Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher made some critical comments over the weekend about the way the team’s offense has changed since switching quarterbacks from Kyle Orton to Jay Cutler.
Today, Cutler said he thinks Urlacher is right — although Cutler seems to think that the real culprit is the Bears’ running game, not his own problems as a passer.
“We’ve struggled running the ball. Brian’s right,” Cutler said. “You don’t have to run the ball every play, you don’t have to be a running team. But when you run the ball, you have to be effective.”
But Urlacher’s criticism went beyond just saying the Bears struggle running the ball. Urlacher criticized both the Bears’ running attack — telling Yahoo’s Michael Silver, “We don’t make anyone [expletive] miss” — and the shift at quarterback.
Cutler said he took no offense to Urlacher saying he hates the way the Bears’ identity has changed now that Orton is gone.
“He didn’t have to apologize to me,” Cutler said. “I talked to him, I understand what he’s talking about. It’s frustrating for everybody in that locker room. . . . I know Brian’s frustrated, I’m frustrated, but there’s not much we can do.”
Actually, there is something the Bears can do: They can start winning some games. Until the Bears are winning with Cutler under center, Cutler had better get used to the criticism.
“There’s not much we can do”
What a pansy this guy is
AWESOME. What a snivelling little worm.
Urlacher’s also right about you being a pussy, Cutler.
I cannot believe I was actually nervous for the Vikings when the Bears signed him. It’s nice to know what happened to all of Favre’s INT’s. Cutler has ‘em.
It seems to start with that offensive line. Until they fix the line issues, the running game is going to continue to suffer… and Cutler is going to continue to not have time to figure out which color of jersey to throw to.
Urlacher on Cutler: “He’s a stupid PUSSY.”
“I’m frustrated, but there’s not much we can do.”
Um..stop throwing interceptions idiot.
Have to give it to Cutler for once. At least he admits the problems and isn’t in denial. Please figure out something quick before the Vikings come to Soldier Field. I’m tired of watching T Jack play 1/4 of the game.More fun when Favre’s throwing.
Why not get some REAL receivers to throw to instead of an overrated ex specials teams/defensive back and others suited to be 4th wr on most teams?
Good ole’ Cuntler. Doing what he does best, blaiming everyone else. Although Forte does suck!!!
agreed with Tomb. Was also a little concerned with the vikes chances at a repeat with cuntler, kinda figured they finally had the last piece and would dominate for a couple years. now you see an old, ineffective defense, absolutely no WR’s a RB that is so overrated its not even funny, the lack of an offensive line, and QB that benifited from always being in passing siuations, and having great talent catching the ball, and from playing against much weaker DB’s in the AFC west minus nmamdi (not a clue on spellig) asomuguoh.
this move could set the bears back a good 5 years from really contending at a minimum, and thats assuming they trade any and all talent on defense for draft picks to build a high flying offense while hoping to piecemeal a defense like the saints or 99 rams. cuntler has the arm, just not the accuracy or recievers he needs. 2 years from now it could be the lions and vikes fighting for the division with the pack and bears fighting for the cellar.
@GovtMinion – Last year in Denver Cutler was behind one of the top 3 O-lines in the NFL. He was only sacked 12 times all year, and he was still 2nd to Favre in INT’s!
Cutler, welcome to the media making a big deal out of nothing.
The Bears have always handled things in-house. The national media are the ones who have their heads so far up Bret Favre’s *ss that they don’t see any other team in the NFC North other his current and former team.
It amazes me how much the national media get everything wrong about the Bears in the commentary. Every nationally televised game the only thing they talk about is Cutler coming from Denver and how he left. Everybody else is secondary or even last.
Typical Cutler. How about “I take responsibility…”
Looks like the Broncos won this trade. Two first round picks, a third round pick, and a QB with more toughness and leadership than Cutler has ever had. Plus, the Broncos are 6-4 and have a shot at the playoffs. Yeah, I’d say McDaniels got the better of Chicago on that one.
“Actually, there is something the Bears can do: They can start winning some games. ”
is it really that simple? just decide to win games and that will fix everything?
you only have to look at what happened to one of the best young qb’s once he came to the bears to know that he alone is not the problem.you and florio would have something negative to say about him even if he was doing well. hard for any qb to do well when he is running for his life after he gets the snap.until they get someone who knows that offense is part of the game and has more than 3 plays in the playbook they will continue to suck and not just because of jay.as for the defense of course they miss urlacher but they have been on the decline since the superbowl after lovie got rid of riveria. teams have figured out out his scheme and he is to stubborn to make any changes.3 years without the playoffs is long enough!time to move on and go in a different direction.
Cowher to the Bears
Unless they get a offensive line that can block worth a shit it won’t matter who the hell is throwing the ball.
See Brady in the Saints game.
Get off the guys back the coaching is not helping at all either. Turner belongs in pop warner coaching.
I am so sick of hearing about the Broncos fans this and that. Fine you think you got the better end of the deal now shut the f up.
“There’s not much we can do.” Interesting interpretation. Okay, I’ll give him credit for not throwing a tantrum and demanding to be traded to another team this time around. But he’s not exactly owning up to his role in Chicago’s losses either. One thing he could do is work on his throwing accuracy–consistently overthrowing receivers is a QB problem and the QB is the one who has to fix it.
Worldchampionbears09:
The media isn’t throwing picks, getting hurt on D, watching both offensive and defensive lines diminsh, giving away high draft picks, or looking non-chalant after a mistake. Your boy Jay Cutler has to step it up, the Bears organization as a whole has to step it up. Chicago is not a very forgiving city. These guys are in the media and have a target on their back, get over it. Keep coddling Jay and see how that works out for you. He was supposed to be the second coming…now everyone is second guessing.
Bear’s Offensive Line = Worst in NFL
Fixing that, fixes offense.
The Bears O-line is awful, they are equally bad at run and pass blocking. The only comparison to this season and last season is that Cutler is always playing from behind.
The biggest problem with this franchise is Angelo. The team finally got a great young runner and they didn’t help the offensive line, only adding way past his prime Orlando Pace. They go out and get Cutler, but their top receivers are Hester, Knox, and Olsen. No matter how you spin it, that’s one of the worst receiving trios in the league. More weapons and more linemen are necessary, but the draft hasn’t been terribly successful. Eh Chris Williams?
Wow…why does this team struggle? Because the quarterback says there is not much he can do.
“We’re ok. Give me the rock. I’ll go back to work.”
Said right before his 5th interception of the game.
Cocky dork!
And you wonder why Charger fans were so right about Cutler? I think Bears fans were too worried about cleaning up their jizz rags after watching the Cutler highlights on youtube to stop and listen to teams that have a nearly non-biased opinion of him as a QB. It’s like god gave a monkey Brett Favre’s arm. Cutler has SOME games that keep fans wanting more and others that is apparent that Jay Cutler shouldn’t even be in the UFL, let alone the NFL. The guy has NEVER CAME BACK FROM A 10 POINT DEFICIT! IN 4 YEARS!!!! That’s just sad. Go up by a td and fg and the game is pretty much over. He thinks the offense is on his shoulders and his shoulders alone. He is probably the worst in the league, including Jamarcus Russell, at recognizing a disguised coverage. Just an awful awful QB for the long term.
Stupid move Bears.
All you idiots need to realize the poor bastards number one receiver is a return specialist that wouldn’t even start on 80% of all NFL teams….. Get him some real weapons and he’ll be just fine.
How about getting rid of Lovie who couldn’t win with either QB? And Urlacher should talk, he hasn’t done squat in the last 2 years, even before he got hurt this year his vagina was stinking up the place.
How are they going to fix the O-line without any draft picks?
I guess they could trade some bums. But they need a bonafide #1 receiver too.
Way to go knucklehead Angelo.
Stuart Scotts left your a moron
Hey DaBears1…….. DENVER GOT THE BETTER END OF THE DEAL LOL!!!!!!!
I don’t know why everyone is so worried about Cutler and the Bears? Chicago is a tough guy town. Tough guys can handle it if there teams sucks for a season or two. The Bears will be dominant once again.
Life gives us all opportunities to rise up and be a man…Cutler always whiffs. It’s starting to look like the Jeff George comparisons are brutally unfair to Jeff George.
not much we can do? wtf?? lol
when cutler was the qb of denver he was quoted as saying
“as long as i’m not winning games, there’s always going to be a question mark”
oh how right you were
dude needs to mature, and get smarter
The Bears biggest issue is their O-line. Look at Denver, when Cutler was there had had all day to throw and he threw up great numbers. This season, Orton has had all day to throw and has had a great season. In Chicago Cutler doesn’t have that, he had to either throw it immediately or run for his life…it all starts up front, the bears need to build their O-line and then we can see their running game more functional and we’ll see Cutler tearing apart opposing defenses like he is able to do.
They Ran Forte into the ground last year… and if you look at a lot of the early Int’s… the receiver stopped running the route– or changed… Jay is careless but Hester is not a #1, he’s a fast return guy, ….They invested in cutler.. they need to reunite him with Shanahan… Bears simply cant play the style of hard hitting football their fans call for…
Beardoggs-
The EXACT same response was said from Bronco fans last year. You might try to resort to name calling but I’m right. He’s WAY too reckless and will have the same fate as Wrecks Grossman. He’s more physically gifted than Wrecks but far more reckless.
I’ve seen the guy play from day 1 and he’s been exposed a LONG LONG time ago. He has one decent, and I mean decent, year and all of a sudden he’s the best QB the Bears have ever had?
I actually feel for Bears fans. Lovie was forced to buy into the hype to keep his job. If he didn’t do something then he was gone. He’s fallen out of favor and was grasping at straws. He seen a overblown overhyped QB on the block and went shopping.
I could really understand the excitment because ESPN was really hyping this guy up big time to save face from his draft grade and you got excited. But the fact is his CAREER stats are he makes good teams bad and bad teams worst. He took over a Bronco team that was competitive for nearly 10 strait years, including a division title just a year before Cutler took over. When Cutler took the reign he made the Broncos a doormat of the AFCW who’s best year brought a 8-8 record. Cutler leaves and they’re playoff bound again. Cutler is a risk taker and leaves the defense hanging out to dry because he’s too inconsistent to sustain drives and let his defense rest.
F U florio. Cutler absolutely did take responsibility, you just cut that quote out, “…I’m aware of that and a lot of it should come my way.”
Full quote:
“You can’t take anything personal in this game, especially whenever we’re losing,” Cutler said. “I’m going to get a lot of blame and I’m aware of that and a lot of it should come my way. I’m understanding with that. I know Brian’s frustrated. I’m frustrated. There’s not much we can do.
I am a Bronco fan, and I think the trade deal will end up being a wash over the years.
Chicago got a bright young talent in the trade and will eventually appreciate what he brings. He does throw Ints, but he has enormous skills as well. Good coaching, a steady O-line and a productive running game all will help him develop.
Meanwhile, I’m slowly getting on the Orton bandwagon. The guy’s a whole lot tougher than I thought, and he brings his own brand of talent to a game as well.
In the end both teams will benefit.
Funny, Broncos are not ridiculously talking s**t to Bears fans nor did they pronounce themselves Super Bowl Champs after a 6-0 start. I wont name who, but take note other nfc north team!
Cutler made the mistake in Denver of comparing himself favorably to Elway. He played on teams in Denver that had far more talent than three teams Elway put on his back and dragged to Super Bowls.
But with more talent, Cutler hasn’t won. Now in Chicago, he still has more offensive talent than three Broncos teams Elway took to the Super Bowl. (And those who doubt this are either too young to know better or simply ignorant.) I won’t even mention the defensive juggernaut some of those Denver teams were. Jim Ryan, anyone? Tony Lilly?
But he’s failing. Sorry, Jay. Elway you ain’t. Your arm isn’t stronger – never was – and you don’t have the grit.
A lot of Chicago fans are bellowing for Shanahan, as though he’ll cure the ills. Shanahan never won a thing as a coordinator or head coach without a Hall of Fame-caliber QB and a roster already stocked with Pro Bowlers.
Shanahan never drafted one of those great QBs, he always inherited one. Montana, Young, Elway.
Left to his own devices, Shanny whiffed on Grbac (reportedly his call to draft in SF), Griese, Lewis, etc.
And if you think you have ineffective flyweights on the O and D lines now, Chicago, bring Shanny onboard.
Forte had 8 carries against Minnesota.
8.
Yeah right. There’s also many coaches who’ve had MORE talent than Shanahan did that didn’t even make it to the Super Bowl.
(Initials would be SAN DIEGO).
Shanahan is a great offensive mind who stayed in one place too long. The lame crap about inheriting talent is a load of glop. He made the most of what talent he had, including DRAFTING Terrell Davis in the 6TH ROUND! Elway was old and at the end of his career when they won two BACK to BACK Super Bowls.
Don’t tell us it wasn’t coaching.
Shanny would be a great fit in Chi-town. He couldn’t hear your bitching with those two Super Bowl rings stuck in his ears.
Hey azwildcats96
Why don’t you man up like we have and quit jerking off in your moms underwear in your closet. If you think neckbeard is better than cutler you are a classic fantasy football dumb ass. Go suck ur dads balls some more.
PervyHarvin says:
Have to give it to Cutler for once. At least he admits the problems and isn’t in denial.
You think???
He’s thrown more INT’s than 10 other QBs combined, but doesn’t mention THAT little problem. And you think he’s not in denial? I pray to God that all Vikes fans aren’t as stupid as you seem to be.
“The Bears will be dominant once again.”
My grandkids will be happy to hear that. They’re not alive yet, my daughter is twelve.
“Elway was old and at the end of his career when they won two BACK to BACK Super Bowls.
Don’t tell us it wasn’t coaching.”
You can’t be serious??? Elway was far from washed up in his final seasons. Far from washed up. Coaching won those SB’s? Buddy, on that field, Elway WAS the freaking coach!
On Elways worst day, Jay Cutler couldn’t have carried his Gatorade.
Most f-ed up thing you’ve ever written. Seriously.
“He didn’t have to apologize to me,” Cutler said. “I talked to him, I understand what he’s talking about. It’s frustrating for everybody in that locker room. . . . I know Brian’s frustrated, I’m frustrated, but there’s not much we can do.”
Cutler: I’ll put a call in to Mike Shanahan!
Are you serious? In his 14th season on bad knees and a repaired shoulder Elway was in his prime?
I watched Elway live for 14 seasons and saw a fierce competitor who desperately wanted to win the big one once before it was over. He finally did on his fourth and fifth tries, but it was far from all Elway in those two wins. You diminish and belittle every other player when you say glop like that.
Elway didn’t start out with a Hall of Fame performance either. He certainly struggled with a weak line and no running game as well. He was told he couldn’t carry Bradshaw’s jock too, but in the end we know they were both very good.
Like Elway, Cuttler will someday hold his own as well. Will he be HOF material? Who knows. But he won’t be a Bust either. Seriously………
And I’ve actually written a lot more F-ed up stuff than that before.
“And I’ve actually written a lot more F-ed up stuff than that before.”
A tip of the hat for that, Mr.Beauregard (lol)
FWIW, I didn’t say Elway was in his prime, just that he was far from washed up.
Seaman -
He was supposed to be the second coming…now everyone is second guessing.
Great line!
