revert to all the frigging Packer related posts? There isn’t a single Packer worthy of overall MVP consideration, but mention Favre, and the cheesers come out of the woodwork. Why don’t you either comment on articles about other teams/players without diverting attention to the Pack, or simply wait for the once a week PFT post on your average team before making comments?

  29. SmackMyVickUp says: Dec 1, 2009 9:55 AM

As far as MVP goes, MVP Qb’s don’t get sacked 44 times in 11 games, and they don’t self destruct against the 0-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now run along.

  32. MNWriter says: Dec 1, 2009 10:01 AM

    Saintnation,
I wouldn’t be that surprised. Any NFL team can beat any other team – that’s why only one team has ever gone 0-16. The Saints came within one weird play of losing to the RAMS. The Vikings had trouble against the 49ers (though SF is better than StL). Stranger things have happened than a desperately bad team summoning the effort and a little luck to beat a vastly superior team (and frankly, whether all you Saints fans know it or not, the Saints might be better off without the “undefeated” thing hanging over them into January – ask the ’07 Patriots).

  33. golongboyee says: Dec 1, 2009 10:03 AM

  35. beretta96 says: Dec 1, 2009 10:23 AM

I’d say Favre, Brees then Manning. Brees did very well last night but this isn’t a surprise, he regularily puts up 30+ points. Gregg Williams did a spectacular job shutting down Brady. McKenzie and Sharper aren’t spring chickens and they played very well and confused the shit out of Brady and company. Not the game I expected at all!
Favre is 40 years old man, c’mon he’s still throwing bullets out there and his lowest int. record probably of his career?
Manning is still Manning, nothing has changed there so why the extra cudos? Because he’s the NFL golden boy?

  36. Pack83 says: Dec 1, 2009 10:42 AM

Is he as successful as the other two QB’s in that sentence? No.

Brees is your MVP to this point, Manning could match him step for step record wise. Either could fall to Favre’s level. We’ll see by week 16.

Right now it’s clearly Favre and Brees at the top of the list with Manning an inch behind. Still wide open. And Chris Johnson could even sneak in there if he goes for 2,000 rushing yards but even then the Titans would have to make the playoffs and the top 3 QBs would really have to tail off. Vince Young? Interesting suggestion, but not going to happen. I agree that Aaron Rodgers deserves to be among the top 5.
    So it’s:
    1. Brees
    2. Favre
    3. Manning
    4. Chris Johnson
    5. Rodgers

Vince Young should not be in this conversation at all. If Chris Johnson is not playing for the Titans they would still be looking for their first win of the season regardless of their starting QB.

Typical moron. You can’t argue that Manning and Brees have better records than Favre, so you attack the Patriots.
More than just a win is figured in? Let’s see, it’s the player who is most valuable to their team, right? My guess is that the guy who has the most wins is the guy who is most valuable to that team.
If Favre has ten wins, he’s valuable to the Vikes. If Brees has eleven, he’s more valuable to the Saints. Easy enough for you, Vikes fan? Right now, Tom Brady is the single most valuable player on the Patriots. That said, Peyton Manning is the most valuable player on the Colts. One has seven wins, the other eleven. You tell me who is the more valuable to their team.

As a Vikings fan I am pretty tempted to want to say Favre is MVP. But when it comes down to it, you remove Favre from the Vikings and they can still likely win the division as they did last year, they just would be winning games by an average of 4 not 16 and it wouldn’t be so pretty. You remove Brees from the Saints and…yeah not so much. Same with Manning. Brett is putting up just as good of numbers and playing at just as high of a level. He’s every bit as good. But I just think if you look at it from a perspective of where would their team be without him the Colts and Saints need their guy even more.
The Saints run a wide open attack offense that would not work whatsoever without a great and clever QB. People talk about how great their coaching and schemes are but to be honest 90% of QB’s in the league couldn’t run it. I don’t think Favre or Manning could run that offense with that intensity and attitude. Or Brady for that matter. Not saying those guys aren’t as good but Brees is different from them and Peyton has a scheme that fits his strengths perfectly.
When it comes down to it the Saints have a bunch of very athletic big bodies that run around and get position on guys more than they do seperation but with Brees’s accuracy all you need is a big body and position because he is so dang accurate it is unbelievable sometimes. Other teams like seperation to get some room for error on the throw but I rarely see Brees’s WR’s have to do much adjustment to the pass. They just get to the spot, turn around, and catch the ball. Crazy.

  50. golongboyee says: Dec 1, 2009 12:10 PM

I believe Carson Palmer deserves some mention……don’t think he should win but he should be mentioned in the top 5.

  51. kizarsoze says: Dec 1, 2009 12:21 PM

Brees has been awesome, but that defense has one games for them and the main reason is Sharper. He’s got 3 Tds and almost 400 yards on 8 Ints, that’s insane. I know the league MVP doesn’t ever go to Defensive players…but it should. Sharper is just as much a leader as Brees and probably more of the reason they are 11-0.

  52. Meat Tuperello says: Dec 1, 2009 12:29 PM

While Brees has been outstanding, and Favre has played better than he ever has, the MVP of the NFL is Peyton Manning. Without him the Colts might have two wins at this point.
The Saints with Brunell are still a likely playoff team. Sage or T-Jackson would easily guide the Vikings to the playoffs.
Without Manning the Colts would suck!

  53. Mr. Burgess says: Dec 1, 2009 12:49 PM

While I respect Peyton for being the “leader” of the Colts, and for getting the wins back, the fact is he’s throwing like 2 picks per game this past month which is not very “MVP-like”.
As for Favre vs. Brees stats, consider that in Weeks 1-2.5, Brett didn’t even know his team that well against the Lions and Browns, where he scored like 1TD in those two games. Figure he has 24TDS to 3 INTs now, if he replayed those games, he’d probably have at least 3 more.

  58. VoxVagina says: Dec 1, 2009 4:19 PM

You’re nuts. The Titans are not yet at .500. There shouldn’t be a player on your list from the Titans. IF they finish 10-6, which is highly unlikely, then Chris Johnson MAYBE would be an MVP candidate. Vince Young has done nothing compared to Brees, Manning, and Favre. He can’t possibly be considered for MVP. But you can’t be the MVP of a failing team. I am still doubting them and will be until I actually see the Titans run the table.

I’ve looked at the strength of schedule numbers and they’re pretty poor for both teams. The Vikings’ opponents winning percentage through week 12 is a paltry .372. The Saints’ opponents winning percentage rings in at .397. What’s the difference? A grand total of 3 wins.
Having said that, I think Brees, Favre and Manning are all good choices for MVP at this point in the season. I also think Rodgers, Woodson, Chris Johnson and others deserve to be in the discussion. But I’m not holding out hope for Woodson. I think 1986 (Lawrence Taylor) was the last time a defensive player won MVP.

    Manning 0 int games: 3
    68/105 64.8% 885 5td 0int.
    Manning 1 int games: 5
    153/208 73.6% 1660 11td 5int
    Manning 2 int games: 3
    77/110 70% 8td 6int
Considering 4 of the 6 int’s in the 2 int games were either Miscommunication or a hit arm/tipped pass, it’s not like he’s making horrible reads or decisions. He’s forced a ball or two, but what qb hasn’t, especially when you are down.
It’s kinda sad when his “bad games” have him completing 70% of his passes, and nearly averaging 3 td’s a game.
Without him this season the Colts are 3-8 at this point at best, and those three might be too much of an aspiration.
Vince Young as a candidate is a joke at this point. Almost as funny as his wonderlic score.

haha, Rodgers getting blamed for the Bucs loss…laughable.
    ______________
Yeah, what’s laughable are his 6 sacks and 3 picks in that game. The rest of the team played OK, which would have been enough to beat the Bucs, but Rodgers stunk the joint up. Yes, he gets the blame, especially with that pick at the end when down 3. You would still be bitching about it if it was Favre who had done that.

  63. bian8 says: Dec 1, 2009 9:11 PM

golongboyee the Colts also beat your beloved Brady, and a win is a win even if it is by one point. Your arguments are wack. You even said:
the Colts too “escaped” the 49ers, the Ravens and the Texans twice. All the others teams they have player are crap.
so does that make you Patriots “crap”?

Rodgers had the Packers up by 10 at one point before the defense crumbled and blew that lead up. Rodgers deserves some blame but not all of it. Let’s not forget that Rodgers was not sacked at all in the 1st half.
And did you even watch the game? because based on what you said, it seems like you didn’t.

    Caveman say Brees MVP!
He would be great at rockball!
Caveman wonder if Peyton Manning is space alien?
Maybe caveman just jealous because Peyton have bigger forehead.

Did you watch the game? The defense didn’t break down. Check the game log. Tampa scored 5 TDs in that game.
2 TDs came when the defense wasn’t even on the field: a blocked punt and an interception return.
One TD came on an 8 yard drive – you can’t blame the defense for that one.
One TD came on a 17 yard drive – it’s hard to blame the defense for that one, too.
And one TD came on a 72 yard drive. You can blame the defense that.
But to continually allow the opponent to score when the defense is off the field, or to leave the defense in a hole… You can’t say the defense crumbled in that game. They held Tampa to one TD drive greater than 20 yards. And they held them to 279 total yards. Less than 100 yards rushing and less than 200 yards passing.
What more can you expect when they’re continually coming onto the field backed up to their own end zone?
Rodgers played terribly. The O-line was horrible, Freeman was better than they expected and special teams were downright bad. But the defense played very well, in spite of the score. They forced 5 three-and-outs and 7 punts overall. The defense played well enough to win. Offense and special teams laid an egg.

    bian……no moron, a win is NOT a win…….sorry
and you are right, i forgot the Pats win, which was the biggest XMas gift the Colts have gotten all season……they deserve to be about 6-5 at best at this point.
Manning is warming-up nicely for his typical playoff one-and-done chokefest!!!!!

  69. golongboyee says: Dec 2, 2009 12:38 PM

    Meat,
This is the most ridiculous statement I have heard in years
“Considering 4 of the 6 int’s in the 2 int games were either Miscommunication or a hit arm/tipped pass, it’s not like he’s making horrible reads or decisions. He’s forced a ball or two, but what qb hasn’t, especially when you are down.”
Not sure what games you were watching. But, quit making excuses. Oh , I forgot, Everything bad that happens is not the fault of Manning, everything good is 100% Manning. Give it a break……LOL

    1) Brees
    2) Favre
    3) Manning
Personally Brady is over-hyped and over-rated. I think he’s just too much of a pretty boy. Okay, I know he has the rings, but Vinatieri was the reason for 2 of the 3 rings.

  71. hayward giablommi says: Dec 2, 2009 1:34 PM

    @ Aunt Robin
Let’s see: Super Bowl 36, Patriots playing the heavily favored Rams, less than two minutes to play, no timeouts. John Madden says just take a knee, play for overtime.
Tom Brady orchistrates one of the more memorable drives in Super Bowl history to get Vinatieri in position for said field goal…but we should believe you, who believes Brady had nothing to do with it, just an overrated pretty boy who isn’t worthy of the hype. Ha!!
Really, some of you people here are just either so blinded by your own anti- Patriots/Brady/Belichick agenda, or just so unknowledgable, that it is frightening. Just incredible ignorance you display here.

  72. golongboyee says: Dec 2, 2009 6:32 PM

Aunt Robin is a moron……….anyone that thinks Brady is over-rated but sings the praises of the “choke-artist” Manning is simply dillusional!
