scrapdope — Celek is on pace to make the probowl in his second year at tight end. His deal is quite reasonable in comparison to Gates, Gonzo, Witten, Cooley — all who Celek is either performing as well if not better than this year. And other than Owen Daniels and Vernon Davis, he is the best young tight end in the league. Celek will probably outperform this deal in two years.
And what are you complaining about — his height and his weight — not his play on the field. Your arguments makes no sense. And you don’t understand the range of money given to a starting tight end in the nfl — its no where near 2 million a year.

c’mon Man. Celek is not that great. For 30 million bucks and 11 guaranteed I would think we signed a young Tony Gonzalez. Celek is a bit undersized. Needs to hit the weights and put about 10 lbs on. He could also grow a few inches as well. I definitely do not like this. Way overpaid for a guy who deserves about 2 million a season.

By the way, the league also has a salary floor, so as a practical matter, there is no such word as cheap in the NFL. Significant money has to be spent one way or the other.

I can’t envision Celek complaining about money in the future. He’s not that kind of guy. I think the Eagles are trying to lock up all their young guys now so that they don’t have problems re-signing guys looking for big money in free agency once there’s no salary cap. Good move. The Eagles are good at keeping players for the prime of their careers, but they need to open up the wallet for some better free agents, especially to upgrade the defense

The probably won’t extend Sheldon Brown, as he’s getting up in age, but they should at least adjust the remainder of his contract, so he’s rewarded for his good play and leadership.

First of all, there is a difference between they’re, there, and their, please learn it.
Secondly, the Eagles are second in the entire league (Washington) in actual money spent over the last ten years. So for you to talk about them being cheap just goes to show how ignorant you are in this matter.
Lastly, how do you figure that they are “settling for players that are cheap” when they go get Asante, T.O., and almost had Randy Moss leveraged away from the Pats? The Eagles haven’t won a Superbowl, but it isn’t because they are cheap.

Good move by the Eagles. May not be a good move by Celek if he continues to play the way he has. He may want to rethink his contract a few years from now when he’s among the top three pass catching tight ends and he’s not getting paid like it.
Celek has been a tremendous asset for the Eagles. The average life span of a player is only a few years, so good for him.

shockandawe09NYG, you’re wrong on both points.
1) They now have about 2 to 3 million left in available money. So they’ve essentially spent it all this year.
2). If you knew anything about the various teams and their salary caps, you’d know the Eagles rolled over money last year so they essentially had 20 million over the set cap. So even if they hadn’t extended Justice and Celek, they had already spent way more than most teams.

The Eagles just like to keep there money in there pockets! There very smart but at the end of the day they have NOT WON ANYTHING and there TOP 5 IF NOT TOP 3 IN CAP SPACE!!! IF THE EAGLES WERENT SO CHEAP THEY COULD HAVE THE MOST INVINCIBLE TEAM IN THE WORLD BUT THEY DONT LIKE TO PAY UP! THEY RATHER GET PLAYERS THAT ARE GOOD FOR CHEAP AND JUST SETTLE FOR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS INSTEAD OF TAKING CHANCES AND SPEND SOME MONEY……………..

A great move made by a great organization! I really hope the extend Sheldon Brown as he has really come through in the clutch, playing with a torn hammy for an injury depleted defense.
Also with D-Jax possibly missing this week’s game, the aforementioned Reggie Brown may finally get a chance to earn his paycheck.
Celek had a bad game, but he is going to be a solid TE for several years!!

Another great move by the Eagles. And while Florio enjoys implying that two similar deals (brown and lito) did not work out when the players got angry, Sheldon is still here playing well and lito was replaced by a pro bowler asante samuel.
Furthermore, the article forgets to mention the numerous other great similar deals the Eagles have mad …i.e. Herramins, jamal jackson, m. patterson, b. bunkley, q. mikell. The only one they got burnt on was the Reggie Brown deal. Still waiting on S. Andrews – but couldn’t blame them for signing a young probowl guard.
